Use CBR, choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and set keyframes every 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Then configure MediaMTX to forward the stream to the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
Who controls bitrate and keyframes?
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy: it routes streams between protocols and can forward a stream to another server. In a normal MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding setup, the upstream encoder determines the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Configure those options in the encoder or device producing the stream, then use MediaMTX to forward its output.
MediaMTX’s configuration reference includes camera-specific options such as rpiCameraBitrate and rpiCameraIDRPeriod. Those apply to its Raspberry Pi camera source; they are not general bitrate or keyframe controls for every forwarded stream. The current reference identifies itself as MediaMTX v1.21.1: MediaMTX configuration reference.
YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and a 2-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Choose bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate
The values below are YouTube’s recommended bitrate targets in Mbps. Match the row to your actual output resolution and frame rate, then use the column for the video codec sent to YouTube.
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are recommended targets, not a single bitrate that suits every stream. YouTube also lists lower minimums: for example, at 1080p60 the minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p30 it is 4 Mbps and 5 Mbps, respectively. A minimum is not the recommended target. The figures come from YouTube’s current guidance, which does not state a publication year.

Use the recommended target only if your encoder and stable upstream connection can sustain it. If they cannot, lower the output resolution or frame rate, or select a lower supported bitrate and test the result. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably support, running a speed test, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health.
Keyframe interval and audio
Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed 4 seconds. The option may be labeled “keyframe interval,” “keyframe frequency,” or “GOP,” depending on the encoder; use seconds or the equivalent frame count for the output frame rate. For example, a 2-second interval corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.

This is the documented configuration pattern, not a promise that the example endpoint text will always be current. MediaMTX says to check the URL YouTube reports because it reflects the URL available when the documentation was updated. Get the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, replace the example values, and keep the key secret. Use rtmps:// for encryption in transit. Refer to MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guide.
If OBS publishes to MediaMTX, that is a separate, upstream connection from MediaMTX’s downstream forward to YouTube. MediaMTX documents OBS publishing over RTMP or WebRTC and recommends RTMP. It also documents RTMPS for that leg when TLS is configured: MediaMTX’s OBS publishing guide.

Setup and preflight checklist
- Identify the encoder output. Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate that will reach YouTube; those determine which bitrate row applies.
- Set the encoder. Choose CBR and the matching YouTube bitrate target. Set a 2-second keyframe interval, and keep it at or below 4 seconds.
- Check both media tracks. Include video and audio, using AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Set the MediaMTX forward destination. Add the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room to the relevant path’s
forwardlist. - Run a controlled test. Use representative movement and audio, then review YouTube’s stream health and messages before the event. YouTube Help advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
Troubleshoot a stream YouTube will not accept
- Check the ingest URL and key. Confirm both are current in YouTube Live Control Room and that the key has not been mistyped or exposed.
- Confirm audio and video are both present. A video-only stream can be silently rejected.
- Check protocol and codec. Confirm the stream uses a supported RTMP/RTMPS setup and a listed video codec; use RTMPS when following YouTube’s encrypted-ingest guidance.
- Verify encoder rate control and bitrate. Use CBR and compare the bitrate with the correct codec, resolution, and frame-rate row. If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce resolution or frame rate, or test a lower supported bitrate.
- Verify keyframe interval. Set it to 2 seconds and ensure it is no more than 4 seconds.
- Review YouTube stream health during a test. Test with representative audio and movement and use the messages in Live Control Room to narrow down the problem.
