Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To secure publishing, make the Nginx RTMP server validate each stream key before accepting a publish connection. In the community nginx-rtmp-module, an on_publish callback can ask an authorization service to approve or reject a publish request; the callback does not itself create a key store or validate keys. Use unique, hard-to-guess keys, reject revoked credentials, and add source-IP restrictions only where publisher addresses are stable.
What a stream key does—and does not—protect
A stream key is a publishing credential. It should be checked by server-side authorization logic rather than treated as secure merely because it is difficult to guess or appears in an obscure stream name. The community module’s on_publish callback sends a publish request to an HTTP application; the callback response status determines whether publishing is allowed.
Publishing and viewing are separate permissions. A publish key should not be assumed to protect playback. The module provides publish/play access rules and callbacks, so configure the appropriate controls for each audience and action.
Identify the Nginx RTMP module you are running
Before changing configuration, establish the Nginx distribution, RTMP module or fork, version, and how it was installed. The instructions for NGINX Plus and the community module are not interchangeable.

Do not copy a directive into a configuration context without checking that your installed module supports it there.
Validate each publishing key with on_publish
Configure the callback for the RTMP application
In the RTMP application that accepts uploads, configure on_publish to point to an authorization endpoint you operate. The exact directive context and endpoint configuration must match your module build; use its documentation rather than assuming every fork accepts identical syntax.

Make the authorization service enforce policy
The endpoint should extract the credential from the publish request, look it up in server-side records, and allow only a known, active key. Return an authorization failure when the key is missing, unknown, expired under your policy, or revoked. The module uses the callback response status to decide whether to accept the publish request; the service is where key lookup and policy belong.
- Issue a unique, high-entropy key for each publisher or publishing client. Do not reuse one shared key if you need to revoke access for one person without disrupting others.
- Keep keys out of public configuration, client-visible pages, and logs where possible. Treat them as credentials, and restrict access to the systems and staff that need them.
- Provide a way to revoke and rotate keys. Test that a revoked key is rejected, not just that a valid one succeeds.
- Handle authorization-service failures deliberately. For a protected ingest, do not silently accept publishing when the service cannot make an authorization decision; test the failure behavior in your deployed module.
The module documentation describes the callback mechanism and status-based decision, but does not prescribe a key database, a generation algorithm, or a complete application. Those parts must be implemented and secured in your authorization service.

Add publisher IP rules when addresses are dependable
The community module documents allow and deny rules for publish and play access by address, subnet, or all. For a controlled network with one known publisher address, its directive reference illustrates this pattern:
allow publish 192.0.2.10;
deny publish all;
Replace the documentation address with the real publisher address, and confirm rule order and context against the deployed module. The order of rules matters.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
IP filtering is a useful additional boundary, not a substitute for stream-key validation. NAT, mobile connections, and changing ISP addresses can make a publisher’s apparent address vary; an allowlist can then block a legitimate source. Use it only when you can maintain accurate address data.
Protect playback and HTTP-delivered video separately
If viewers must be authenticated, configure play-side access rules or an appropriate on_play check. Do not assume that a valid publishing key grants or restricts playback in the way you intend.

If the server also delivers HLS or DASH over HTTP, secure the playlists and media segments on that HTTP delivery path as well. NGINX Plus documentation identifies RTMP, HLS, and DASH as supported formats, but an RTMP publish key does not automatically authenticate HTTP requests. The right HTTP authorization design depends on how your deployment serves those files; confirm the design for that architecture rather than applying a generic snippet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use address and resource controls for their proper purposes
The module’s max_message and max_streams directives can limit resource use, but they are not authentication controls. Choose values for your actual stream workload and verify the supported behavior in documentation for your exact module build. Do not copy arbitrary limits as universal security settings.
Check transport encryption instead of assuming it
Do not infer that a community RTMP listener is encrypted because Nginx supports TLS elsewhere. The Nginx stream SSL reference documents TLS capability for the separate stream module; it does not establish native TLS support for the community RTMP listener. If confidentiality in transit is required, validate a TLS termination, proxy, VPN, or tunnel design against the deployed configuration and clients.
Test and apply the configuration safely
- Back up the active configuration. Record the module or package version and identify the RTMP application that accepts publishers.
- Add the authorization callback and any address rules. Confirm that the directives are supported in their chosen contexts for this build.
- Run the package-appropriate syntax test. For the NGINX Plus procedure, the official guide documents testing with
nginx -t. Use the equivalent documented command for your installation. - Reload using the correct package procedure. The NGINX Plus guide documents a reload after testing; follow the procedure for your installed distribution and module.
- Test both sides of the access decision. In a controlled environment, verify that an active key can publish and that missing, unknown, and revoked keys are rejected. If using an IP allowlist, verify an allowed source and a disallowed one. Check playback independently if it is meant to be private.
- Review logs and recovery behavior. Confirm that denied attempts are diagnosable without unnecessarily recording secret keys, and that a failure of the authorization service does not produce an unintended access policy.
Troubleshoot common access problems
- A valid publisher is rejected: Check that the request reaches the intended RTMP application, the submitted key matches the active server-side record, the callback endpoint is reachable, and any IP rule reflects the publisher’s current source address.
- An invalid key is accepted: Confirm that the application actually uses
on_publish, that the authorization service rejects unknown credentials, and that its response status is interpreted as intended by this module build. - Publishing stops after an address-rule change: Check rule order and configuration context, then account for NAT or a changed ISP/mobile address before loosening the rule.
- Publishing works but viewers can still access video: That is a separate playback or HTTP-delivery policy. Configure play authorization and, for HLS/DASH, secure the HTTP playlists and segments independently.
- Configuration test or reload fails: Recheck syntax, directive support, module loading, and whether the instructions match NGINX Plus or the community module. Do not assume a configuration for one distribution or fork applies to another.
- You expected encrypted RTMP: Verify the actual transport and termination path. The separate Nginx stream TLS documentation is not proof that the community RTMP listener itself is encrypted.
Or let it run in the cloud
This guide is for securing a self-hosted Nginx RTMP ingest server. If your goal instead is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
