Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stream through NGINX to YouTube, configure a local RTMP application for your encoder to publish to, then forward the video to YouTube using the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Those are two separate connections: a basic NGINX RTMP listener does not, by itself, prove that the YouTube-facing relay supports the TLS, port 443, and SNI required for RTMPS.
How the NGINX-to-YouTube path works
The setup has two links:
- Publisher to NGINX: an encoder sends a stream to an NGINX RTMP server and an application configured on that server.
- NGINX or a relay to YouTube: a component capable of YouTube’s required RTMPS transport sends the stream to the current ingest address with the stream key for that broadcast.
The community nginx-rtmp-module documents RTMP applications and relay features, among other functions. Its generic RTMP push examples should not be treated as proof of secure RTMPS support. YouTube’s secure ingest requirements are documented separately in Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Choose the NGINX module that matches your installation
First identify whether the server runs NGINX Plus or NGINX Open Source. Their RTMP module distribution and compatibility are not interchangeable.
| Installation | What to check | Configuration path |
|---|---|---|
| NGINX Plus | F5’s RTMP dynamic module instructions apply to NGINX Plus and its supported packages. | Install the matching package, load ngx_rtmp_module.so in the main context, test the configuration, then reload NGINX. See F5’s RTMP dynamic module guide. |
| NGINX Open Source | Compatibility depends on the exact NGINX build, operating system, module revision, and whether the module was built statically or for dynamic loading. | Follow the official NGINX configure documentation for third-party modules, using --add-module for a static build or a compatible dynamic module where supported. |
Do not copy a module package or shared-object path from another server without checking its build and package source. The examples below describe configuration shape; they have not been validated against your particular NGINX installation.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Configure a local RTMP application
The upstream module README gives this minimal pattern for accepting a live RTMP publish:
rtmp {
server {
listen 1935;
application live {
live on;
}
}
}
Place the rtmp block in a context supported by your module build. The example’s port 1935 is a listener value, not a requirement to expose that port to the public internet. Restrict who can publish; the module documents publish allow/deny rules and HTTP callbacks as possible controls.

Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Match the encoder URL to the application name
An RTMP publish URL has the general form rtmp://host/app/name. In the example, app must match the configured application block, so the application segment is live. The final segment is the stream name interpreted by the application. Use the host and stream name appropriate to your server and encoder.
Keep publishing credentials and YouTube stream keys out of public configuration examples, screenshots, shell history, and logs. A stream key grants access to the associated broadcast ingest; treat it as a secret.

Get YouTube’s RTMPS address and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream or create a broadcast.
- Open Stream settings. Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL where required, and retrieve the associated stream key.
- Use the exact address and key shown for that stream. YouTube’s URL and key are specific to the account and stream; do not substitute a guessed endpoint or publish a real key in a shared configuration.
YouTube’s RTMPS address uses the rtmps scheme and a valid ingest server and application path. It connects on port 443 over SSL/TLS, with SNI set to the destination hostname. API clients can obtain an RTMPS address from cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress; see the YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide and the LiveBroadcasts API documentation.
Forward the stream securely
Before configuring a YouTube-facing relay, establish that the chosen relay component actually supports TLS, port 443, and SNI for the destination hostname. The community module’s documented generic push behavior does not establish those capabilities for every build or deployment. Do not insert a generic push line and assume it creates an RTMPS connection.

Use one of these implementation paths:
- RTMPS-capable relay: configure a relay verified for the deployed version to use the exact RTMPS address and key supplied by YouTube. Confirm it sends SNI for the hostname and establishes TLS to port 443.
- Separate encoder or relay: publish to the local NGINX application, then use a separate component whose documented transport supports YouTube RTMPS. Securely provide the stream key to that component.
Test the two links independently: confirm the publisher can reach the local application, then confirm the YouTube-facing component can establish the required RTMPS connection and that the broadcast appears in Live Control Room. Exact directives depend on the module and relay build; the cited documentation does not certify a particular community relay implementation.

- Check that the module file and configuration syntax match the installed NGINX build.
- Run
nginx -t. Continue only if the configuration test succeeds. - Reload NGINX using the method documented for your package or service manager.
- Start a test publish and check the local listener, relay logs, and YouTube Live Control Room for the point of failure.
Troubleshoot RTMPS connection failures
Check the YouTube-facing connection in this order:
- Endpoint scheme: use the exact
rtmps://URL from Live Control Room, not a plainrtmp://address. - Port: confirm the connection uses port 443.
- TLS: verify the relay establishes SSL/TLS rather than sending cleartext RTMP.
- SNI: verify that the TLS client sends the destination server hostname as SNI.
- Path and key: check the ingest application path and corresponding stream key against the current Live Control Room settings.
- Local transport and network: confirm the module and firewall permit the intended local publish and outbound RTMPS connection.
Certificate or SSL errors
Google’s troubleshooting guidance associates invalid-certificate errors with an incorrect endpoint or protocol, or use of the wrong port. Recheck the RTMPS URL and port 443, then verify TLS and SNI behavior in the relay. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Timeouts
A timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an RTMPS server. Confirm the relay is using the RTMPS scheme and negotiating TLS on port 443 rather than attempting a plain RTMP connection.
NGINX rejects the configuration or will not load the module
Check the NGINX error output and module path, then verify that the module was built for the installed NGINX version and distribution. A successful configuration test confirms syntax and loadability; it does not prove that the YouTube relay supports RTMPS.
Optional module features you may not need
The upstream module also documents relay via push/pull, HLS and DASH output, recording, HTTP callbacks, statistics output, and FFmpeg integrations for transcoding. These are optional; forwarding to YouTube does not automatically require local HLS, DASH, recording, a statistics endpoint, or transcoding. Its HLS example expects H.264/AAC, so confirm codec needs for the actual delivery chain before adding a transcoding step.

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos streaming on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids maintaining an NGINX host and relay: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running with your computer off. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
