For a continuous playlist sent from SRS to YouTube, choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its standard encoder workflow, which uses a server URL and stream key. Use HLS ingest only when you need its particular format or encoding path and can meet YouTube’s playlist, segment, codec, and HTTPS requirements. First, make sure you mean sending a stream to YouTube—not using SRS to generate HLS for viewers.
First distinguish YouTube ingest from SRS HLS delivery
These are different workflows. SRS can take an incoming stream and generate an HLS playlist and media segments for viewers. YouTube HLS ingest instead requires your encoder to upload its own compliant media playlist and segments to YouTube over HTTPS. An SRS-generated viewer-facing .m3u8 is not automatically a valid YouTube ingest feed. SRS HLS documentation and YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describe the separate paths.
If your goal is for YouTube to receive a continuous playlist, compare RTMPS/RTMP ingest with YouTube HLS ingest. If your goal is to serve viewers directly from SRS, YouTube’s ingest recommendation does not decide that delivery architecture.
RTMPS vs HLS ingest for a YouTube playlist
| Consideration | RTMPS/RTMP ingest | HLS ingest |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Default for a continuous encoder-to-YouTube stream when supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Use when an HLS-specific codec or quality path is needed and your encoder can meet the additional requirements. |
| Connection and setup | Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. Prefer RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. | Upload the media playlist and M2TS segments to YouTube over HTTPS, following the playlist and segment rules. |
| Latency | YouTube describes HLS ingest as usually higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingest. That is a relative comparison, not a guaranteed end-to-end delay for an individual stream. | Segment-based and usually higher latency according to YouTube. Smaller segments may reduce latency, but can increase rebuffering risk and reduce encoding efficiency. |
| Format requirements | YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. | Requires muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and a rolling media playlist. Do not send a master playlist with variants for this ingest workflow. |
| Operational tradeoff | Uses the familiar encoder workflow; monitor stream health and warnings in Live Control Room. | Requires close attention to playlist sequence, outstanding-segment count, segment duration, and HTTPS uploads. |
The latency distinction is explicit in YouTube’s HLS guide: “HLS ingestion usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestions because HLS ingestion is segment-based.”

Why RTMPS is the practical default for SRS
YouTube’s ordinary encoder setup asks for a server URL and stream key, and YouTube recommends RTMPS. That recommendation does not mean plain RTMP is impossible; use the secure option when the encoder supports it. SRS identifies RTMP as a common production and ingest protocol, making it the straightforward choice for a continuous source sent to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and SRS’s HLS documentation.
For a playlist loop, the operational goal is a steady encoder output, not simply a protocol label. Keep formats and timestamps consistent across the items, supervise the publishing process, and plan how it reconnects if the connection fails. These are operational precautions, not evidence that any particular playlist setup is guaranteed to run without interruption.

What YouTube HLS ingest requires
Choose HLS only if the encoder can produce and upload the HLS ingest format YouTube specifies. YouTube’s current HLS ingestion guide, accessed October 3, 2026, sets out these requirements and recommendations:
- Transport and playlist: Upload over HTTPS using a rolling media playlist. The ingestion workflow does not use a master playlist.
- Media format: Use muxed M2TS segments with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio. The video must use a closed GOP.
- Segment duration: YouTube recommends segments of one to four seconds; segments must not exceed five seconds.
- Outstanding segments: A media playlist may contain no more than five outstanding segments.
- Frame rate: YouTube HLS ingest supports up to 60 fps.
These are ingest constraints, not settings to copy from SRS’s separate HLS delivery configuration. SRS’s documentation gives an HLS example using two-second fragments and a ten-second window, and discusses tuning toward about six to eight seconds while warning that too little buffering can cause playback failures. That guidance concerns SRS HLS delivery; it does not guarantee YouTube ingest latency or the delay viewers will experience. SRS also documents fMP4 support in newer releases, but YouTube’s HLS ingest specification requires M2TS segments. Check compatibility rather than assuming one HLS output works for both paths. Configure the continuous stream and verify it
- Choose the ingest path. For a normal SRS-to-YouTube playlist stream, use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Select HLS only if you specifically need that path and can satisfy YouTube’s requirements above.
- Set up the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the server URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions; the exact interface can vary by stream setup.
- Match the encoder settings to the selected protocol. For YouTube’s general encoder recommendations, use a supported codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping it at or below four seconds. For HLS ingest, use the more specific muxed M2TS, codec, closed-GOP, HTTPS, rolling-playlist, and segment rules in YouTube’s HLS guide.
- Test before relying on the loop. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the live content. Check the preview or go-live flow where applicable and watch Live Control Room’s stream health and warnings while sending the playlist.
- Prepare for interruption. Keep playlist item formats and timestamps consistent, and arrange process supervision and reconnection for your encoder. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance is not a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 service.
YouTube’s general encoder settings, including supported formats and keyframe guidance, are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What “24/7” does—and does not—mean on YouTube
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a guarantee that one live broadcast can or will remain uninterrupted indefinitely. The documentation cited here does not establish a service-level guarantee for a single stream lasting 24 hours or longer. Plan your publishing process, reconnection behavior, and stream monitoring accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- YouTube rejects the HLS feed: Confirm that the encoder is uploading over HTTPS, the segments are muxed M2TS, the video/audio codecs match YouTube’s HLS requirements, and the playlist is rolling with no more than five outstanding segments. An SRS viewer-facing playlist is not automatically a compliant ingest feed.
- HLS playback buffers or falls behind: Check segment duration and playlist behavior. Shorter segments can lower latency but may increase rebuffering risk; do not treat SRS’s delivery tuning figures as a guarantee for YouTube.
- The stream has more delay than expected: YouTube says HLS ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC ingest because it is segment-based. If low latency is the priority and your encoder supports it, use RTMPS for the YouTube ingest path.
- The stream stops when the publishing process or machine stops: Check local process supervision and reconnection, or move the encoder workload to a server that remains available. A protocol alone does not keep a process running.
- The preview or stream health shows warnings: Test with representative audio and motion, review YouTube’s warnings, and check the encoder’s selected server URL, stream key, output format, and connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
