You can run a 24/7 YouTube Live feed from an India-region VPS by sending an already encoded stream through an RTMPS-capable encoder to YouTube, either directly or through an NGINX RTMP relay. The critical distinction is that accepting an RTMP contribution stream at NGINX does not, by itself, prove that NGINX can securely push it to YouTube over RTMPS. Use the current server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, verify TLS support in the exact software build, and test sustained network health before relying on an unattended broadcast.
How the 24/7 streaming path works
A typical pipeline is source media or a camera/feed → encoder → optional NGINX relay on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest. An encoder turns the source into a stream with the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. NGINX may receive a publish stream and relay it onward, but the outgoing connection still needs to meet YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
- Direct encoder-to-YouTube: FFmpeg or another RTMPS-capable encoder on the VPS connects to YouTube. This avoids a separate NGINX hop when you do not need relay/ingest functionality.
- Encoder plus NGINX relay: A local or remote encoder publishes to NGINX, which relays the stream to YouTube. Restrict who can publish to the relay and protect the YouTube key.
NGINX’s official RTMP documentation describes a dynamic module that enables RTMP, HLS, and DASH video streaming and documents an NGINX Plus module package. That establishes the module’s stated scope and one installation route; it is not a compatibility matrix for every third-party or open-source build, and it does not establish outbound RTMPS/TLS support. Check the exact module/build and its TLS behavior, or use a separate encoder whose YouTube RTMPS support you can verify. NGINX RTMP module documentation
Set up YouTube RTMPS before configuring the VPS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream’s settings. Reveal or select the RTMPS connection details.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key from the account. Configure the encoder with those exact values; do not substitute a remembered or hard-coded ingest address.
- Confirm the secure endpoint and port. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which wraps RTMP in TLS. Its RTMPS API requirements specify port 443 and a valid endpoint/path. The hostname matters for TLS SNI, so preserve the URL exactly rather than replacing it with an IP address or a different host.
- Keep the key private. Do not expose it in public configuration repositories, screenshots, or logs. If NGINX accepts publishes from a remote encoder, limit publishing access to trusted sources.
YouTube lists SSL failures among the issues that can arise when a client uses cleartext RTMP or the wrong server or port. An NGINX RTMP listener may accept an incoming contribution stream while the outbound connection to YouTube fails; test both legs independently. YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements

Choose the encoding settings for the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, which should not exceed four seconds. Match your encoder to the applicable row in YouTube’s bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube live encoder settings
| Example video format | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | YouTube’s recommendation for this resolution and frame rate, checked in 2026; not a stability guarantee or VPS specification. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | YouTube’s recommendation for this resolution and frame rate, checked in 2026; not a stability guarantee or VPS specification. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | YouTube’s recommendation for this resolution and frame rate, checked in 2026; not a stability guarantee or VPS specification. |
Use the same intended audio, motion, resolution, and frame rate in the test as in the continuous broadcast. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured input. Test before the real broadcast and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs.

Estimate VPS bandwidth and workload
Bandwidth and transfer allowance
For a 24/7 stream, outbound traffic is continuous. Estimate it from the selected encoded bitrate, then allow for protocol overhead and check the provider’s monthly transfer allowance, network limits, and any traffic shaping. A rough baseline for a constant stream is bitrate in megabits per second Ă— 0.45 GB per day; at 10 Mbps, that is about 4.5 GB per day before overhead, or about 135 GB over 30 days. This is arithmetic from the stated bitrate, not a provider allowance or measured usage. Verify that the VPS plan permits the sustained outbound traffic and can reach the chosen YouTube endpoint and port.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC), Government of India, lists 2–4 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth per stream and outbound RTMP port 1935 for its own webcast service context; its service page does not state a year. This is not a sizing guarantee for YouTube resolutions, an India VPS plan, or YouTube RTMPS over port 443. For a YouTube VPS, size egress using your chosen encoder bitrate and confirm access to the account-specific endpoint and its port. NIC webcast services

CPU and provider checks
A VPS that only relays already encoded media generally needs less CPU than one that software-encodes or transcodes video. That is a workload distinction, not a benchmark for a particular provider or plan. Before buying, confirm the provider’s region, CPU policy, network and transfer limits, support, and acceptable-use rules. There is no universal VPS size established for this setup, and no provider plan or price is established here.
Test, supervise, and recover
- Run a representative test stream. Include audio and movement similar to the planned content. Verify that the VPS can sustain the selected bitrate and that YouTube receives the stream.
- Check YouTube stream health and messages during the test and again after any configuration change. YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring health while it is running.
- Inspect encoder and relay logs for connection failures, restarts, dropped input, and TLS errors. Use service supervision or another restart mechanism appropriate to the encoder and operating system, and verify that it actually recovers after a process interruption.
- Validate the unattended case. Let the test run long enough to observe sustained egress, provider limits, reconnect behavior, and YouTube health; do not infer reliability from a successful short connection.
YouTube’s Live API models ingestion with primary and backup RTMPS addresses and resolution/frame-rate fields. Where your workflow uses those resources, use the current account-specific ingestion information rather than assuming a single fixed address. YouTube Live API: liveStreams resource

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| TLS or SSL connection error | Cleartext RTMP used for the YouTube leg, wrong endpoint or port, or an incompatible client/build. | Use the RTMPS URL and port from Live Control Room; check TLS support and preserve the hostname for SNI. |
| NGINX accepts input but YouTube stays offline | The inbound RTMP listener works, but outbound RTMPS relay support or configuration is missing or incompatible. | Test the outgoing connection independently with a verified RTMPS-capable encoder, or validate the exact NGINX module implementation and handshake. |
| Stream health warnings or unstable output | Insufficient sustained egress, incorrect encoder settings, or a mismatch between bitrate and resolution/frame rate. | Compare settings with YouTube’s guidance, check provider transfer/network limits, and run a representative test while watching YouTube health. |
| Encoder cannot publish to NGINX | Address, application/stream path, or publish permissions do not match the relay configuration. | Check the relay’s configured publish path and source access restrictions; keep publish credentials private. |
| Stream stops after a disconnect or process failure | The encoder/relay does not reconnect or its process is not restarted. | Review logs, test reconnection deliberately, and configure and verify process supervision for the relevant service. |
How much does this approach cost?
The total depends on the VPS plan, sustained transfer allowance, and whether encoding or only relaying is performed. No provider price or plan comparison is established here. Check current provider terms directly and include the cost of a server that may need to run continuously; do not assume a low-cost plan permits unlimited egress or sustained video workloads.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing continuously on YouTube rather than operate your own VPS pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI works as well as cards. For the cloud option, start your free day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can NGINX RTMP push to YouTube RTMPS?
Only if the exact NGINX module/build and configuration support the required outbound TLS connection. The generic RTMP module description alone does not establish that; verify the build or use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder.
Can a YouTube stream key be reused for a 24/7 VPS stream?
Use the key and server URL currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room for the stream you configure. Avoid publishing the key or relying on a copied address that may no longer match the account’s settings.
Does the NIC 2–4 Mbps figure size a YouTube VPS?
No. NIC gives that dedicated-bandwidth figure for its own webcast service context, not as a YouTube resolution-specific or VPS recommendation.
