If your Nginx RTMP stream is not appearing in YouTube Studio, first verify the Stream URL and stream key copied from YouTube, then check whether the relay is actually publishing upstream. For a scheduled stream, starting the encoder is not the final step: wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live. The checks below distinguish a YouTube setup issue from a relay-side problem without guessing at an Nginx directive.
1. Confirm YouTube’s Stream URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the current Stream URL and stream key into the upstream destination used by your encoder or Nginx relay. YouTube requires both for an encoder to send a feed. Use the URL and key shown for that stream rather than assuming an older saved endpoint is still correct. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this configuration.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a public screenshot, support post, or unredacted log. If you reset the key in Studio, update the relay or encoder configuration to use the new one; the old key will no longer be the one to send. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
2. Establish whether Nginx is publishing to YouTube
A running Nginx process—or a local publisher connected to Nginx—does not prove that YouTube is receiving the stream. Check the relay and encoder status or logs for two separate links: whether the local publisher reaches the relay, and whether the relay’s upstream publish to YouTube succeeds. If the local connection works but the upstream publish does not, focus on the upstream URL, key, protocol, and connection errors.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The exact Nginx RTMP directives and log messages depend on the configuration and module in use. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a specific Nginx directive as the cause, so do not change settings based on a guessed diagnosis. Keep a copy of the relevant configuration and inspect logs with the stream key redacted.
3. Check RTMP versus RTMPS
RTMP and RTMPS endpoints are not interchangeable by assumption. Use the protocol and exact endpoint provided by YouTube Live Control Room, and make sure the sending software supports the selected protocol. If the relay is configured for RTMPS, check that it uses the RTMPS URL—not an RTMP URL with the protocol label changed.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance calls out SSL errors and connection timeouts; its developer documentation specifies a TLS connection to port 443 and the correct hostname for SNI authentication. A TLS or SNI mismatch can prevent the connection even when the stream key is correct. Compare the Studio-provided endpoint with the relay’s actual destination and investigate handshake, hostname, and port errors before changing unrelated Nginx settings. See YouTube’s RTMPS help page and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
4. Follow the preview and Go live workflow
- Start the encoder or relay. Confirm that it is attempting to send the feed to the current Studio URL and key.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview. If no preview appears, return to the connection checks above; clicking Go live cannot substitute for a working incoming feed.
- Select Go live when the preview is available. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow separates starting the encoder from making the stream live to viewers.
- Check privacy if viewers cannot see it. A stream can exist in Studio without being public. Verify whether its privacy is set to private or unlisted if the issue is viewer visibility rather than a missing preview.
Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and live stream settings guidance for the current Studio controls.

5. Use YouTube’s stream state to narrow the failure
If you use the LiveStreams API or an integration that exposes its status, interpret the state as YouTube’s view of the incoming stream:
active: YouTube is receiving data via the stream.inactive: YouTube is not receiving data via the stream.ready, created, orerror: These are distinct states, not synonyms for an active incoming feed.
The API also exposes health information to help diagnose stream problems. These states can show whether YouTube is receiving data, but they do not identify which Nginx setting caused a failure. Consult the LiveStreams API reference alongside relay status and logs.

6. Troubleshoot the symptom you see
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Current Stream URL and key; whether the relay’s upstream publish succeeds; RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and connection errors. | Correct the destination or credentials, then restart the publish attempt and watch for YouTube to receive data. |
| Encoder startup error | Whether the configured key is current. | YouTube directs users of third-party encoders with startup errors to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| SSL error or connection timeout with RTMPS | The exact RTMPS endpoint, TLS connection to port 443, hostname/SNI, and whether the relay supports the selected protocol. | Correct the endpoint or TLS setup indicated by the error; do not treat an RTMP URL as an RTMPS destination. |
| Preview appears, but viewers cannot watch | Whether you selected Go live and whether the stream is private or unlisted. | Complete the Live Control Room workflow and check the stream’s privacy setting. |
| YouTube reports inactive | Whether the upstream publish is sending data and whether the relay reports a successful connection. | Trace the feed from local publisher through Nginx to YouTube; inactive means YouTube is not receiving data. |
