For a no-OBS setup, FFmpeg can read and publish media; SRS can serve as a media-server relay, and YouTube receives the live feed using the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. If you do not need a relay, FFmpeg may send directly to YouTube.
What each part does
- FFmpeg: reads media and publishes an audio/video feed. The SRS RTMP documentation demonstrates FFmpeg publishing a local file to an SRS RTMP endpoint using a stream-copy example. That demonstrates the connection, not a ready-made looping playlist command. SRS RTMP documentation
- SRS: acts as a media server. It can receive a feed from FFmpeg, but it should not be treated as a turnkey playlist scheduler that loads and loops video files for YouTube.
- YouTube Live: receives the encoder feed at its stream URL and accepts it using the stream key. YouTube describes the URL as the encoder destination and the key as the credential identifying the stream. YouTube encoder setup
Choose the architecture
| Route | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg → YouTube | You have media files on a computer or server and do not need SRS as a relay. | Fewer components and less server configuration. The machine running FFmpeg needs access to the files, a stable connection, and enough upload capacity. |
| FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube | You specifically need SRS to receive or relay the feed as part of a larger media-server setup. | Adds SRS configuration, networking, and another operational component. SRS must be configured to forward or publish the received feed onward; the exact recipe depends on the SRS release and configuration. |
The SRS documentation includes an FFmpeg-to-SRS RTMP example, while YouTube documents its encoder ingest workflow. Those components establish the high-level design, but they do not establish a complete, version-specific SRS-to-YouTube forwarding recipe. SRS RTMP documentation · YouTube encoder setup
Prepare the playlist before choosing a command
There is no safe universal command for every playlist. The exact FFmpeg approach depends on the playlist format, file paths, whether entries have compatible streams and codecs, and whether you can stream-copy or must re-encode. Do not substitute a single-file publishing example for a playlist loop: it does not establish ordering, looping, or transitions between files.
- Decide whether the source is a single file, an ordered list of files, or another playlist format.
- Check that every media path is accessible to the machine running FFmpeg and that files have compatible audio and video streams.
- Choose whether to stream-copy or re-encode based on the source and YouTube’s current encoder requirements. Stream-copy avoids transcoding but does not make incompatible input compatible.
- For an SRS route, identify the SRS version and configure its receiving and onward publishing behavior before treating the route as complete.
- Obtain the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room rather than relying on an old copied endpoint.
The SRS example uses ffmpeg -re -i ... -c copy -f flv ... to publish a local file to SRS. It is an illustration of the protocol relationship, not a validated playlist loop command or a complete YouTube configuration. SRS RTMP documentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure YouTube ingest and encoder settings
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream. Copy the current stream URL and stream key into the encoder or the relevant SRS forwarding configuration. Keep the key private: treat it like a password, and do not expose it in public commands, screenshots, or logs.
- Use RTMPS when your publishing path supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm that the encoder and each hop in the route support the transport you select; SRS’s documentation describes RTMPS server capability as version-specific, available in the cited v7 documentation for SRS v7.0.56 and later. An SRS RTMPS server and FFmpeg connecting outward to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest are distinct roles.
- Match video and audio output to YouTube’s current requirements. Check YouTube’s settings guidance for supported codecs and bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate. There is no single appropriate bitrate for every output, so choose using the actual video settings rather than copying a figure without its dimensions.
- Run a representative test. Include typical motion and audio, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health.
For current ingest, codec, and encoder-setting details, use YouTube’s encoder setup and settings.
Do not confuse HLS ingest with a playlist file
YouTube’s HLS ingest is a protocol-specific route, not a matter of pointing YouTube at an ordinary playlist file. YouTube requires HTTPS POST/PUT requests, TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. A generic HLS output or an SRS-generated playlist should not be assumed to meet these rules without checking its actual output configuration. These limits are YouTube Help requirements, not general rules for every playlist format. YouTube HLS ingest requirements

Test, protect, and operate the stream
- Start with an unlisted or scheduled test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators.
- Verify that video, audio, and playlist order behave as intended, including what happens when one file ends or a later file cannot be read.
- Test reconnect behavior and the full path you plan to use; a successful FFmpeg-to-SRS connection alone does not prove SRS is forwarding correctly to YouTube.
- Protect the stream key. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it through YouTube’s stream settings and update the publishing configuration.
- Check YouTube’s current live-streaming, copyright, and monetization rules for the material. Having a file or permission to upload it does not guarantee that it can be streamed or monetized; rights to music, footage, and other included material matter.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong or stale ingest URL/key, unsupported transport, or the publishing process is not running. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the selected RTMP/RTMPS route, and inspect encoder and SRS logs without publishing the key. |
| FFmpeg reaches SRS, but YouTube stays offline | SRS is receiving the feed but is not configured to forward it to YouTube. | Verify the onward publishing/relay configuration for your specific SRS version; an inbound RTMP example alone does not configure that second hop. |
| A file plays, but the playlist does not advance or repeat | The chosen input format or command handles a single file, not the intended playlist and loop behavior. | Confirm the playlist format, file paths, ordering, and end-of-file behavior, then validate the exact FFmpeg method for those inputs. |
| Audio or video is missing, rejected, or unhealthy | Input streams may be absent or incompatible, or output settings may not meet YouTube’s requirements. | Inspect the media streams and encoder output, then compare codecs and bitrate with YouTube’s current settings guidance. |
| Stream drops during operation | Network interruptions, process failure, or relay configuration can break the publishing path. | Check connectivity and logs at each hop, test reconnect behavior, and monitor YouTube stream health during a representative run. |
| HLS ingest is rejected | The output may not follow YouTube’s HLS request, segment, or rolling-playlist requirements. | Verify HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, and no more than 5 outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. |
