This guide covers a Docker deployment, YouTube publication, bandwidth estimates, and the limits of automatic recovery.
What you need before you start
- A VPS running an operating system supported by Docker and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream bitrate.
- Docker installed, plus permission to configure the VPS firewall and persistent storage.
- A working live source. Restreamer’s CPU and GPU needs depend on whether the source must be transcoded; do not assume every source is encoded by Restreamer.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a valid YouTube streaming ID (stream key).
- A plan for administration access. A public domain and HTTPS can be configured for public administration, but a domain is not required for publishing to YouTube.
No particular VPS provider or instance size is established here. Compare plans by their actual network allowance, continuous-streaming terms, route to YouTube ingest, and compute needs for your source and any transcoding.
Deploy Restreamer on the VPS
- Install Docker. Use the installation method for your VPS operating system, then follow the current Restreamer installation quick-start for its Docker deployment.
- Keep configuration and data persistent. The quick-start mounts
/opt/restreamer/configand/opt/restreamer/dataso configuration and data survive container replacement or restart. - Enable automatic container restart. Use the restart policy shown in the official deployment instructions. This can bring the container back after some failures or a host reboot; it is not an uptime guarantee.
- Review port mappings and firewall rules. The quick-start shows example mappings for the web interface and streaming services. Which ports you need depends on the features and configuration you select. Expose only required ports, and do not leave administration access open to the public without appropriate protection.
- Set a unique, strong password. Do not keep a default or reuse a password from another service.
- Configure HTTPS if the administration interface must be publicly accessible. Restreamer’s network manual says its Let’s Encrypt setup requires at least one public domain name and accessible TCP port 80. A public domain is for this administration/TLS arrangement, not a prerequisite for the YouTube publication path. See the Restreamer network manual.
Connect Restreamer to YouTube
- In YouTube, create or locate a valid stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and use the stream key/streaming ID associated with the broadcast. Treat it as a secret: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
- In Restreamer, choose the Publication Service. Enter the YouTube streaming ID in the publication settings and save.
- Start the publication. Start the stream in Restreamer, then check YouTube’s live control room to confirm that it receives the signal and reports healthy stream status.
- Test before relying on a continuous broadcast. Use representative movement and audio, not just a static test image, and monitor YouTube stream health. If preserving YouTube’s DVR archive matters when ending a broadcast, end it from YouTube first; Restreamer warns that interrupting the stream at its end may prevent YouTube from saving the archive.

Choose encoder settings and estimate bandwidth
For an H.264 stream, YouTube Help’s current recommendations include the following bitrate values. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular picture quality; motion, source quality, and network stability also matter.

- Use RTMPS where available, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube specifies a maximum four-second interval.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio.
- Choose a bitrate suited to the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send. The encoder/source configuration determines the stream bitrate; Restreamer is not necessarily encoding every input.
Calculate continuous transfer
For a constant bitrate, approximate decimal transfer with: Mbps Ă— 1,000,000 bits/second Ă— 86,400 seconds/day Ă· 8 Ă· 1,000,000,000 = GB/day. That works out to about 10.8 GB per day per 1 Mbps, or 324 GB per 30-day month per 1 Mbps.

These are arithmetic estimates for a continuous stream, not provider measurements. Actual use can be higher because of audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variation, other VPS traffic, and operational headroom. The bitrate is a sensible baseline for sustained VPS egress to YouTube; do not size a plan exactly to the arithmetic minimum.

What to check when comparing VPS plans
- Outbound capacity: Is the advertised network speed sustained, and does the route/region provide a reliable path to YouTube ingest?
- Monthly transfer: How much outbound data is included? What happens at the limit—overage charges, throttling, or suspension?
- Continuous video policy: Does the provider permit long-running video streams under its current terms?
- Firewall control: Can you expose only the ports required by your deployment and protect administration access?
- Compute and acceleration: If your workflow transcodes, does the VPS have suitable CPU/GPU capability? A source passed through without transcoding can have different needs.
Provider allowances, terms, and prices vary and should be verified directly before purchase. Also distinguish VPS-to-YouTube publishing from viewer delivery: Restreamer’s maximum bitrate and session controls described in its network manual concern outgoing HLS viewer traffic, not a documented cap on YouTube RTMP publication. The manual documents an unlimited default (0) for those HLS limits; that does not establish a YouTube upload ceiling.
What 24/7 operation does—and does not—mean
Restreamer documents attempts to reconnect after a dropped connection, persistence of the desired connected or disconnected stream state on disk, and restoration of that state after reboot. The browser does not have to remain open. These behaviors can reduce manual intervention, but they do not guarantee end-to-end uptime.

A VPS host or network can fail; YouTube ingest can have problems; the input source can stop; and configuration or software faults can interrupt a broadcast. No VPS provider service-level agreement is established here. Test the whole chain and check stream health rather than treating an automatic restart policy as proof that viewers always have a signal.
Troubleshooting common failures
