How to Update Restreamer Without Losing Your YouTube Stream Settings

Keep Restreamer’s persistent Docker data intact when updating, follow the separate migration path for v0.6.x, and verify the YouTube destination before going live.

To update a current Restreamer v2 Docker installation while keeping its saved settings, back up the host-mounted configuration, pull the new image, and recreate or restart the container with the same mounts and other Docker options. Restreamer stores persistent state under /core/config and /core/data; replacing a container without the correct host paths can leave it looking like a fresh installation. After the update, verify your YouTube destination and stream settings before broadcasting. Restreamer’s documentation describes migration paths, but does not guarantee that every YouTube credential or setting survives every version transition.

Before you update: identify your installation

These steps differ depending on whether you already run Restreamer v2 or have an older v0.6.x installation. Check the version shown in Restreamer and retain the Docker command, Compose file, or other deployment configuration you actually use. Note the image variant, ports, environment variables, and host paths; the update instructions assume you restart with the usual Docker settings for your installation.

  • Current v2 installation: keep the existing host mounts for /core/config and /core/data when replacing or restarting the container.
  • Legacy v0.6.x installation: use the documented migration path through v0.6.8 before moving to v2. Do not apply the short v2 procedure as if it were a legacy migration.

Restreamer recommends using the latest datarhei Restreamer, but preserving the deployment’s existing settings and taking a backup are prudent steps before changing versions. See the official update instructions and migration guide.

Update a current Restreamer v2 Docker installation

  1. Save the deployment configuration. Keep a copy of the Docker run command or Compose configuration. You will need the existing image variant, port mappings, environment variables, and host paths when you bring the container back up.
  2. Back up persistent data. Make a separate copy of the host directory mounted to /core/config. Consider copying the host directory mounted to /core/data as well. In expert mode, Restreamer’s System settings also provide a database export; you can use that as an additional backup. Consult System settings for the export option.
  3. Pull the current image. Follow Restreamer’s update instructions to pull the image you intend to run. Preserve installation-specific choices, such as a cuda image variant; do not substitute a generic image or command without checking that it matches your setup.
  4. Restart or recreate the container with the same mounts. Make sure the existing host directories still map to /core/config and /core/data. Check that the host paths are the same populated directories as before—not newly created, empty replacements. Keep the existing ports and other required Docker options.
  5. Verify Restreamer before going live. Open the interface and check the saved stream and destination configuration. Confirm that the YouTube destination is present and its settings are correct before starting your next broadcast. The stream settings manual describes the active stream configuration area.

Why the mounts matter

The v2 Docker installation documents /core/config for configuration and state and /core/data for persistent internal files. Container filesystems are not a substitute for these host-mounted paths: if a replacement container points at the wrong directory, it may not see the previous state. Review the Docker installation instructions for the paths and setup relevant to your deployment.

Migrate an older v0.6.x installation to v2

The official migration guide specifies a bridge release: upgrade a v0.6.x installation to v0.6.8 first, then move to v2. It warns that skipping v0.6.8 may result in lost settings. The following outline reflects the guide; adapt host paths and commands to your actual deployment rather than copying example paths blindly.

  1. Back up the existing configuration and retain the Docker setup. Keep the host directory and deployment details available throughout the migration.
  2. Upgrade to v0.6.8. Start that version and stream from the video source as directed by the migration guide.
  3. Stop and remove the v0.6.8 container. Leave the host data in place.
  4. Prepare the v2 mounts. Change the configuration mount target from /restreamer/db to /core/config and add a mount for /core/data. The guide’s example changes /mnt/restreamer/db:/restreamer/db to /mnt/restreamer/db:/core/config and adds /opt/restreamer/data:/core/data; use the paths that match your machine.
  5. Pull and start the v2 image. Keep the existing host configuration directory connected so v2 can import the legacy settings. On first v2 startup, legacy RS_ environment values are transferred and may then be removed, as described in the guide.
  6. Inspect the imported configuration. The migration guide says v2 creates new db.json and config.json files in the mounted configuration directory. Check the stream and YouTube destination in the interface before broadcasting.

Protect the YouTube destination during the update

The documented backup and migration steps protect Restreamer’s stored configuration, but the cited instructions do not promise that every YouTube destination credential or setting is retained across every version transition or installation method. Treat verification as part of the update, not as an optional final check: inspect the destination and stream settings in Restreamer, and confirm the YouTube connection is ready before you start the broadcast. Do not assume an update succeeded merely because the container starts.

Rollback: a narrow version-specific warning

The migration guide describes a limited downgrade route for Restreamer 2.4.0 and later: it notes that FFmpeg 5.1.2 is incompatible with earlier versions and gives a route to versions 2.3.x or earlier involving database-file renaming and an older image. It also warns that processes created with 2.4.0 or later cannot be restored by that route. This is not a universal rollback recipe; consult the guide for your exact version and installation before attempting a downgrade.

Troubleshooting after the update

Restreamer opens as a fresh installation

Likely cause: the replacement container is not using the previous host directory, or a mount targets the wrong container path. Fix: stop the container and compare its mounts with the saved Docker configuration. Confirm that the populated host directories are mounted to /core/config and /core/data.

The YouTube destination or stream settings are missing

Likely cause: the configuration was not imported, the wrong configuration directory is mounted, or the version transition did not preserve the destination details. Fix: verify the mount first, then inspect the migration or database backup. Re-enter or reauthorize destination settings if necessary, and confirm them before broadcasting; the documentation does not establish a universal credential-retention guarantee.

The legacy migration did not bring settings into v2

Likely cause: the required v0.6.8 bridge was skipped, or the old configuration directory was not mounted to /core/config. Fix: check the sequence and paths against the migration guide. Do not improvise a downgrade or delete the old data while investigating.

The updated container does not behave like the previous one

Likely cause: an image variant, port, environment variable, or other Docker option changed during recreation. Fix: compare the running configuration with the saved command or Compose file and restore the installation-specific choices. Restreamer also documents checking for updates through System settings; its system settings documentation explains that area.
