For an H.264 YouTube news stream, a practical baseline to test is RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, 1080p at 30 fps, and 14 Mbps video. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 if your connection cannot reliably sustain the 1080p profile. These are YouTube encoder recommendations—not an India-specific preset or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Astra settings control Astra’s configured sources and outputs; they do not replace the settings of the encoder or relay that sends video to YouTube.
Start with the YouTube output settings
Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate for the feed going to YouTube, then set the matching bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; they are platform guidance, not results measured on a particular Indian connection. YouTube’s table can change, so check its live encoder settings when configuring a new production chain.
| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 240p–720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
For a typical news feed, 1080p30 at 14 Mbps is a reasonable starting profile when the encoder and connection can sustain it. If not, 720p30 at 8 Mbps is a lower-bitrate option. Select based on the detail and motion your programme needs and the upload capacity available at the actual broadcast location. YouTube does not publish a separate India bitrate preset or establish a single connection speed that will work across Indian providers and regions. Measure the real connection and leave headroom rather than assuming a speed test guarantees a stable continuous upload.
Codec, rate control, keyframes, and audio
- Delivery: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery.
- Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codecs: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with up to 60 fps. The bitrate table above is specifically for H.264; do not apply its numbers to another codec’s column.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
- 5.1 audio: YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- SDR colour: Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Keep Astra controls separate from encoder settings
Cesbo describes an Astra stream as a media flow that receives content from sources, processes it, and delivers it to clients. Astra channel options govern that configured flow. YouTube’s bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframe, and delivery settings apply to the feed sent to YouTube by the relevant encoder or relay.

The official Astra documentation does not establish a universal direct YouTube RTMPS output route or a field-by-field YouTube profile. Your installation may use a separate encoder or relay. Confirm the Astra version and the actual source-to-YouTube chain before looking for specific menu fields; do not treat this baseline as a verified one-click Astra preset.
On-demand and keep-active behavior
Astra’s general settings provide default stream behavior unless an individual stream overrides it. Relevant options include “Start stream on demand” and “HTTP Keep Active.” The documentation says an HTTP Keep Active value of zero turns a channel off immediately when its last client closes the session. For a continuous design, check whether on-demand start and keep-active behavior match how your sources and outputs are used. Saving general settings restarts Astra, so account for that when changing a running service.

Astra’s advanced stream settings also include “Enable monitoring,” on-demand start, and “Keep Active.” Cesbo says Astra waits for an incoming request to start a stream when on-demand mode is enabled, and notes that on-demand start is turned off for channels with UDP or HLS outputs. Confirm the specific stream type and output in your deployment before relying on these controls.
Backup sources and delays
Astra general settings include “Backup Start Delay” and “Backup Return Delay.” Check these against the actual primary and backup source arrangement so a source change behaves as intended. These are Astra channel-operation controls; they do not configure YouTube’s encoder bitrate or prove that the outgoing YouTube feed is healthy.

Configure, test, and monitor a continuous broadcast
- Map the chain. Identify the Astra version, incoming source, any encoder or relay, and the component that sends the final feed to YouTube. Apply YouTube’s output recommendations at that sending component.
- Pick a profile. Select codec, resolution, and frame rate first. For H.264, use the corresponding recommendation in the table; for example, 1080p30 is 14 Mbps and 720p30 is 8 Mbps.
- Set the transport and timing. Configure RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval where supported by the YouTube encoder path.
- Check Astra’s continuous-operation behavior. Review demand-start, keep-active, monitoring, and backup delay settings for the configured stream and outputs. Do not assume a YouTube status confirms Astra’s own source is healthy.
- Test representative programming. Run the exact encoder and production connection with representative audio, motion, graphics, and source changes before relying on a long broadcast. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch stream health. YouTube Live Streaming API statuses include ready, active, inactive, created, and error. Its health guidance identifies warnings such as low video bitrate and video ingestion starvation, which indicate that YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming.
- Align primary and backup ingestion. If you use both, keep frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, and bitrate consistent. YouTube’s API health documentation identifies mismatches in these settings as configuration issues.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Troubleshooting common continuous-stream problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports low video bitrate | The outgoing feed is below the expected bitrate or is not arriving consistently. | Check the encoder’s selected bitrate and whether the actual connection can sustain it. Consider a lower-resolution profile with its corresponding recommendation, then test again. |
| Video ingestion starvation or choppy playback | YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming; the encoder, relay, source, or connection may be interrupting delivery. | Check the whole chain, not just Astra. Test the exact production connection and monitor YouTube stream health during operation. |
| Backup ingestion has configuration warnings | Primary and backup may differ in frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, or bitrate. | Align those settings across both feeds and check health again. |
| Astra channel stops when a client disconnects | HTTP Keep Active may be zero, or the stream may be configured to start on demand. | Review Astra’s global defaults and per-stream overrides, plus the selected output type. Change only after confirming how clients and sources use the channel. |
| Changing Astra defaults interrupts service | Saving general settings restarts Astra. | Schedule the change for a suitable maintenance window and verify the channel and YouTube feed afterward. |
| YouTube stops accepting the encoder feed | The stream key may be incorrect, reset, or exposed. | Verify the current key in Live Control Room. If compromised, reset it there and replace it in the sending encoder. |
Copyright and news programming checks
These technical settings do not grant rights to the footage, music, clips, or other material in a news broadcast. Make sure the channel has the rights or permissions needed for every item it streams, including material in a continuous loop. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content decisions are separate from encoder health: a technically healthy feed does not establish that the programme is authorized or eligible for monetization.
Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight, alongside your own rights records and YouTube’s applicable policies.
