At a steady 1 Mbps, a stream sends about 450 MB of encoded payload per hour; your phone’s billed usage may be higher because of network overhead, retransmissions, and other app traffic. There is no single best setting for every Indian mobile connection, so test the settings on your own network before an important broadcast.
How to change Larix settings to use less data
- Open Larix Broadcaster’s video or encoder settings. Find the bitrate control. Menu names and available controls can vary by app version and operating system; the available guidance does not establish a single current menu path for every device.
- Reduce the target video bitrate. Start with a modest output such as 720p at 30 fps, then choose a bitrate that balances image quality and a stable upload. YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30, so a lower target saves data but falls below that recommendation. Treat lower settings as options to test, not guaranteed YouTube-approved values.
- If the picture is unacceptable or the stream is unstable, adjust the output. Try a lower resolution, and reduce frame rate if the content does not need smooth fast motion. Retest after each change so you can identify its effect. Larix uses the device’s system encoder, so a selected frame rate or bitrate is not necessarily the exact output the phone will produce.
- Connect only the destinations you need. Beeline’s Larix setup guide says the app can stream to up to three destinations simultaneously. For a YouTube-only broadcast, leave other destinations disabled unless you deliberately need them.
For a mostly static talking-head or documentary-style shot, the image may remain acceptable at a lower bitrate than a fast-moving scene, but there is no universal numeric adjustment. Test with movement and sound representative of the actual broadcast.
Estimate how much data a stream will use
For a steady bitrate, estimate encoded payload with this formula:
Data in MB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 450 × duration in hours

| Bitrate | Approximate encoded payload per hour |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | About 450 MB |
| 2 Mbps | About 900 MB |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,800 MB (1.8 GB decimal) |
These are arithmetic estimates of encoded payload, not measurements of a mobile carrier’s billing. Actual usage can differ if the bitrate varies or because cellular protocols, retransmissions, and other phone activity add traffic. If Larix or the encoder varies bitrate during a session, the average bitrate is more useful than the target for estimating total payload.
Balance data savings against YouTube ingest guidance
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are from its live encoder help page, accessed in 2026. They are quality and ingest guidance, not data-saving caps. Lowering bitrate reduces encoded data, but can make detail break up or motion look worse; lowering resolution or frame rate can sometimes preserve a more usable image at a lower bitrate.

YouTube also specifies CBR encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds; audio may use AAC or MP3. Larix and the phone encoder may limit which controls are available. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current recommendations.
Understand what Larix does with bitrate and adaptive settings
Larix’s FAQ says Android lets users type a bitrate, while iOS offers predefined values and selects a default based on resolution. In either case, the device encoder treats the value as a target, not necessarily a strict cap. The FAQ notes that Android’s variable-bitrate quality-floor behavior can exceed a low target; holding a low bitrate regardless of image quality requires a device with CBR support. See the Larix Broadcaster FAQ.

Larix also documents adaptive-bitrate modes and variable frame rate, but availability and behavior depend on device, operating system, protocol, and mode. For RTMP or RTSP, Hybrid mode also considers latency; on Android, Hybrid is listed only for SRT, while the listed iOS support includes RTMP, RTSP, and SRT. Do not assume every adaptive mode applies in the same way to a YouTube RTMP stream. Adaptive bitrate responds to delivery conditions, not to a monthly data limit, and may raise bitrate again when the connection improves.
Larix’s resolution-based defaults are 2160p: 4,500 Kbps; 1080p: 3,000 Kbps; 720p: 2,000 Kbps; 540p: 1,500 Kbps; 480p: 1,000 Kbps; 360p: 700 Kbps; 288p: 500 Kbps; and 144p: 300 Kbps. These are Larix defaults, not YouTube recommendations. The FAQ says HEVC halves those defaults and 50 fps or above multiplies them by 1.6. Larix uses the system encoder and cannot precisely control frame rate; on Android a selected range is a recommendation to the encoder, and iOS output can vary.

Test your mobile connection before going live
- Use the same phone, cellular connection, camera movement, and audio you expect to use for the real broadcast.
- Run a short private or unlisted test stream and check YouTube’s stream health as well as Larix’s available session statistics.
- Change one setting at a time. If the stream is stable but uses more data than your allowance permits, lower the target bitrate; if the image suffers, test lower resolution or frame rate and compare again.
- Estimate a longer session using the average bitrate: average Mbps × 450 MB × hours. Allow headroom in your data plan for overhead and other phone traffic.
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health. Upload capacity varies with location and time; there is no universal setting established for Indian carriers. The test on your own connection is the practical check.
Troubleshoot high usage or unstable video
- Usage is higher than your estimate: Check the actual or average bitrate in Larix’s session statistics if available. A target may not be a hard cap on the phone, and other apps or network overhead also count toward mobile usage.
- The image looks poor after lowering bitrate: Raise the bitrate if the connection and allowance permit, or try a lower resolution or frame rate so the encoder has less detail or motion to carry.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: Test a lower output and verify that the mobile upload is stable at the time and place you will broadcast. Compare results after each change.
- Data use rises with multiple outputs: Disable extra Larix destinations if they are not needed. The sources do not quantify the added traffic, so verify usage rather than assuming an exact multiplier.
- The connection repeatedly drops: Avoid unnecessary manual restarts and check whether reconnecting is causing additional traffic. The retry overhead is not quantified, so treat this as a practical diagnostic rather than a guaranteed saving.
