Creator Atsushi Ohkubo confirms that Fire Force leads into the world of Soul Eater: a disaster ends one reality, the world of Fire Force follows, and another disaster transforms it into the world of his earlier series. The connection is intentional, though Ohkubo says he worked out its details as he wrote.
What is the connection between Fire Force and Soul Eater?
Fire Force is a predecessor to Soul Eater in the broad chronology Ohkubo describes. The manga’s ending connects its world to the setting of his earlier series, making the relationship more than a visual Easter egg. In an interview with Anime Corner, Ohkubo explained: “reality ended because of a natural disaster, and it became the world of Fire Force. That was also ended by a disaster and then it goes into the world of Soul Eater.” (Anime Corner interview)

That account establishes the sequence, but not a precise elapsed time between the stories. It also does not, on its own, provide a complete explanation of every event or design element in either series.
Did Ohkubo plan the connection from the start?
He had the broad idea early, but not a fully specified route to the ending. Ohkubo said he wanted to connect Fire Force with his previous work, initially keeping the link ambiguous enough to hint at Soul Eater. He summarized the balance this way: “both yes, I planned it from the beginning, yet I also didn’t plan it all the way to the end.” (Anime Corner interview)

A separate interview likewise reports that Ohkubo wanted Fire Force to occupy a world between contemporary reality and Soul Eater, while the specifics of that connection were still developing. (AnimeClick interview)
How do the two series differ?
The shared world does not mean the stories have the same tone or central conflict. Ohkubo described Fire Force as closer to reality, with scientific elements, and Soul Eater as more strongly oriented toward fantasy. Their core actions differ, too: the former focuses on saving people, while characters in the latter take souls to defeat enemies. (Anime Corner interview)

Their power systems reflect that distinction. Ohkubo said Soul Eater uses a variety of abilities, whereas he deliberately built Fire Force around fire as its central power. (Anime News Network interview)
Do you need to read or watch Soul Eater first?
No. The connection is a destination revealed by the ending of the Fire Force manga, not a prerequisite for understanding its main story. Reading Soul Eater first may make the broader link more recognizable, but the creator’s confirmation is enough to understand the basic chronology without treating the series as one continuous narrative.

If you want the full transition as Ohkubo established it, the Fire Force manga is the relevant source: his interview discusses its ending, while the evidence cited here does not establish how an anime adaptation handles those final details. For a broader sense of the connected destination, read Soul Eater afterward.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the connection does—and does not—establish
- Established: Ohkubo intended the two series to share a world-history connection, with the Fire Force world leading into Soul Eater.
- Not established by the interviews: an exact number of years between the settings, a detailed family lineage, or a definitive explanation for every recurring visual or character resemblance.
Those finer points require checking the manga itself; the creator interviews support the broad transition, not a chapter-by-chapter lore guide.
