Milton’s red stapler started as a modified Swingline prop, not a red retail product. The production changed its shape and painted it red so it would stand out on screen. After the film inspired requests from fans, Swingline began making red staplers for consumers—but the familiar red Swingline 747 was a later retail counterpart, not the exact prop used in filming.
Why is Milton’s stapler red?
Director Mike Judge wanted the stapler to stand out. At the time, Swingline’s staplers came in shades of gray and dark blue, according to Judge’s account in The Ringer’s 2019 oral history of Office Space. “I wanted it to stand out so I said, ‘Let’s make it red.’”
The production team chose a Swingline after running into clearance problems with Boston and Bostitch, Judge said. Swingline did not object to its name appearing in the film. The red color was therefore a creative choice for the movie, not a color option the company already sold.
How the production made the prop
Prop designer and set decorator Gilbert found a Swingline stapler, then modified it to match Judge’s preferred look. He built up the top to make it more bulbous, sanded the added material, and painted the stapler red. The team also obtained permission to use a vinyl Swingline logo treatment. Gilbert said the production made 10 staplers for the film; he summed up the visual direction this way: “The mandate was that it would be red.”

Actor Stephen Root, who played Milton, recalled practicing his reach for the stapler because Milton’s thick glasses affected his depth perception. In a 2019 interview with KCUR/NPR, Root also noted, “Thankfully we’d painted it red; Swingline didn’t make red ones back then.”
Did Swingline make red staplers before the film?
According to Judge and Root, no: the red stapler was a production-painted prop, and Swingline did not make red models at the time. The Washington Post reported in 2005 that requests prompted Swingline to start manufacturing red staplers. The Ringer’s oral history describes the company’s later response as a reaction to the cultural movement sparked by the movie. Swingline senior marketing manager Theresa Hardy said, “We’ve been probably officially making different variations of the red stapler for the better part of 10 years now.”

The accounts establish that fan requests helped bring red staplers to retail, but they do not establish an exact launch date from a primary company announcement.
Is the red Swingline 747 the stapler used in Office Space?
No. The film prop and the later retail product are connected by the movie’s influence, but they are not the same thing. The production modified and painted a Swingline for filming; the red Swingline 747 is a consumer product associated with the story that followed. The reporting does not identify the 747 as the standard on-set model or as an exact replica of the screen-used prop.

Can you buy Milton’s red stapler?
You may find red Swingline staplers sold as consumer products, including the 747 associated with the film’s cultural afterlife. That does not make one an original screen-used prop. Current stock and the provenance of any individual item offered for sale are not established by the cited accounts; a claim that a stapler was used in filming would need separate, item-specific evidence.
