If a YouTube video looks soft in VLC on a 4G hotspot, first check YouTube’s selected playback quality; VLC’s network cache cannot make the picture sharper. If the video stalls, test the connection and playback app before adjusting VLC’s cache. There is no single best resolution or cache value for every hotspot, device, and video.
First identify the problem: blur, buffering, or both
- Blur without stalls: the player may have selected a lower resolution, or the original upload may not be available at a higher quality. Check the quality setting and the same video in YouTube’s app or website.
- Stalls or long starts: the hotspot may not be providing steady throughput, or other devices may be using the connection. A larger VLC cache may help smooth some interruptions, but it adds waiting time.
- Blur and stalls: YouTube may be adapting quality to changing viewing conditions. Try a lower manual resolution or Data saver, then compare playback in YouTube’s own app or browser.
YouTube says it adjusts video quality based on factors including connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload, and browser support. A higher-resolution option cannot restore detail that is not present in the source upload. YouTube Help: change video quality.
Set YouTube quality before changing VLC
On Android
- Open the video in YouTube and tap the player’s Settings gear.
- Tap Quality. Choose Auto if hotspot conditions change frequently.
- If the video is smooth but too soft, select Advanced and test a higher resolution that is actually offered for that video.
- If data use or buffering matters more than sharpness, choose Data saver or a lower available resolution.
YouTube’s Android options include Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, and Advanced/manual resolution. Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often; Data saver lowers quality and may start faster. On a computer browser
Open the YouTube player’s Settings → Quality and compare Auto with an available manual resolution. If the video is blurry in both VLC and YouTube, the selected quality, source upload, or connection is more likely to explain it than VLC’s cache alone.

Use VLC’s network cache only for buffering
On VLC for Android, the documented Network caching control is under More → Settings → Advanced (the exact menu presentation can vary by app version). VideoLAN describes this setting as buffering network media for software decoding. A larger value can reduce some buffering on a slow connection, but it also increases the wait before playback and can make seeking feel slower. It does not increase resolution or sharpen the image.
Start with the default. If playback repeatedly stalls, change the cache modestly, test the same section again, and revert if startup or seek delay becomes inconvenient. VideoLAN does not specify one universally best millisecond value. Use Clear in the setting if you want to reset it. VideoLAN VLC for Android documentation: Advanced settings.

Avoid using frame skip as a first fix for a low-quality picture: VideoLAN notes that it lowers video quality. It is a performance option, not a way to improve network delivery.
Check whether the hotspot is the bottleneck
- Play the same video in YouTube’s own app or at youtube.com, then compare it with VLC.
- If available, test the video over another connection. If quality or stability improves, the hotspot connection is a likely factor.
- Pause downloads and reduce activity from other devices connected to the hotspot, then test again.
- Check whether the problem changes with location or signal conditions. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a specific carrier or plan issue.
YouTube recommends a connection speed of at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee for every hotspot, video, codec, or changing mobile connection. What VLC support for streams does—and does not—mean
VideoLAN lists support for network stream formats including HLS and DASH on VLC for Android. That does not guarantee that every YouTube URL will play correctly in VLC or that VLC will behave like YouTube’s adaptive player. For diagnosis, compare with YouTube’s app or website rather than assuming VLC is the best playback route. VLC for Android.
When an offline download may be more practical in India
If a connection is unreliable, YouTube offline downloads may be an option for eligible videos in India, subject to availability and rights. YouTube says higher-quality downloads use more data and storage; shows and movies available for purchase are excluded from the stated offline-download availability.
