Not confirmed. YouTube can receive a live encoder feed and lets you schedule a live event, but its instructions do not establish that VLC can switch videos automatically on a timetable—or confirm that a current VLC release can send YouTube’s recommended RTMPS feed. Treat the VLC workflow as unverified until you check current VLC documentation and test it end to end.
Two separate questions: sending a feed and switching videos
To stream to YouTube, an encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and a stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, and provides the ingest details in Live Control Room. Its encoder guidance explains how to connect an encoder and start a stream, but it does not establish that VLC supports the required current ingest setup.
Automating which video is sent at a particular time is a separate capability. YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature creates an event and watch-page workflow; it does not schedule video changes within the encoder feed. The available YouTube guidance does not document timed source switching in VLC.
Accordingly, the evidence here supports neither a confident “yes” nor a definitive “no” about current VLC behavior. Confirm both RTMPS compatibility and time-triggered switching against documentation for the VLC version you plan to use before relying on it.

What YouTube’s documented workflow does
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Scheduling prepares the event; it does not start the encoder or choose timed video changes.
- Get the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Start and verify the encoder feed. Check the YouTube preview and stream health before making the event public or depending on it. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend preparing in advance, checking the preview, confirming access, and monitoring audio and video.
- End the event through the live controls. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes using the live controls to end the event; scheduling the event alone does not manage the encoder’s content schedule.
Protect the stream key
The stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, put it in a public script, or share it in screenshots. YouTube documents creating and resetting stream keys in Manage live stream settings; only a channel owner or manager can reset a key.
How to verify a proposed VLC schedule safely
- Check the exact VLC release. Find current VLC documentation or maintained project support material that explicitly covers YouTube ingest and the protocol you intend to use, especially RTMPS. Do not infer support merely because VLC can play a file or stream media generally.
- Check the scheduling mechanism separately. Look for documented time-triggered changes between local video files or playlist entries. A playlist that plays sequentially is not proof that it can select different videos at specified clock times.
- Test the whole path before relying on it. Use a private or unlisted event, connect the encoder, and verify that YouTube receives the feed and that each intended change occurs at the right time. The available evidence does not confirm that VLC provides this timed switching.
- Check stream quality and stability. Match the encoder output to your available upload capacity, then inspect stream health and monitor audio and video. YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page gives recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use its applicable current values rather than copying a bitrate without regard to those settings.
Common failure points
- YouTube does not receive the feed: recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the event is ready in Live Control Room, and verify the selected ingest protocol against current VLC documentation. Never share the key while troubleshooting.
- The event is scheduled but no video appears: scheduling the YouTube event does not itself connect or start the encoder. Follow the encoder connection and start steps, then check the preview.
- The feed starts but does not change videos on schedule: YouTube’s event scheduler does not control the encoder’s source selection. Verify that the VLC version and any scheduling method explicitly support time-based source changes.
- Video or audio is unstable: check stream health, match output quality to upload capacity, and monitor both audio and video. Use YouTube’s resolution-, frame-rate-, and codec-specific guidance rather than assuming one bitrate fits every setup.
