There is no universal CPU or RAM minimum for sending one 1080p loop to YouTube through NGINX RTMP. If NGINX only relays an already encoded, YouTube-compatible stream, it does not encode the video; if you use FFmpeg to transcode, record, or package additional outputs, those tasks change the server requirements. Size the host for the work it actually does, then verify it with an end-to-end test.
Start by deciding whether NGINX will relay or transcode
Relay an already encoded stream
A relay passes an existing stream onward to YouTube. The arut nginx-rtmp-module documentation describes push and pull relaying, as well as live RTMP, HLS, and DASH functions. For a loop whose video and audio already meet the intended YouTube ingest settings, relay avoids video encoding on the NGINX host. The host still needs a compatible module and protocol setup, a stable connection, enough sustained upload capacity, and reliable process supervision.
Transcode with FFmpeg only when you need to change the stream
If the source needs a different codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe cadence, FFmpeg can read a published stream, transform it, and publish the result onward. That is a separate encoding workload, not something relay alone does. Its compute demand depends on the input and output settings, codec, software or hardware encoder, quality target or preset, source complexity, and concurrent outputs. The available documentation does not establish a universal CPU benchmark for those combinations.
Account for any additional roles
Local recording, HLS or DASH packaging, and serving viewers add work beyond pushing one stream to YouTube. Treat each function separately: recording requires storage sized for the intended retention, while viewer delivery adds its own output-bandwidth and audience-capacity considerations. The module documentation describes these capabilities but does not specify a universal disk size or capacity for them.

Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations for the output
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance gives different recommendations by codec and frame rate. These are settings for the stream sent to YouTube, not hardware specifications for the NGINX server.
| 1080p output | Codec | Recommended video bitrate | Minimum video bitrate, if stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 60 fps | H.264 | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | Not stated in the cited YouTube guidance |
| 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | Not stated in the cited YouTube guidance |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS, which adds security to RTMP. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3 and specifies 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio, with 44.1 kHz stereo and 48 kHz 5.1 sample rates. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or ingest route will behave identically.

Allow network headroom above the encoded video and audio rates for protocol overhead, bitrate variation, other traffic, and reconnects. Test sustained upload over the actual route to YouTube rather than treating the video bitrate as the whole network requirement. YouTube advises running a speed test and testing before a stream, then monitoring stream health.
Choose the NGINX RTMP module for your distribution
Do not assume that an ordinary NGINX installation includes RTMP support. NGINX’s RTMP documentation describes installation of a dynamic module for NGINX Plus, while its technical specifications identify RTMP/DASH streaming as provided by a third-party RTMP module. The arut nginx-rtmp-module project separately documents building its module with NGINX. These are distinct deployment routes; the NGINX Plus package instructions do not automatically apply to every open-source NGINX distribution.

- Check that the module is compatible with the exact NGINX distribution and version you plan to run.
- Confirm the operating-system and package support for the chosen module build.
- Verify that the selected build and configuration support the RTMPS path you intend to use.
- For multiple NGINX workers, the arut module documents automatic stream pushing between workers. That behavior does not remove an FFmpeg encoding bottleneck or increase the capacity of a constrained upstream connection by itself.
Build and validate the unattended stream
There is no source-backed minimum number of vCPUs, RAM, disk, or a specific server family for one 1080p relay. Use the following workload-first procedure instead of choosing a host from the resolution alone.
- Inspect the loop source. Identify its codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval. Decide whether it already meets your chosen YouTube output settings or whether it needs conversion.
- Choose the stream path. For a compatible source, configure the selected NGINX RTMP module to accept or pull the published stream and push it to YouTube. If conversion is necessary, add FFmpeg as a separate process and configure its output to match the target YouTube settings.
- Use your channel’s stream setup. Obtain the ingest address and stream key from YouTube’s stream setup, select the intended primary or backup ingest route if applicable, and configure the publisher privately. Do not put a stream key in public configuration examples, logs, screenshots, or shared repositories.
- Test the complete route. Run the actual loop through the chosen host and into YouTube. For a relay, measure host CPU and memory, sustained network throughput, dropped frames, and disconnect or reconnect behavior. For a transcode, benchmark the actual FFmpeg command and encoder settings at the target output, including any concurrent streams.
- Monitor platform and host health. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators alongside host resource use and network stability. Confirm that the loop remains live and that the publishing process recovers as intended after a source or connection interruption.
- Size extra functions independently. If you record locally, estimate storage from the recording bitrate and retention you need. If you package HLS/DASH or serve viewers, measure those outputs and audience demand separately from YouTube ingest.
The workflow is an engineering approach based on the documented difference between relaying, transcoding, and platform ingest settings; it is not a published hardware specification. The cited guidance does not set a required duration for a 24/7 soak test, so choose a representative validation period for your own operational needs rather than presenting one as a YouTube requirement.

Plan copyright and channel-policy checks before looping
A looped format does not itself establish that you have the rights to every video, music track, image, or other material in the stream. Before going live, confirm that the channel owner has permission or another valid basis to use each element, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies for the channel and content involved. Do not assume that permission to upload a recording automatically resolves every live-use or monetization question. Reusing the same material continuously can also raise separate originality and monetization considerations; a server configuration cannot determine eligibility or guarantee an outcome.

- YouTube does not receive a stream: Verify the ingest address, stream key, selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol, and that the configured module actually loaded. Check the publisher and NGINX logs without exposing the key.
- Stream health reports bitrate or format trouble: Compare the output codec, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and audio format with YouTube’s recommendations for that exact mode. Confirm that a transcode, if used, produces the intended output rather than merely assuming the source was changed.
- Frames drop or the stream repeatedly disconnects: Measure sustained upload on the actual route, inspect competing network traffic and host resource use, and check whether the source, relay, or FFmpeg process is restarting. A nominal network speed or idle CPU reading does not validate the complete path under load.
- CPU is heavily loaded: Determine whether FFmpeg is encoding, whether there are concurrent outputs, or whether packaging or recording is enabled. A relay-only design and a software transcode have different compute demands.
- The loop stops after a process or network failure: Check process supervision and restart behavior, then test recovery through YouTube’s ingest path. Do not count automatic recovery as proven until the end-to-end configuration has been exercised.
- The module is missing or will not load: Recheck the exact NGINX build, module compatibility, package source, operating-system support, and whether the chosen installation instructions match NGINX Plus or an open-source build.
