PRISM supports streaming to YouTube, but its official guidance does not establish closed-lid operation or uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. Test your exact laptop and operating-system configuration before relying on it. Also, YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive; that is an archive limitation, not proof that YouTube stops the live stream at 12 hours.
What determines whether the stream keeps running?
PRISM can send a desktop stream to YouTube through an account connection or RTMP stream details. Whether closing your laptop lid interrupts that stream is a separate question: the laptop and operating system determine what happens to the computer when the lid closes. The PRISM and YouTube materials reviewed do not give a universal setting or hardware recipe for keeping every laptop awake with its lid shut.
Before planning a long broadcast, identify your laptop model and operating system, then consult the current power-management guidance from the laptop manufacturer and OS vendor. Treat closed-lid streaming as a configuration to verify, not a PRISM feature.
Check that your computer can handle PRISM

Choose encoding settings for the computer and connection you actually have. PRISM’s performance guidance explains that encoder choices affect CPU and GPU load; software encoding can increase CPU load, and the guide cautions that settings beyond a computer’s capabilities may cause performance problems. PRISM says of an encoder-related function: “Since this function increases CPU and GPU load, we recommend limiting its usage.” Avoid assuming that the highest resolution or frame rate is suitable without checking your system’s headroom. Test the exact closed-lid setup before a long stream
- Confirm the streaming setup first. In PRISM’s desktop app, connect your YouTube account or configure the stream using YouTube’s RTMP details. Follow PRISM’s current YouTube setup guidance; the available connection options do not establish that the laptop will stay awake with its lid closed.
- Check lid and sleep behavior. Use the current instructions for your specific laptop model and operating system to determine what closing the lid does. Do not assume that one Windows or macOS setting applies to every device.
- Run a test with the lid in its intended position. Keep the computer on reliable power and use the network connection you expect to use for the real broadcast. Verify that YouTube continues receiving the stream after you close the lid, and check both audio and video.
- Plan to detect a failure. Arrange for someone to monitor the broadcast or use a monitoring plan that can alert you if video, audio, or the connection fails. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring stream quality in its live-streaming tips.
- Record locally if the full program matters. Keep a local recording if you need a complete replay; do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a broadcast longer than 12 hours.
Power, heat, encoder load, network stability, and the need for a complete recording are all worth evaluating for your setup. The official guidance reviewed does not establish that an external monitor, dock, cooling stand, or other accessory is universally required.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Not necessarily. YouTube Help says that streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The warning concerns whether the broadcast is saved as an archive. It does not establish a 12-hour maximum for the live broadcast itself. If the full 24-hour program must be preserved, make and check a local recording. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
