You can send a local video to YouTube Live from Ubuntu 24.04 with GStreamer, but the RTMPS pipeline and the repeating loop are separate problems. GStreamer provides the building blocks to decode, encode, mux and send a stream; a finite file normally reaches end-of-stream (EOS), so continuous playback needs an application or controller to restart or seek the source. The official documentation reviewed does not establish a universal one-command loop for arbitrary files.
What you need before building the stream
- An Ubuntu 24.04 system with GStreamer tools and plugins appropriate to your video, audio and output pipeline.
- A YouTube encoder-based live stream and its current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A reliable upload connection with enough headroom for your chosen bitrate.
- A looping strategy that handles file EOS; the RTMPS sink does not repeat a file by itself.
Ubuntu Noble documents gst-launch-1.0 in gstreamer1.0-tools version 1.24.2-1ubuntu0.1. That identifies the tools package, not every plugin on your machine. Plugin availability varies with installed packages and repositories, so inspect the actual system before assembling a pipeline. See the Ubuntu Noble gst-launch-1.0 manpage.
Install tools and inspect the plugins

Install the command-line tools package:
sudo apt update sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-tools -
Check which elements are available for your media and output. For example:
gst-inspect-1.0 decodebin gst-inspect-1.0 x264enc gst-inspect-1.0 flvmux gst-inspect-1.0 rtmpsinkRemove the leading space before each command if copying the block into a shell. Also inspect an AAC encoder appropriate to your installation and the decoder required by your source file. If an element is not found, install the plugin package that provides it for your Ubuntu repositories, then inspect it again. The GStreamer reference classifies

Confirm the caps and supported formats of the elements you plan to connect. A source file may need conversion or resampling before encoding, and the available encoder may differ from the examples in documentation.
Create the YouTube encoder stream and protect its key

Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based stream.

Copy the ingest URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the actual endpoint shown there rather than a hostname copied from an example.

Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption. Select the RTMPS URL through the lock icon in stream settings, as described in YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or commit it in a public script or repository. Keep it out of logs and shared command history where possible.
First-time YouTube live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance. Allow for that before a scheduled broadcast.
Build the GStreamer output pipeline
The conceptual path is:
local file → decode → normalize/convert → encode video and audio → flvmux → rtmpsink
GStreamer’s rtmpsink reference documents the sink receiving video/x-flv and shows the flvmux ! rtmpsink pattern. Its example uses a test stream, a legacy encoder and localhost RTMP; it demonstrates the mux-to-sink relationship, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. The precise pipeline depends on the codecs in your file, the locally installed plugins, the chosen encoders and the current ingest endpoint. Do not copy a placeholder URL or key into a live command.

For decoding supported media, GStreamer documents elements such as decodebin and uridecodebin3. YouTube’s ingest guidance supplies the output targets; your pipeline must connect compatible encoded audio and video streams to the muxer before sending them to the sink. Use gst-inspect-1.0 to verify elements and caps rather than assuming an example will work on every Noble installation.
GStreamer says, “Please note that gst-launch-1.0 is primarily a debugging tool.” Its documentation recommends application code for applications. A production setup that needs controlled EOS handling, error recovery and secret management is better implemented as an application using GStreamer APIs; gst_parse_launch() can construct a pipeline from a description. Choose resolution, bitrate and keyframe settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265 and AV1, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). The following H.264 examples are YouTube’s current recommended and minimum bitrates, not independent performance measurements:

These values come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. Match the selected resolution and frame rate to the source and your encoder capacity; choose a bitrate your sustained upload can carry with headroom. A higher setting is not automatically safer or more watchable if the connection cannot sustain it.

- Set video to CBR.
- Set keyframes for the recommended two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
- Test with representative motion and audio, then watch Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check its current encoder page before publication because ingest guidance and interface labels can change.

A normal finite media source reaches EOS when playback ends. Neither rtmpsink nor a documented gst-launch-1.0 --loop option turns that file into an endless broadcast. The official gst-launch options do not list such a switch, and the reviewed GStreamer documentation does not provide a general one-command loop that works for arbitrary decoded files while preserving one YouTube ingest session.
For a continuous stream, use an application or controller that detects source EOS and seeks or restarts the source while retaining or deliberately managing the output pipeline. Test the loop boundary with the exact file and pipeline: whether a file seeks cleanly depends on its format and pipeline, and a restart can introduce a pause or discontinuity. A sequence of files can likewise be scheduled by application logic, but seamless, gap-free transitions are not guaranteed by a universal built-in playlist command.
Do not assume that restarting the whole pipeline will maintain one uninterrupted YouTube session. Decide how your application handles EOS, encoder and mux state, sink errors and reconnects, then validate that behavior in a test broadcast before relying on it.

Test the stream and troubleshoot failures

When HLS is a different design, not a sink swap
YouTube documents HLS as an alternative for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It requires MPEG-TS segments, 1–4 second segment duration, HTTPS POST/PUT requests and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. This is a segmented HTTP output design, not a drop-in replacement for rtmpsink. See YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion.
