If a video-file source appears black in XSplit Broadcaster, open Tools > Settings > Advanced and change Prefer CPU for video processing to Prefer GPU for video processing. If the source is still black, uncheck Use Media Foundation Engine for video playback, if that option is available. XSplit documents this as a source-display troubleshooting sequence; it does not guarantee a fix for every file or computer.
Try XSplit’s two documented settings
- Switch video processing to GPU. In XSplit Broadcaster, go to Tools > Settings > Advanced and select Prefer GPU for video processing. XSplit lists this as its first step for sources that display black. See XSplit’s black-source troubleshooting guidance.
- If the source remains black, turn off the Media Foundation playback engine. In the same Advanced settings area, uncheck Use Media Foundation Engine for video playback, if shown. XSplit says this option is available only when video processing is set to Prefer GPU.
- Check the source in the scene again. Confirm whether the video appears in Broadcaster before starting or evaluating the YouTube stream. XSplit sets up sources and streaming output as separate parts of the workflow.
The settings guide describes Prefer GPU as using GPU functions for accelerated decoding and other processing. Prefer CPU can reduce GPU load when playing PC games on the same hardware, so changing the mode may shift resource use; it is not a guaranteed performance improvement for every setup. The Media Foundation option enables Microsoft’s MF engine for supported MP4, WMV, AVI, and ASF playback and enables DXVA2 hardware acceleration. Details are in XSplit’s settings guide.
Confirm you have a video-file source
In the relevant scene, use Add Source > Video File to add the clip. Right-click the source to access its properties and playback controls. XSplit’s source documentation names formats including PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP, TIFF, MP4, FLV, WEBM, and MP3; that list is not a guarantee that every encoding within those file types will play. A filename extension alone does not identify why a source is black. See Image, Video, and Audio Source and Sources Menu – Introduction.
Determine whether the problem is the source or the stream
Look at the video-file source in the Broadcaster scene before attributing a black image in the delivered stream to YouTube. If it is black in the scene preview, the issue is already present before the streaming output. If it looks correct in the scene but viewers see black, note that distinction when troubleshooting: XSplit’s black-source article addresses source display settings and does not specifically diagnose YouTube delivery.

XSplit’s getting-started workflow treats source setup separately from selecting a streaming channel and starting the stream. For that workflow, see Getting Started with XSplit Broadcaster.
