You can build a Raspberry Pi 5 system that repeatedly plays a prerecorded video into YouTube Live with GStreamer, but the loop and the RTMPS output are separate jobs: an application must handle the file’s end-of-stream event while a persistent output pipeline encodes, muxes and sends the stream. Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 5 example is for camera streaming, not a tested file-to-YouTube loop, so treat the design below as a build plan and validate it with a private or unlisted broadcast before relying on it.

How the stream is assembled

The media path is: read a local file, demux and decode its supported tracks, convert or scale video if needed, encode H.264 and audio if present, mux the result into FLV, then send it to YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingest endpoint. GStreamer’s rtmpsink uses librtmp and expects FLV on its sink pad; its documented example includes an encoder, flvmux and the sink. Check that the RTMP plugin is installed locally before building the output pipeline (GStreamer rtmpsink documentation).

This is a component-level design, not a validated, copy-and-paste command. The exact pipeline depends on the file’s codecs, whether it contains audio, installed plugins and how the application handles end of stream. YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the ingest details for the broadcast. Keep the stream key private: do not put it in a public script, log, screenshot or shared example.

Choose the loop method before building output

A file reaching its end does not automatically mean it starts again. GStreamer exposes end-of-stream (EOS) handling to an application, which can reset playback and start the URI again. A second documented route is GstPlay’s track-loop mode, GST_PLAY_LOOP_TRACK, available since GStreamer 1.28. Check the installed version and API availability before choosing it (GStreamer playbin documentation; GStreamer GstPlay documentation).

Approach What it does What to verify
Application using playbin EOS notifications The application receives EOS, resets playback to READY or NULL, then starts the file again. Implement and test restart and error handling. Keep the RTMPS output alive separately if you want to avoid disconnecting YouTube at each repeat; gapless playback is not established by the documentation.
GstPlay track-loop mode Uses GST_PLAY_LOOP_TRACK to loop the current track; documented since GStreamer 1.28. Confirm the installed GStreamer version and API support, then test transition behavior with the complete output path.

Do not assume that gst-launch-1.0 playbin provides a loop flag: the cited GStreamer documentation describes application-level EOS handling and the GstPlay API, not a bare launch-command loop. Resetting an entire output pipeline at each EOS could interrupt the live ingest; keeping playback restart separate from the encoder, mux and sink is a sensible design goal, but the actual continuity must be tested.

Pi 5 encoder guidance and its limits

Raspberry Pi’s official camera-streaming example substitutes x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1 on Raspberry Pi 5 for the earlier-device v4l2h264enc example. That is camera-streaming guidance, not a benchmark or a universal optimum for transcoding files. Raspberry Pi separately recommends avdec_h264 instead of v4l2h264dec in a Pi 5 playback example. These are useful clues for platform-specific pipeline construction, but they do not establish CPU load, supported real-time resolution or frame rate for your file workload (Raspberry Pi documentation: Streaming).

Start with a conservative resolution and frame rate, then test the exact file and pipeline on the Pi. Do not infer that 1080p60 or unattended operation will work simply because a camera example exists; no Pi 5 measurements for this file-transcoding setup are established here.

Set YouTube ingest parameters

YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward Pi build, H.264 is the documented practical route. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Its guidance says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

H.264 bitrate examples

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not performance guarantees for the Raspberry Pi 5.

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
720p30 3 Mbps recommended
720p60 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p30 5 Mbps recommended
1080p60 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended

For audio, YouTube recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. It lists 5.1 audio at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. If the source has no audio, do not add an audio branch merely to match an example.

Build and validate in stages

  1. Inspect the file and installed GStreamer components. Identify its video and audio tracks, codecs, resolution and frame rate. Confirm the required demuxers, decoders, converters, H.264 and audio encoders, FLV muxer and RTMP sink are available. The rtmpsink element is part of the Bad Plug-ins package; plugin availability can vary by installation.
  2. Choose the loop implementation. Use an application that handles playbin EOS and restarts the URI, or use GstPlay track-loop mode if the installed version supports it. Do not assume a launch-only loop option that the documentation does not describe.
  3. Assemble the output path. Connect decoded media to the needed conversion and encoding elements, then route encoded tracks through flvmux into rtmpsink. Configure H.264 with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and set the intended video and audio rates. Treat this as a design checklist rather than a universal command: actual element properties and links depend on the installed plugins and source tracks.
  4. Use YouTube’s ingest details privately. In Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast and configure the sink for RTMPS where available. Do not expose the key while debugging or sharing configuration.
  5. Test an unlisted or private stream with the real file. Confirm that YouTube receives video and audio, that the Pi can sustain the chosen encode settings, and that EOS causes playback to restart without ending the outgoing stream. Check the loop transition for a gap or discontinuity; its behavior is implementation-specific.
  6. Run a representative connection and content test. YouTube recommends checking upload speed, choosing a quality reliable for the available connection, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health during the event. Recheck after changing resolution, frame rate or bitrate.

Troubleshooting likely failures

  • No RTMP sink or plugin error: verify that the GStreamer RTMP plugin, included in Bad Plug-ins, is installed and discoverable in the environment running the application.
  • YouTube rejects or does not receive the stream: check the RTMPS server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm that the mux output is FLV, and confirm the configured codec, bitrate and keyframe interval match YouTube’s published ingest guidance.
  • The stream ends when the file ends: the application may not be handling EOS, or it may be tearing down the whole pipeline. Add or correct application-level restart logic and test whether the outgoing RTMPS branch remains connected during playback reset.
  • Video or audio is missing: inspect the source tracks and ensure each supported track has the required demux, decode, encode and mux path. Audio is optional when the file has none; when present, use an audio codec accepted by YouTube.
  • Pauses, dropped frames or unstable output: lower the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again. Check both Pi encoding capacity and stable upload capacity; YouTube’s recommended bitrates do not guarantee that this Pi workload can sustain them.
  • Loop behavior differs from expectations: verify the installed GStreamer version if using GstPlay track-loop mode, and test the EOS transition in the complete application. The cited API descriptions do not promise a gapless repeat.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep prerecorded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a Pi and GStreamer application: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube prerecorded-video streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or its pricing page, then start the free day.
