Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2, Episode 3, “001.” Gi-hun returns to the games and tries to steer the players toward survival, but the familiar Red Light, Green Light round puts them back under the organizers’ control. The episode’s twist turns on the identity behind Player 001, and its first-round survivors must then decide whether the game continues.
What happens in Squid Game Season 2, Episode 3?
“001,” released December 26, 2024, is directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Netflix’s episode companion frames the chapter around Gi-hun’s return, a Red Light, Green Light redux, and the reveal of Player 001’s identity.
Gi-hun has come back to the competition with experience the other players do not have. He tries to lead them toward safety, setting up the episode’s central conflict: his effort to influence what happens inside a system whose organizers still control the game. The return of Red Light, Green Light makes that conflict immediate, turning the first round into a test of survival.
Who is Player 001, and what is the episode’s twist?
The episode reveals the identity behind Player 001, making the public player number and the person concealed by it the chapter’s central mystery. Netflix’s companion identifies the reveal as a major beat but does not name the character, so this recap does not supply a name that the cited episode guide does not verify.

What happens after the first game?
The survivors face a vote on whether the competition should continue. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing describes the survivors’ fate as hanging on that final vote. The first round therefore ends not with a settled outcome, but with the players confronting whether to remain in the life-or-death contest.
Why the episode’s conflict matters
The episode places Gi-hun’s attempt to protect other players against the organizers’ power to dictate the conditions. His return gives him knowledge of the danger, but knowledge alone does not mean he can change the rules or persuade everyone to follow his lead. Netflix’s season guide describes his return as driven by a new resolution after he gave up going to the United States following his win. The story’s fictional prize is 45.6 billion won.
