A video file reaching its end normally sends an end-of-stream (EOS) event; by itself, that is not evidence of a caps-negotiation failure. If the YouTube broadcast should continue, your application must provide more input—such as the next file or another looped copy—and must not signal EOS to the pipeline or appsrc at the end of each file. Investigate caps separately by comparing the formats at the file boundary and checking the bus for actual errors.
First identify what “freezes” means
A finite file has a last buffer. When the source or application reports EOS, GStreamer propagates that end-of-stream condition through the pipeline. If no further media is supplied, the live output has nothing more to encode. The GStreamer design overview describes EOS propagation and the pipeline EOS message.
A caps-negotiation error is a different condition: elements cannot agree on the format of buffers flowing between them. A freeze noticed at the same time as a file ends does not prove that negotiation failed. Check the bus messages and debug output to distinguish a clean EOS from an error.
Diagnose the file boundary
-
Capture the pipeline’s bus messages
Record messages immediately before and after the final frame. Determine whether the pipeline posts EOS, reports an error, or continues running without producing buffers. Preserve the full error text; a player symptom alone is not enough to identify the failing element.

Check who sends EOS
If the application uses
appsrc, search for calls togst_app_src_end_of_stream()and the equivalent end-of-stream action signal. The GstAppSrc documentation says the application should call it when it has finished pushing data. If each file is only one item in a continuing broadcast, sending EOS after that item ends tells downstream elements that the input is complete. -
Log caps on both sides of the transition
Inspect the caps on the outgoing buffers near the end of the current file and at the start of the next one. Check at the source and immediately before the encoder or muxer. If the next file differs in pixel format, dimensions, or frame rate, confirm that downstream elements can accept the change and that negotiation succeeds.

Record the details needed for a code-level fix
Keep the complete pipeline description, installed GStreamer version, bus messages around the boundary, and caps before and after it. Without these, it is not possible to tell whether the pipeline ends cleanly, appsrc sends EOS too early, or a particular format transition fails.
Keep appsrc input and caps consistent
When setting the caps property on appsrc, use fixed caps that describe the buffers the application actually pushes. The buffers must match those caps, or the caps should be left unset when the application is not using the property. A mismatch between declared caps and buffer content is a real format problem, but it is separate from the normal fact that a file has a final buffer.

After appsrc has sent EOS, it cannot accept more buffers until a flushing seek or a transition through READY. Do not try to append the next file to that same appsrc as if it had never ended. Design the handoff so the intended next input is supplied before the stream is declared complete, or use the documented reset path where appropriate. The right design depends on whether playback should loop, advance to another item, hold, or stop.
Stabilize formats when files differ
Caps negotiation can fail when a pipeline’s topology or media format changes. GStreamer’s pipeline manipulation documentation explains renegotiation and notes that suitable converter elements are a common way to address incompatible formats.

- Compare the actual caps at the end of one file and the beginning of the next.
- If the raw video formats differ, consider appropriate conversion, scaling, or frame-rate elements before the encoder.
- Use a capsfilter only to establish a downstream format that is supported by the source path and the encoder; choose its concrete caps from observed input and element requirements, not by guesswork.
- Repeat the boundary test and verify both the bus messages and negotiated caps. A converter cannot fix premature EOS, and suppressing EOS cannot make incompatible caps compatible.
The GStreamer streaming tutorial is also useful background on streaming behavior. None of these general rules determines the exact element arrangement for an unspecified pipeline.

| What should happen after the file ends? | What to implement or verify |
|---|---|
| Stop the broadcast | Allow input completion and EOS to propagate; confirm the pipeline’s EOS message rather than treating a normal end as a caps failure. |
| Play the same recording again | Arrange another pass of the media before declaring the continuing input complete. If appsrc has already sent EOS, it needs the documented reset path before it can accept more buffers. |
| Advance to another recording | Arrange the next intended input and check caps at the transition. Normalize incompatible raw formats where needed. |
| Keep the broadcast open without another file | Define what media or continuing source should supply buffers; an ended finite file alone cannot keep producing video. |
Common failure patterns
- The stream ends cleanly at every file boundary: look for EOS from the file source or an appsrc end-of-stream call. If the broadcast is meant to continue, arrange the next input rather than treating clean EOS as a caps error.
- The next file starts but an error appears: compare negotiated caps on both sides of the switch. A format change may need conversion or a stable downstream format.
- The application pushes after appsrc has ended: appsrc does not resume accepting buffers automatically after EOS. Use a flushing seek or READY transition as appropriate to the pipeline’s design.
- The output stalls without an EOS or clear error: collect the pipeline description, GStreamer version, bus/debug output, and boundary caps. The symptom alone does not establish whether the cause is upstream input, negotiation, or another part of the pipeline.
