When a GStreamer-to-YouTube stream reports timestamp errors at a file-loop boundary, first check the timestamps and active segment at the muxer input. A loop changes stream state as well as media time: restarting a file can reset its timestamps, while a segment seek requires the pipeline to handle SEGMENT_DONE and establish the next segment correctly. There is no universal timestamp offset that safely fixes every pipeline.
Start by identifying the exact failure
“Timestamp error” can describe different problems: a decoder rejecting a timestamp, a muxer reporting non-monotonic DTS, audio and video drifting apart, or YouTube reporting a stream-health issue. The fix depends on which component reports it and which timestamp it names.
Before changing the pipeline, record:
- The complete warning or error line and the element that prints it.
- The GStreamer version and full pipeline string or graph.
- The file container and audio/video codecs.
- How the loop is implemented: segment seek, EOS callback, source restart,
multifilesrc, concatenation, or pipeline restart. - Whether the failure occurs locally at a decoder, parser, or muxer, or only appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
Those details distinguish a local timeline problem from an ingest configuration or stream-health problem. Without them, an exact code-level fix cannot be inferred.
Understand the timestamps before changing them
PTS and DTS are not interchangeable
Presentation timestamp (PTS) indicates when a buffer should be presented; decoding timestamp (DTS) indicates when it should be decoded or processed. They may differ, especially in compressed video with frame reordering. GStreamer describes DTS as usually monotonic, but PTS is not necessarily monotonic in every stream. Diagnose the exact warning and timestamp it refers to; a PTS sequence that does not increase on every buffer is not, by itself, proof of corruption. See the GstBuffer reference.

Compare running time, not just raw timestamp values
GStreamer maps buffer timestamps to running time using the active SEGMENT event. A raw timestamp reset or jump at a loop boundary does not, on its own, show whether the output timeline is continuous or correctly synchronized. Inspect the segment fields along with PTS, DTS, and duration for audio and video. The GStreamer segments design explains the timestamp-to-running-time mapping.
Check for unknown timestamps and real regressions
Look for GST_CLOCK_TIME_NONE, repeated timestamps, a reset to zero, a large gap, or a DTS value that actually moves backward where the downstream element requires ordered decode times. Compare values at the demuxer or decoder output and again at the muxer input if possible. That shows whether the problem originates in the file or appears later in the pipeline.

Choose a loop model that matches the pipeline
Continuous pipeline with a segment seek
For a pipeline that should remain alive, GStreamer supports segment seeking. A segment seek marks completion with SEGMENT_DONE; the application can then issue the next seek. This is distinct from treating the pass as ordinary EOS. The GStreamer seeking guide describes segment seeks and notes that accurate seeking in files without indexes may require scanning.
- Issue a seek using
GST_SEEK_FLAG_SEGMENTfor the desired playback range. - Handle
SEGMENT_DONEin the application and issue the next segment seek deliberately. - Confirm that audio and video participate coherently and that the demuxer, parser, decoder, and muxer handle the resulting events.
- Log the new segment fields and the first buffers after each seek; verify their running-time relationship to the preceding pass.
Source or pipeline restart
If the design restarts a file source or tears down and rebuilds the pipeline, inspect the event sequence and flush behavior as well as the timestamps. A common GStreamer stream lifecycle is STREAM_START, SEGMENT, buffers, then EOS; after EOS, no more data is expected for that stream. Restarting a source or pushing buffers after EOS therefore needs a valid new stream/segment state, not merely timestamps set back to zero. See the GStreamer streams design.

The surrounding pipeline must establish a valid output timeline if the muxer expects continuity. Which element should adjust timestamps, and whether adjustment is needed at all, depends on the pipeline and muxer requirements. Do not apply an arbitrary offset or force PTS equal to DTS without confirming the failure and the element’s expectations.
Use discontinuity flags only when they describe what happened
GST_BUFFER_FLAG_DISCONT marks a discontinuity, commonly after a seek or a dropped buffer. It can communicate a real stream event to downstream elements, but it does not repair invalid timestamps or replace a suitable SEGMENT. GStreamer’s buffer reference defines the flag; check how the elements downstream of the point where it is set handle it.

Validate YouTube settings after the local timeline
YouTube encoder settings are worth checking after the pipeline’s timestamps and events are coherent. They do not diagnose a GStreamer loop-boundary error. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio, with 5.1 audio supported only for AAC; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback to check ingest after local validation.
- Test with representative audio and video before starting a live stream, as YouTube advises in its encoder settings guidance.
- Do not treat a healthy encoder configuration as proof that timestamps are valid at the loop boundary.
Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | What to inspect next |
|---|---|
| Muxer reports non-monotonic DTS near the loop | Compare DTS at muxer input immediately before and after the boundary; check for a restart/reset and the active segment. |
| PTS changes unexpectedly but no element reports a PTS error | Account for reordered video and compare running time through the active segment before treating the sequence as invalid. |
| Audio and video drift after each pass | Log timestamps, duration, and segment fields for both streams at the boundary; verify that both streams use coherent seeks or restart state. |
| Buffers are rejected after seeking or dropping data | Check the new segment and whether a discontinuity is being signaled appropriately; the flag alone is not a timestamp fix. |
| YouTube reports stream-health trouble but local timestamps look coherent | Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and Live Control Room feedback separately from loop logic. |
