First validate how yt-dlp extracts the playlist and passes each video to the playback or processing command; then configure a service wrapper to launch that command unattended. FFmpeg handles media, yt-dlp handles YouTube extraction, and a wrapper such as WinSW or NSSM hosts the process as a Windows service.
Understand the three parts before configuring a service
- yt-dlp selects and extracts media from the YouTube playlist. Its documentation covers playlist selection, output templates, and handing output to another process when that process can read standard input (yt-dlp README; yt-dlp FAQ).
- FFmpeg processes media supplied as an input. It accepts inputs using
-iand supports many input types, including network streams, but that does not make a playlist webpage URL a direct media stream (FFmpeg command-line documentation). - A Windows service wrapper launches and manages an ordinary executable under the service manager. It does not extract the playlist or make an unsupported yt-dlp-to-FFmpeg handoff work.
The exact end-to-end yt-dlp, FFmpeg, and Windows service command depends on the desired handoff and local setup. The commands and configuration below are a framework to validate on your machine, not a guaranteed universal recipe.
Validate playlist extraction and media handoff interactively
- Install and locate the tools. Identify the full paths to
yt-dlp.exeandffmpeg.exe, and make sure the account that will run the service can access them. Use absolute paths in later configuration. - Test playlist selection with yt-dlp. Use its documented playlist-selection options to choose the entries you intend to process. Confirm the result in an interactive terminal before adding a service wrapper; playlist availability and extraction behavior can change (yt-dlp README; yt-dlp FAQ).
- Choose a handoff the downstream process supports. yt-dlp’s FAQ demonstrates piping to a player that reads standard input. That does not establish that every FFmpeg operation can consume that output in the same way. Match the handoff to the intended processing operation, then test the complete command manually.
- Test FFmpeg separately with the resulting input. FFmpeg’s
-ioption specifies an input, but use an input form that your validated extraction workflow actually supplies. Do not assume the playlist webpage URL is suitable. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation. - Make the FFmpeg process noninteractive. Include
-nostdinin the FFmpeg invocation. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends this for background operation because FFmpeg otherwise checks console input; redirecting standard input toNULon Windows is an alternative. This option prevents console-input checks; it does not install or supervise a service (FFmpeg FAQ).
Do not proceed until the exact command works from a terminal under the intended account and with the intended working directory. The yt-dlp FAQ’s pipe example is for a player able to consume stdin; it is not confirmation of a particular FFmpeg command.
Choose a Windows service wrapper
Both WinSW and NSSM can launch an executable as a Windows service. Choose one, configure the executable and its arguments explicitly, and test the wrapper’s lifecycle commands rather than installing both for the same process.

Configure the command as a WinSW service
WinSW uses an XML file to specify the program the service launches. The example below is a configuration outline, not a ready-to-run yt-dlp-to-FFmpeg pipeline: replace the executable and arguments with the exact command you already validated. Consult the WinSW XML configuration documentation for the supported schema and options.
- Place the wrapper and configuration together. Follow WinSW’s v3 installation and naming guidance for the wrapper executable and its XML configuration (WinSW documentation).
- Set the executable and arguments. Point the service at the program that starts your validated workflow. If that requires a launcher script to coordinate yt-dlp and FFmpeg, configure the script or its interpreter and arguments explicitly. Do not assume that a playlist URL alone provides the required input.
- Set a working directory and account intentionally. WinSW’s documented default working directory is the configuration directory and its default account is LocalSystem. Use an explicit working directory where needed, and verify that the chosen service account can access executables, files, and network resources (WinSW XML configuration).
- Install and manage the service. Use the install, start, stop, restart, and status commands documented for your WinSW v3 release. Check the reported service state and the wrapper’s logs after starting (WinSW CLI commands).
Configure the command as an NSSM service
- Open NSSM’s service installation configuration. Specify the full application path; NSSM requires it.
- Enter the validated arguments. Preserve argument quoting and include the noninteractive FFmpeg option where FFmpeg is launched. The arguments must match the working command you tested, not a guessed playlist-to-FFmpeg shortcut.
- Set the startup directory. Point it to the directory your command expects. The service may not inherit the working directory or environment of the shell used during setup.
- Install and start the service, then verify it. Use NSSM’s documented service setup and management approach. Confirm the service runs under the intended account and inspect its behavior and available logs (NSSM usage documentation).
Account for YouTube access, copyright, and channel rules
A service wrapper only keeps a configured process running; it does not grant access to a playlist, prevent extraction changes, or establish that you have rights to rebroadcast its contents. Use media you are authorized to process and stream, and check YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before using playlist material on a channel. Playlist extraction and access can change, so a command that worked during setup may need to be tested and maintained later (yt-dlp FAQ).

Troubleshoot a service that will not run as expected
- It works in a terminal but fails as a service: the service account or environment may differ. Reproduce the command under the same account and working directory configured for the service, and confirm that account can access every executable, file, and network resource it needs.
- The service starts but cannot find a program or file: replace relative paths with absolute paths and set the startup or working directory explicitly.
- FFmpeg waits for input or behaves interactively: add
-nostdinto the FFmpeg invocation for background operation, or use Windows stdin redirection toNULas described by the FFmpeg FAQ. - The playlist extraction or handoff fails: run the exact yt-dlp and downstream command interactively first. Confirm playlist selection and that the receiving process supports the chosen handoff; the yt-dlp FAQ’s stdin example is for a compatible player, not proof that a specific FFmpeg workflow will work.
- The service stops or reports an error: check the wrapper’s logs and Windows Event Log where available, then verify the configured executable, arguments, account, and working directory. A service wrapper can manage process lifecycle, but its documentation does not promise uninterrupted playback.
