First, distinguish three different jobs: adding a WebVTT subtitle rendition to an FFmpeg-generated HLS playlist, showing captions during a YouTube Live broadcast, and adding subtitles to the replay. They use different workflows. FFmpeg documents how to create the HLS rendition, but the cited YouTube documentation does not establish that YouTube Live will display that rendition as live captions.
Choose the subtitle workflow you need
| Goal | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Include a separate text subtitle track in an HLS output you control | FFmpeg HLS subtitle rendition | Creates a WebVTT rendition and associates it with a subtitle group in the HLS master playlist. This alone is not confirmed as a YouTube Live caption feed. |
| Show captions during YouTube Live | YouTube’s embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions or supported caption software sending captions over HTTP | Delivers captions through a live-caption method documented by YouTube. |
| Add subtitles to the uploaded video or replay | YouTube Studio subtitle workflow | Uploads a supported subtitle or caption file, such as SRT or WebVTT. |
The distinction matters: a subtitle track in an HLS playlist and a live caption feed are separate mechanisms. Do not assume YouTube accepts one in place of the other; confirm compatibility for your exact encoder and ingest setup before relying on it.
Create a WebVTT rendition in an FFmpeg HLS playlist
Use this path when you control the HLS output and want a separate subtitle rendition in its playlist. The input must contain a text subtitle stream, and your output mapping and variant stream map must include it.
- Check the input. Identify the video, audio, and text subtitle streams in the source file. If there is no suitable text subtitle stream, prepare one in a supported input format before building the HLS output.
- Map the streams. In the FFmpeg command, select the video, audio, and subtitle streams for the output. The FFmpeg HLS documentation’s example maps those streams and uses
-c:s webvttfor the subtitle encoder. - Declare the subtitle group. Set the subtitle group, name, and language metadata in
-var_stream_map, alongside the relevant video and audio variants, so the master playlist associates the WebVTT rendition correctly. - Inspect the generated playlists. Confirm that the output includes a subtitle playlist and that the master playlist references it in the intended subtitle group. Test playback in a client that supports the HLS output and verify the language and timing.
See FFmpeg’s HLS muxer documentation for its subtitle rendition example and full documentation for stream mapping and muxer options. Those examples demonstrate HLS playlist authoring; they are not a tested command for every input, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account.

Show captions during YouTube Live
YouTube documents two live-caption routes: captions embedded in the video using EIA-608/CEA-708, or captions sent by supported software to a signed HTTP ingestion URL. Its guidance states, “The captions can either be embedded in the video or sent through supported software that can send captions over HTTP POSTs.”

Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
- In the live setup, enable Closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to provide EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the video stream.
- Check the live preview and broadcast to verify that captions appear as intended.
Although the standards support up to four language tracks, YouTube’s current documentation says it supports one embedded caption track. If you need multiple languages, do not assume multiple embedded tracks will be available on YouTube.
HTTP caption feed
- Enable captions in the live setup and copy the event’s Captions Ingestion URL.
- Configure supported caption software to send the caption feed to that signed URL using the documented workflow.
- Check that the feed is connected to the correct stream entry point and confirm captions in the live preview.
YouTube names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as software options in its live caption requirements. That documentation says each stream entry point has one caption feed; it does not establish current product availability or endorse a purchase for an FFmpeg-only workflow.

A standalone WebVTT rendition in an FFmpeg HLS master playlist is not the same thing as this HTTP caption feed. The cited documentation does not confirm that YouTube Live will treat the rendition as broadcast captions.
If your live video is sent to YouTube over HLS
YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements concern the live video transport, not the separate HTTP caption-feed workflow. Choose HLS as the stream protocol in Live Control Room and use the HTTPS ingestion URL generated for the event. YouTube specifies:

- Transport Stream (TS) segments.
- Segment durations of one to four seconds.
- A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- No byte ranges.
- HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments. These requirements do not establish that a WebVTT subtitle rendition will be recognized as live captions. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions for the ingest workflow.

Troubleshoot missing or unusable captions
- The HLS player has no subtitle option: Check that the input had a text subtitle stream, that it was mapped, that the subtitle encoder is WebVTT, and that the variant stream map declares the subtitle group and metadata. Confirm the generated master playlist references the rendition.
- The HLS subtitles work in a player but not on YouTube Live: This does not by itself indicate a broken WebVTT rendition. YouTube’s documented live-caption routes are embedded 608/708 or a supported HTTP caption feed; direct acceptance of an FFmpeg HLS subtitle rendition is not established in the cited guidance.
- Embedded captions do not appear: Check that Closed captions and Embedded 608/708 are selected in the live setup and that the encoder is configured to send EIA-608/CEA-708 data.
- The HTTP caption feed does not connect: Verify that the caption software uses the signed Captions Ingestion URL for the correct event and stream entry point, and that the feed is configured in the supported software.
- HLS ingest fails or lags: Recheck TS segment format, one-to-four-second segment duration, rolling playlist limit, byte-range use, and HTTPS POST/PUT behavior. Account for HLS’s segment-related higher latency compared with RTMP.
- Options in an example are unavailable: Compare the command with the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version; the online pages track the newest revision.
