A CNAME record alone will not make a custom address open a YouTube Live watch page. A CNAME is a DNS alias; to send viewers from an address such as live.example.com to a YouTube event, configure a separate HTTP redirect with your DNS or web provider. Keep that viewer-facing address separate from the Stream URL and stream key your encoder uses.
First, identify which YouTube address you want to customize
This guide covers a branded address that opens a particular Live event’s watch page. It does not create a custom URL for your YouTube channel, nor does it change the address where your encoder sends video.
- Viewer address: a custom hostname such as
live.example.comthat redirects a browser to the event’s YouTube watch page. - Encoder destination: YouTube’s Stream URL and stream key, copied from Live Control Room and entered in your encoder. These are not replaced by your domain.
- Channel address: a YouTube handle URL is different from a domain you control. YouTube says new custom channel URLs can no longer be set up and existing custom URLs can no longer be changed. Handle URLs are generated when a channel owner chooses or changes a handle. YouTube Help: Custom URL overview
Use a branded redirect when you want to share a shorter, memorable link to one event. Create or schedule that event first so you have its watch-page URL.
How the CNAME and redirect work together
A CNAME record maps one hostname to another hostname. It does not point to a URL path, host a page, carry video, or tell a browser to open a different URL. The browser redirect is a separate HTTP behavior configured through a provider’s forwarding or redirect feature. Cloudflare documents one approach using a proxied DNS record and a Redirect Rule; its configuration is an example, not a universal CNAME target. Set up a branded address for a Live event
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, set up the Live stream and copy its viewer-facing watch-page URL. Confirm the event’s visibility and access settings match your intent.
- Choose a hostname. A dedicated subdomain such as
live.example.comis usually easier to configure without disturbing an existing website or email setup than the root domain,example.com. Provider capabilities and existing DNS records matter. - Configure DNS at your provider. In the domain’s DNS or redirect dashboard, add the record the provider requires for that hostname. If the provider’s instructions call for a CNAME, its destination field takes a hostname only—not
https://or a URL path. Ensure the request is routed through a service capable of handling web traffic and the redirect. - Add an HTTP redirect. Configure the provider’s forwarding, URL redirect, or redirect rule to send the custom hostname to the exact YouTube watch-page URL. Choose whether to preserve path and query string deliberately; for a single event, the destination should be the intended watch page, not an assumed generic YouTube URL.
- Test the link. Open the custom address in a browser, including over HTTPS, and confirm that it lands on the right event. Check that viewers can access the event as intended. DNS propagation and cache timing vary, so a fixed wait time cannot be guaranteed.
Cloudflare as one provider-specific example
Cloudflare’s documented domain redirect setup uses a DNS record that resolves through its proxy and a Redirect Rule. Follow Cloudflare’s current instructions for the record, proxy state, and rule configuration rather than copying a CNAME target from another provider or assuming that every DNS dashboard uses the same labels. Using the root domain instead
If you want example.com rather than a subdomain, check whether your provider supports redirects at the DNS zone apex. Apex handling differs by provider. Cloudflare documents CNAME flattening for its apex configuration, but that does not mean every provider permits a root CNAME. Review existing records before changing anything. Keep the encoder pointed at YouTube
The custom domain is for viewers’ browsers; it does not relay the stream or alter ingest. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the Stream URL and stream key and enter those values in the encoder. YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled for the channel. If using RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room and an RTMPS-compatible encoder. Do not share screenshots or instructions that expose the stream key. It is an encoder credential, not part of the public redirect. If video does not reach YouTube, troubleshoot the Stream URL, key, protocol, and encoder separately from the custom domain.

Choose a redirect setup that fits your domain

Troubleshooting
- The custom address shows an error or does not redirect. Verify the DNS record target is a hostname, the provider’s proxy or forwarding requirements are met, and a redirect rule exists for the correct hostname.
- The browser warns about HTTPS. DNS does not provide a certificate or redirect by itself. Confirm the redirect service supports HTTPS and covers the custom hostname.
- The record cannot be saved or conflicts with another record. A CNAME generally cannot share its hostname with A, AAAA, or other record types. Check for an existing conflicting record and do not overwrite records used by your website or email. Cloudflare: CNAME domain conflicts
- The root domain will not accept a CNAME. Apex rules vary. Use your provider’s supported apex or forwarding method rather than assuming a subdomain recipe applies.
- The link reaches the wrong video or a generic YouTube page. Check the redirect destination character by character against the event’s watch-page URL, then test again in a browser.
- The redirect works, but the stream is offline. The redirect only opens the watch page. Check the event status and separately verify the encoder’s YouTube Stream URL, stream key, protocol, and live-stream eligibility.
