A low-end PC may handle a nonstop YouTube stream if you reduce its video workload, choose an encoder that suits its hardware, and test the full setup before relying on it. Start at 720p and 30 fps if the computer or connection struggles, then adjust based on Streamlabs’ resource use and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. This can improve the odds of a stable stream, but no settings guarantee that an older computer will run indefinitely.
First decide whether you are streaming live camera or gameplay, or looping prerecorded video. Streamlabs Desktop is the desktop-production path for a live show. If the content is prerecorded, a cloud service may keep the loop running without a dedicated PC; the cloud option is covered after the setup steps.
Check whether your PC is a realistic fit
Before changing settings, note your operating system, RAM, CPU, graphics hardware, stream content and other programs you need to run. Streamlabs’ published minimum requirements are a compatibility floor, not a promise of nonstop performance. Its official pages also conflict on the minimum Windows version: the system-requirements page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and 8 GB of RAM, while its July 2026 getting-started guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 and integrated graphics as minimum. Check the current installer and documentation for your operating system before installing or upgrading.
The system-requirements page recommends 16 GB or more of RAM, a 512 GB SSD or larger, an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or higher or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, and NVIDIA RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series graphics. Those are vendor recommendations, not a required shopping list for every stream. Content complexity and other running applications can change what a PC can manage. See Streamlabs Desktop System Requirements and Getting Started with Streamlabs Desktop.

Reduce the video workload in Streamlabs
Lower output resolution and frame rate
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Video.
- Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at your monitor’s native resolution, then set Output (Scaled) Resolution to a lower stream target. Streamlabs identifies 720p as a useful balance in its guide and notes that a 1080p output can put more load on the system than 720p.
- If the PC or connection cannot sustain the target, test 30 fps rather than 60 fps. Choose the highest resolution and frame rate that remain stable in a representative test, not simply the largest available values.
Lower output reduces the amount of video work and can also make it easier to fit the stream within available upload bandwidth. The trade-off is less detail or motion smoothness for viewers. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations differ by resolution and frame rate, so set bitrate only after choosing the output.
Choose an encoder according to the bottleneck
Streamlabs’ x264 software encoder uses the CPU. NVENC uses a dedicated NVIDIA GPU encoder, and Streamlabs recommends NVENC New when an NVIDIA graphics card is available. That is a starting point, not a universal fix: if the GPU is already overloaded, moving encoding work to it may not help. Test the available encoder options while watching both CPU and GPU load; keep the option that behaves better during your actual show.

Simplify scenes and close unnecessary applications
Animated overlays, advanced plugins, multiple sources and other running programs can add work. Remove scene elements you do not need, simplify animations, and close applications that are not required for the stream. Make one change at a time and observe whether it changes resource use or stream health on your PC; the benefit depends on the machine and workload.
Set YouTube bitrate and keyframes
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended video bitrates are:

| Output | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not a target to force regardless of your connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval. Its table also includes minimums and other codec settings, which may change; check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions when configuring the encoder.
In Streamlabs’ streaming output settings, choose a bitrate appropriate to the output and your stable upload capacity, then use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. A bitrate that exceeds the connection’s capacity can make the stream unstable even if the PC encodes it successfully.

Test upload capacity and connection stability
Measure upload speed rather than relying on download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused for headroom and warns that a shared high-speed connection can still limit the bandwidth available to an individual stream. If your measured upload is marginal or varies, lower the bitrate or output rather than planning around a best-case result. Its advice is in YouTube’s streaming tips.
Use wired Ethernet when practical, especially if Wi-Fi is unreliable. Streamlabs recommends Ethernet, but a cable addresses the local wireless link; it does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet plan or reduce the PC’s encoding workload.

Run a complete test before going public
- Use the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, audio, motion and overlays planned for the real stream. Include the other applications and tasks that will normally run at the same time.
- Watch Streamlabs’ CPU and GPU use during the test, along with YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If frames are being skipped, reduce output or system load. If YouTube reports network issues, lower the bitrate or improve connection stability. Treat these as diagnostic starting points: the displayed status and logs determine the cause on a particular system.
- Check that audio and video are both present and behaving as intended. If you record a local archive, verify that the file is growing and that the recording can be played back.
- Run a representative long test before depending on the setup. Check that the PC will not sleep or lose power, keep its ventilation clear, and have a practical restart or recovery plan. These precautions reduce avoidable interruptions; they do not guarantee continuous uptime.
YouTube advises setting up at least two hours ahead, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event, checking the preview, confirming the stream is accessible and monitoring audio and video continuously. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to its encoder setup guidance. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot by separating PC load from network problems
- Streamlabs is struggling or frames are skipped: reduce the output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes and close unneeded applications. Compare CPU and GPU load before changing encoder settings; x264 uses CPU, while NVENC requires available NVIDIA GPU encoding capacity.
- YouTube reports network issues: compare the chosen bitrate with measured upload capacity, allow the recommended 20% headroom, and test wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable. Lower bitrate or output if the connection cannot sustain the settings.
- The stream is stable only when other programs are closed: reduce concurrent work and remove optional sources or effects. The cause may be a resource limit, but confirm it from resource use and stream health rather than assuming a hardware upgrade is necessary.
- The stream cannot be enabled in time: check whether live streaming is enabled for the channel early. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- A local recording is missing or incomplete: verify archive growth and playback during the test, and check local storage and recording settings before relying on it as a backup.
For prerecorded loops, consider a cloud stream
YouTube’s verified encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded video streams that does not need a dedicated PC. That is an option for looping prerecorded content, not a way to produce live camera or gameplay scenes in Streamlabs. The same list describes OBS Studio as free, open-source recording and streaming software; it does not establish that OBS will use fewer resources on your particular computer. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos, not live camera production, and streams to YouTube only.
