Your additional energy charge depends on the whole setup’s average power draw at the wall while streaming, the hours it runs, and the marginal rate charged by your electricity provider for your household’s usage. Measure your own setup and use the formulas below for a useful estimate.
Calculate your monthly electricity use and cost
First estimate the energy your setup uses, then apply the rate for the additional units on your bill:
- Energy (kWh) = average whole-system draw (W) Ă— streaming hours Ă· 1,000.
- Estimated additional energy charge (â‚ą) = energy (kWh) Ă— applicable marginal tariff (â‚ą/kWh).
For a 30-day month running continuously, there are 720 hours, so monthly energy is average watts Ă— 0.72 kWh. For example, if a setup averaged 100 W at the wall for all 720 hours, it would use 72 kWh. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a claim that a typical streaming PC draws 100 W.
For a different billing period or schedule, use the actual hours. For example, multiply by the number of hours you expect to stream rather than assuming a full 30 days.

Measure the complete setup while it is streaming
The useful input is the average wall-side power draw during the stream you intend to run—not the wattage printed on the computer’s power supply. Include the computer, monitor if it will stay on, and any streaming or capture equipment you want counted.
- Connect the equipment you plan to leave running to a suitably rated plug-in electricity usage monitor or kWh energy meter. Check that the monitor is appropriate for your outlet and the load.
- Run the intended Streamlabs Desktop scene and stream settings, including your usual overlays, browser sources, and other programs.
- Measure over a representative period of that workload. Use the monitor’s average watts if it provides one. If it reports accumulated kWh, divide that energy by the measurement hours and multiply by 1,000 to calculate average watts.
- Put that average into the monthly formula, using the number of hours you plan to stream in your billing period.
Trustworthy smart-meter or whole-home readings may also help you estimate the change, provided you can separate the streaming setup’s consumption from the rest of the household. Why Streamlabs does not have a fixed wattage
Streamlabs Desktop runs on your computer, so its power use varies with the system and the work being done. Streamlabs’ system requirements, settings guidance, and getting-started guidance explain that hardware, content, other programs, encoder choice, and output settings affect workload.
- Encoder: x264 uses the CPU for software encoding; hardware encoding such as NVENC uses GPU hardware. Their effect on your total draw depends on your particular system and scene.
- Output settings: Resolution and frame rate change the work required to produce the stream.
- Scene and background workload: Gaming, animated overlays, browser sources, background tasks, and other running software can add load.
- Equipment left on: A monitor or peripherals left running contribute to the setup’s total consumption.
These variables are why CPU or GPU model names alone cannot establish the monthly bill. For a fair comparison between two setups, measure average wall watts with the same scene and settings, count the same peripherals, use the same operating hours, and apply the same marginal tariff.

Use your current electricity tariff—not a national average
India does not have one current residential rupees-per-unit rate that applies to every household. Tariff orders vary by jurisdiction and utility. The Ministry of Power’s FY 2025–26 annual report describes tariff orders for named utilities and jurisdictions. A separate Ministry annex lists estimated state and utility tariffs for FY 2019–20; it is historical and should not be treated as a current rate for your home.
Check your latest bill or your distribution company’s current tariff schedule. For an incremental estimate, use the rate applicable to additional units at your household’s current consumption level, including relevant energy adjustments. If your usage crosses a slab, the extra units may not all be charged at one rate.

The formula estimates the additional energy-charge component, not a guaranteed change in the total bill. Fixed charges, duties or taxes, subsidies, fuel or other adjustments, and slab effects can also affect the amount due.
