If OBS is stuck on “Starting,” first check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health message, then check OBS’s own status. A YouTube encoder-start error calls for checking the stream key; dropped frames point to the connection or bitrate; “encoding overloaded” points to local computer load. These are different problems, so resetting the key is not a universal fix.
First identify where the stream is getting stuck
Start OBS streaming, then open the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check whether YouTube shows a preview and read its stream-health message. At the same time, watch OBS for dropped frames or an encoding-overload warning. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health and messages during a test; its live troubleshooting page has a separate path for an “error starting your encoder.”
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | First check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an encoder-start error | Stream key or encoder connection details | Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update OBS. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Network stability, server path, or bitrate | Check upload capacity and connection; try the OBS connection steps below. |
| OBS reports “encoding overloaded” | Local rendering or encoding resources | Reduce GPU, scene, resolution, or frame-rate load. |
| YouTube has no preview but OBS shows no clear warning | Stream configuration or connection | Verify the service, key, server, and protocol in OBS; inspect YouTube’s exact message. |
The message and preview narrow the diagnosis, but the exact cause depends on your OBS log, stream-health message, and network conditions.
Fix a YouTube encoder-start error
For a third-party encoder such as OBS, YouTube’s specific first action for an “error starting your encoder” is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. Then try connecting again. This is targeted advice for that error, not proof that every stream stuck on “Starting” has a bad key.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the intended stream.
- Copy the current stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream and confirm that the service/account and server or stream URL are for the intended YouTube broadcast.
- Replace the key and apply the change. Keep the key private; do not post it in a forum or support message.
- Start streaming again and check whether YouTube receives a preview and reports healthy stream status.
A stream key is a credential YouTube uses to accept the feed. If it may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube and update the encoder. If you sign in to YouTube from third-party software without entering a stream key and see an encoder-start error, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support; it may need an update to work with YouTube Live.
When to check RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Check this specifically if OBS reports an SSL error or connection timeout: verify that the configured server URL is actually RTMPS rather than RTMP, check the URL and port, and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance documents port 443 as a possible configuration. Switching protocols without an error that suggests a protocol, SSL, or timeout problem is not a general cure for a starting stall.

Fix dropped frames by testing the connection
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote stream server that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Its connection guide says this is very unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. Work through the connection path before changing unrelated settings.
- Try another server in OBS’s stream settings, if another appropriate server is available.
- Lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a practical starting point. That is an OBS troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stable sustained upload.
- Use wired Ethernet if possible. Wi-Fi can be unstable; test with a known-good cable you already have before buying anything.
- Check interference from security and network software: firewall or antivirus rules, a VPN, network-prioritization utilities, and network drivers can affect the connection.
- Isolate the path: OBS suggests testing another streaming service to help determine whether the issue is specific to the service or broader connection.
- Restart the modem and router if instability persists. Hardware faults are possible; if the problem remains after troubleshooting, OBS advises contacting your ISP.
Dynamic bitrate in OBS can lower quality during congestion, but OBS describes it as a workaround, not a fix for the underlying connection problem.

Fix “encoding overloaded” by reducing local load
An encoding-overload warning is different from dropped frames: it points to local rendering or encoding performance. OBS scenes use GPU resources, so reduce competing work and simplify what OBS has to render.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a first quick test; behavior and labels can vary by OBS version.
- Close known GPU-heavy programs and, if streaming a game, reduce its graphics settings or frame rate.
- Reduce output frame rate if necessary, such as changing from 60 fps to 30 fps.
- Lower output resolution to reduce the encoding workload.
- Simplify the scene by reducing resource-intensive browser sources, filters, and other demanding sources.
These steps address local rendering and encoding load; they will not repair an invalid stream key or an unreachable YouTube server.

Check OBS settings against YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s official encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. Its Live Control Room generally detects resolution and frame rate automatically unless a custom key uses manual settings.
The following are YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended bitrate figures—not measurements of your internet connection. A stream must also fit the stable upload capacity available to you.

Use a speed test as a guide, then choose settings your connection can sustain reliably. If it cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate and test again. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations can change, so consult its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance when setting up a new stream.
Run a useful test before going live
YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages. A still screen or silent test may not reveal the same problems as the actual broadcast.
- Start a test stream with representative audio and movement.
- Record YouTube’s exact stream-health message and whether a preview appears.
- Note OBS’s dropped-frame or encoding indicators, the selected server and protocol, and any relevant error in the OBS log.
- Change one likely cause at a time, then repeat the test so you can tell which change helped.
If the connection checks fail to resolve persistent instability, share the observations with your ISP. The exact warning, preview status, and OBS log are more useful for escalation than the phrase “stuck on starting” alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than troubleshoot a live OBS session, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera-based live broadcasting. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
