There is no universal ranking of Christmas movies: critics’ scores, sales on a single storefront, holiday spirit and personal rewatch appeal measure different things. This list is an editorial selection, balancing how central Christmas is to each story with craft, staying power, genre variety and who might enjoy it. It moves from traditional favorites to romance, animation and action, including two films whose Christmas-movie status is often debated.
How this ranking works
Rotten Tomatoes says its 100 Best Christmas Movies of All Time guide is ordered by Tomatometer score, with Certified Fresh films first; the guide was updated January 6, 2026. That is a critic-score-based ranking, not the method used here. Apple, meanwhile, reported in 2016 that Elf was iTunes’ all-time best-selling holiday movie in the United States. That historical storefront claim says nothing definitive about current popularity or critical quality, and Apple did not provide a sales count. Apple’s announcement also placed National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation second and Home Alone fourth on its iTunes list.
For this selection, the main considerations are Christmas’s importance to the plot and setting, the film’s distinctive contribution to its genre, its performances and craft, its rewatch appeal, and its fit for different moods and audiences. Those are editorial judgments, not measured scores. The order is a recommendation, not a claim that one ranking can settle the debate.
The 10 best Christmas movies, ranked
1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Frank Capra’s drama earns the top place because Christmas is more than a backdrop: the holiday frames George Bailey’s crisis, the community’s response and the story’s emotional resolution. Its mix of generosity, regret and second chances rewards repeat viewing without relying on seasonal spectacle. It is the strongest pick here for viewers after a heartfelt classic, though its serious stretches make it a different kind of holiday watch from a broad comedy.

2. A Christmas Story (1983)
This comic portrait of a boy’s Christmas-season ambitions turns small domestic frustrations into enduring family comedy. Its child’s-eye view, recognizable household rituals and tightly observed humor make it especially suited to a nostalgic group watch. Warner Bros. Classics includes it in its holiday collection, alongside several other titles on this list.
3. Home Alone (1990)
Home Alone pairs a clear Christmas setting with slapstick ingenuity and a surprisingly tender story about family. Kevin’s improvised defenses supply the big comic set pieces, while the holiday separation gives the plot its stakes. It works well for a family movie night, especially for viewers who want energetic comedy rather than a solemn seasonal story. Apple’s 2016 iTunes announcement ranked it fourth among that storefront’s all-time holiday movie sellers in the United States—a dated, platform-specific commercial measure, not a current popularity ranking.
Rank #2
4. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Clark Griswold’s increasingly disastrous effort to deliver a perfect family Christmas makes this the list’s most concentrated domestic farce. Its appeal lies in comic escalation and in recognizing how holiday expectations can turn ordinary mishaps into a full-scale crisis. It is a better fit for viewers who enjoy chaotic, irreverent comedy than for those seeking a gentle or especially child-oriented film. Warner Bros. Classics features it in its holiday collection, and Apple placed it second in its 2016 iTunes holiday-sales announcement.
5. Elf (2003)
Will Ferrell’s wide-eyed performance gives Elf its particular charm: the comedy comes from Buddy’s sincere enthusiasm colliding with a skeptical New York. The story keeps Christmas at its center while offering a bright, contemporary family comedy. It is a natural choice for a cheerful rewatch. Apple called it iTunes’ all-time best-selling holiday movie in the United States in December 2016; that claim belongs to that storefront and date, not to an all-platform measure of what audiences watch today.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Tim Burton’s stop-motion fantasy sits between Halloween and Christmas by design. Its macabre visual world and Jack Skellington’s attempt to take over Christmas make it a distinctive choice for viewers who want seasonal animation with an eerie edge. It qualifies as a Christmas movie for many people, but its crossover identity is part of its appeal—not something every viewer has to accept to enjoy it.
7. Love Actually (2003)
This ensemble romantic comedy follows several relationships through a London Christmas season, making the holiday part of the film’s structure as well as its atmosphere. Its interconnected stories suit viewers who want romance, sentiment and multiple comic or emotional threads rather than one central hero’s journey. It is an adult-oriented seasonal option, not a universal family pick. Amazon’s seasonal guide has listed it among its selected Christmas films, but access modes and availability can change.
Rank #4
8. The Polar Express (2004)
This animated journey to the North Pole leans into Christmas wonder and childhood belief. Its destination, imagery and seasonal premise make it an easy fit for families looking for a magical, winter-holiday story. The film’s mood is more dreamlike than comic, so it suits viewers who want spectacle and sentiment over fast-paced jokes. Disney included it in its November 19, 2025 holiday programming announcement; that announcement covered the 2025 season and does not establish where it is available now.
9. Die Hard (1988)
Die Hard is an action film set during a Christmas party, not a conventional holiday story. Christmas is unmistakable in its setting and details, but the central appeal is suspense and action. That makes it a strong pick for viewers who want a seasonal backdrop without a family-comedy or romance formula—and a disputed inclusion for anyone who requires Christmas to drive the plot. Rotten Tomatoes’ Christmas guide accommodates genre variety and recognizes that seasonal choices such as this one can be contested.

10. The Grinch (2018)
This animated adaptation offers a colorful, accessible introduction to the Grinch’s change of heart, with Christmas and community at the center. Its family-friendly tone makes it a useful choice for a younger audience or a lighter seasonal watch. It is not the only screen version of the story, so viewers looking for a particular adaptation should check the title and year before pressing play. Amazon’s seasonal guide has included it among selected films, but does not guarantee present-day availability in every territory.

Where to watch these Christmas movies
Streaming catalogs, rental listings and purchase options vary by country and change over time. Amazon’s seasonal guide lists selected films—including Elf, Home Alone, Love Actually and The Grinch—with different access modes, such as rental, purchase or subscription, but it is not a guarantee of current availability. Disney’s November 19, 2025 announcement covered its holiday programming for that season and named films including Home Alone, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Polar Express, A Christmas Story, Die Hard and The Nightmare Before Christmas; those past-season details should not be read as a current catalog. Check a local service listing for the exact title and edition before watching.
For physical media, confirm the release, format and region code before buying. A search for “Christmas movies DVD” may surface multiple editions, but a general holiday collection page does not verify that every film is in stock or included in a particular set.
