For a technically comfortable creator streaming one modest prerecorded podcast feed, start by costing a small Linux VPS in an Indian region—but compare the full monthly bill, not just the server price. Include outbound data, storage, archive size, stream hours, and any transcoding. Amazon Lightsail is a straightforward fixed-bundle reference point, though its Mumbai transfer allowance is half the displayed baseline. Google Cloud Live Stream API is a managed encoding service, not a VPS, and Oracle Cloud needs a workload-specific quote before it can be ranked. If your aim is simply to keep uploaded recordings looping on YouTube without maintaining a server, StreamNeo is a managed alternative.
Which low-cost option should you consider first?
There is no universal cheapest choice until you know how much video you will store, the stream’s resolution and bitrate, how many hours it will run, and whether you need encoding. For a single modest feed, cost-model a small Linux VPS in an Indian region and check that it can sustain the outgoing bitrate. Lightsail is an easy-to-understand starting point, not a proven cheapest provider for every workload. If you need managed transcoding rather than a server to administer, evaluate Google Cloud Live Stream API separately.
Compare the service models
| Option | What it provides | India pricing or allowance detail | What to verify for your workload |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Managed cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube; not a VPS and not a camera encoder. | Monthly: $9.99 per month. The first day is free with no card. | It is intended for uploaded-video streaming to YouTube, not general-purpose server hosting or transcoding control. |
| Amazon Lightsail | Self-managed VPS in a fixed bundle. | AWS’s current displayed Linux/Unix bundle starts at $5 USD per month with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB baseline transfer. Mumbai plans include half the displayed transfer allowance; AWS counts incoming and outgoing transfer against the allowance. | Check Mumbai’s effective allowance, outbound overage charges, archive storage, and whether the VM sustains your bitrate. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Managed encoding and streaming, not like-for-like VPS hosting. | Billing depends on active channel time and input/output resolution; there is a 10-minute minimum and active duration then rounds up to the nearest minute. Mumbai appears in the pricing table. | Estimate actual runtime and output resolution; managed encoding may cost more than a low-end VPS depending on use. |
| Oracle Cloud | Cloud compute and storage priced as separate dimensions. | A like-for-like smallest India VM price is not established here. | Use Oracle’s price calculator for the VM shape, boot or block volume, outbound traffic, and taxes before ranking it. |
Provider prices and allowances can change. Check the linked provider pricing pages for the current terms applicable to your account, region, and billing currency.
Calculate the workload before choosing a server
Estimate outbound transfer
The stream bitrate, not the size of the original podcast file alone, drives sustained outbound traffic. As a rough planning formula, each 1 Mbps of continuous stream output uses about 0.45 GB per hour before protocol overhead. Multiply the stream bitrate in Mbps by hours streamed, then by 0.45 GB; add overhead and any other outbound use. At 5 Mbps for 24 hours a day over a 30-day month, that is roughly 1,620 GB before overhead. This is a planning estimate, not a provider billing quote.

For a self-managed server, distinguish stored archive size from outgoing traffic: keeping a file on disk consumes storage, while sending the live feed to YouTube consumes network egress. Check whether the provider charges for traffic beyond an allowance and whether its allowance includes inbound traffic. Lightsail’s displayed 1 TB bundle figure is reduced by half for Mumbai, and incoming as well as outgoing transfer counts against the allowance.
Estimate storage and compute
- Measure the archive you intend to keep on the server, including room for uploads, temporary files, and replacement versions.
- Determine whether the server will simply replay an already encoded file or transcode it. A relay or replay job may have a different CPU requirement from real-time encoding.
- Confirm sustained network throughput at your selected bitrate; a low monthly compute price is not useful if the instance cannot reliably send the feed.
- Count expected stream hours, including restarts and testing, and include backup storage and provider taxes in the budget.
Choose a YouTube-compatible output
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). For H.264, its current recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular VPS can sustain the connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Choose a resolution and bitrate that suit the source archive and the channel’s audience. If the archive is already encoded at the quality you want, avoid adding a transcoding workload unless you need it. For a server that does encode, test CPU headroom and the output’s stability at the intended settings before relying on it for a long session.
Set up the self-managed VPS workflow
The exact server controls and software commands depend on the provider and replay software. The essential sequence is the same: provision a suitable India-region Linux VM, store the archive, configure a process to publish the selected file or playlist to YouTube using the stream settings above, and monitor the live output. Do not place a reusable stream key in a public script or repository.

- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s setup guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Review YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance before provisioning a server.
- Select the region and VM. Choose an India region close to your intended operating context, then verify available memory, CPU, disk, and network capacity against the archive and outgoing stream. For Mumbai Lightsail, account for the region’s reduced transfer allowance.
- Price the complete configuration. Add the VM, disk or object storage, estimated outbound transfer, any overage, and applicable taxes. For Oracle, use its official calculator because compute and storage are separate price dimensions and the available price-list evidence does not establish a smallest-VM comparison.
- Upload and verify the archive. Keep a separate local copy. Confirm that each file plays through to its end and that the playlist advances as expected before scheduling unattended output.
- Configure YouTube output. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use its stream URL and key in your streaming software. Prefer RTMPS, set CBR, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your selected resolution and frame rate, and set a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds).
- Run a supervised test. Confirm YouTube receives the stream, audio and video are synchronized, the selected bitrate is stable, and the playlist transitions correctly. Review server load and network use before leaving it unattended.
- Automate carefully. Configure the replay process to start on reboot and log failures, while keeping the stream key private. Verify recovery behavior yourself; a VPS does not automatically provide a managed recovery service just because it is in the cloud.
Protect the archive, channel, and rights
Keep a backup outside YouTube
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. Break long programming into sessions under 12 hours where practical and retain a separate local copy rather than relying on the channel archive as your only copy. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
Confirm rights and live eligibility
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the streamer to have the necessary worldwide rights for the content, explicitly including music rights. A third-party copyright match may replace the live stream with a placeholder and can interrupt or terminate it. Verify rights for every recording, music cue, intro, and other included material before scheduling the feed. Read YouTube’s terms and YouTube’s copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Likely causes: wrong stream URL or key, an expired or changed key, a non-eligible channel, or a blocked outbound connection.
- Fix: recheck the live event’s current RTMPS details, confirm channel eligibility, and verify the server can reach YouTube on the configured connection. Do not publish the key while asking for help.
The stream buffers, drops, or exceeds the allowance
- Likely causes: inadequate sustained throughput, bitrate set too high for the path, or monthly egress beyond the region’s included transfer.
- Fix: check server and provider traffic metrics, test at the selected output bitrate, lower resolution or bitrate if needed, and recalculate monthly transfer. For Mumbai Lightsail, do not use the displayed baseline transfer figure as the full regional allowance.
The VM struggles while streaming
- Likely causes: transcoding on an undersized instance, competing processes, or insufficient disk space for the archive and temporary files.
- Fix: establish whether the workflow needs transcoding, inspect CPU and disk use during a supervised test, and resize or simplify the processing workload accordingly.
The stream stops or the archive is missing
- Likely causes: replay process failure, a session longer than YouTube may archive, or a copyright match.
- Fix: inspect process logs and YouTube notifications, test restart behavior, divide programming into shorter sessions, and keep a separate local copy. Resolve any rights issue before restarting the same content.
