You can keep a meditation podcast live on YouTube by sending a prepared audio-and-visual feed through an encoder such as OBS. YouTube does not guarantee that a single 24-hour broadcast will be archived, however: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a do-it-yourself setup, plan for monitoring, a stable upload connection and local recordings—and decide whether uninterrupted continuity or replay preservation matters more.

What a 24/7 meditation stream requires

A continuous stream is more than a scheduled YouTube event. An encoder must keep sending audio and video to YouTube, and someone must be able to respond if the computer, network or stream fails. Scheduling creates an event and watch page; it does not itself play content continuously or restart a failed broadcast.

For a prerecorded meditation podcast, the feed can use the podcast audio with a static or gently animated visual. You do not need a microphone to stream audio that has already been produced. OBS is a free, open-source software option for streaming and recording, with scenes and audio mixing; YouTube also supports hardware encoders and external audio or video equipment. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to begin.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Enable live streaming ahead of time. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the planned launch.
  2. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Choose the title, description, visual and privacy settings. If you schedule it, use the event’s watch page to promote the broadcast. Scheduling does not provide continuous playback or automatic restarts.
  3. Prepare the podcast feed in an encoder. Add the audio and a visual scene, then confirm that the audio plays continuously and at a comfortable level. If you want the same recording to repeat, configure the prepared feed to repeat in your encoder; the exact controls depend on the software and setup.
  4. Copy the event connection details. In YouTube Studio, retrieve the server URL and stream key for the event and enter them in the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: it associates your encoder with the broadcast, so do not share or publish it.
  5. Set and test the output. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate the computer and upload connection can sustain. Follow the current stream settings shown in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all bitrate. Check the encoder’s keyframe setting against YouTube’s displayed requirements for the stream.
  6. Start the encoder and check the preview. Start sending the feed before relying on the public event. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the watch page is accessible, and listen for clean, uninterrupted audio.
  7. Keep monitoring during the broadcast. Watch stream health, audio and video quality, and verify that local recording files continue to grow. YouTube recommends arranging the encoder in advance, starting it before the event and checking the event on watch pages and mobile devices.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit

YouTube Help’s “Archive live streams” guidance says: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A broadcast can therefore be available live while its replay is missing or incomplete. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.

If a complete replay matters, use sessions shorter than 12 hours and make sure each session’s local recording is saved. There is a trade-off: ending and starting sessions interrupts the live event and can affect watch-page continuity, notifications and how recordings are organized. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe an ideal session length or schedule.

DVR is not a substitute for an archive

YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause and resume a live stream, but DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on very long broadcasts, including streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers they can rewind to the beginning of a continuous event.

Keep the connection and computer within their limits

The combined stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth—not the download speed shown by a typical internet plan. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and notes that upload capacity can be lower than download capacity. Network interruptions can break a stream, and other users on the same connection can reduce the capacity available to your encoder.

Test using the resolution and bitrate you intend to run, especially on a shared network. OBS’s official requirements guidance notes that CPU demand varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; meeting baseline requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully. There is no universally reliable computer specification for every meditation setup, so test your own machine and scene before going live.

Clear the rights for every part of the feed

YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for having all rights needed for worldwide use of live content on Google services, including music licensing rights, and for following applicable laws and YouTube guidelines. Check rights for backing music, sound baths, spoken material, artwork and reused podcast recordings before including them in a live feed or its archive.

Buying a track or having a license for another platform does not by itself establish that you may use it in a YouTube livestream and the resulting replay. Keep records of permissions and confirm that they cover the intended use.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions apply. If live streaming was only just enabled, allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation window of up to 24 hours.
  • The event exists but has no video: Confirm that the encoder is running and that it has the correct event’s server URL and stream key. Check the Live Control Room preview before directing viewers to the watch page.
  • The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check upload capacity and competing network use. Retest at the intended output settings and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
  • The audio is silent, clipped or stops between recordings: Check the encoder’s audio source, level and playback continuity, then listen to the preview. Verify the feed again after changing scenes or source files.
  • The computer struggles or the local recording stops: Reduce the demands of the chosen output or scene and test again. Check that the local archive file is still growing; a live feed should not be treated as the only copy.
  • The broadcast is live but the replay is absent or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions when YouTube replay matters and maintain a local recording.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough: Very long streams may have limited or unavailable DVR. DVR is not a dependable way to recover the start of a 24/7 event.
  • A music or reused-content claim appears: Recheck the rights for every audio, spoken and visual element, including whether permissions cover YouTube livestreaming and the archive. Remove or replace material you cannot use.
