First find out why the process stopped, then check whether YouTube is receiving data and whether the current ingest settings are valid. For unattended streams, a service manager can restart FFmpeg after a failure—but a restart alone cannot guarantee that YouTube will accept the next connection.
1. Confirm what stopped
Record the time of the outage, whether the FFmpeg process actually exited, its exit code, and the final error lines in its log. The player appearing offline does not establish that FFmpeg crashed: the process may still be running while its input stalls or its output connection fails.
- Process exited: use the exit code and final log lines to identify the failure path.
- Process still running: check whether it is reading the input and sending output packets; investigate an input stall or output connection problem.
2. Check YouTube’s stream status and health
Check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and compare its status and health information with FFmpeg’s logs. The YouTube Live Streaming API defines active as data being received and inactive as no data being received. Health can be good, ok, bad, or noData; the API also exposes configuration issues. These are diagnostic signals, not a guarantee of how quickly a stream will recover. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams

3. Verify the ingest URL, protocol, and key
In Live Control Room, confirm that FFmpeg is using the current stream URL and stream key. YouTube says to retrieve the RTMPS URL from the Stream URL control and use the stream key there. It describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and advises verifying the server URL and protocol, as well as encoder RTMPS support, when diagnosing connection timeouts. Keep the stream key private. Do not expose it in public logs, support tickets, screenshots, or scripts committed to source control.
4. Match the error to the input or output
Input, read, or decode error
Check that the input is available, readable, and behaving as expected. For a finite file, determine whether it simply reached EOF and whether the command is configured to loop it. A finite file reaching its end is different from an endless source disappearing; choose recovery behavior that fits the input rather than relying on an output reconnect option.

Output or connection error
Recheck the current URL, protocol, key, network reachability, and YouTube’s stream health. For RTMPS timeout or SSL errors, YouTube’s guidance specifically calls for verifying the URL and protocol and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
FFmpeg is running but no data arrives
Inspect whether the input is advancing and whether FFmpeg is producing frames and audio. Then check whether output packets are reaching the configured ingest address. A running process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.

5. Use reconnect options only for the transport they cover
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error in its HTTP protocol documentation. That documentation describes HTTP reconnection behavior; it does not establish these options as a universal recovery switch for RTMP or RTMPS output to YouTube. 6. Keep an unattended FFmpeg process supervised
If the stream needs to run unattended, launch FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor. Configure it to restart after an unexpected exit, retain useful logs, and avoid an unbounded rapid restart loop. The exact setup depends on the operating system and supervisor; validate the actual command and stream behavior with a controlled failure rather than assuming a restart policy will fix every outage.

A supervisor restores the sending process after an exit. It does not repair a bad command, restore a missing input, correct an invalid key, or ensure YouTube accepts a new connection. No universal restart interval or OS-specific service file is established here.
7. Treat backup ingest as redundancy, not automatic failover
YouTube documents primary and backup ingest addresses and optional simultaneous delivery of the same content to the backup. A backup address does not mean YouTube automatically starts a second sender when a single FFmpeg process exits. For redundant ingest, confirm that the encoder can send to both destinations and that the outputs use compatible settings. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
