You can keep a YouTube encoder running from a DigitalOcean Droplet in the Bangalore region, BLR1, by configuring an encoder with your YouTube Live Control Room stream URL and key, then running it under a service supervisor rather than an SSH session. That keeps the server-side process alive when you disconnect; it does not guarantee that one YouTube live event or watch page will remain open indefinitely. Before choosing this design, check your channel’s live-streaming eligibility, plan for outbound data, and verify how you want long broadcasts to roll over and be archived.
What “continuous” means for a YouTube stream
A VPS can keep an encoder process running around the clock, but process uptime and YouTube event uptime are different things. The encoder sends a feed to YouTube; YouTube controls the live event, its watch page, and its archive behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that leaving an encoder running creates one indefinitely open event or a guaranteed archive for a multi-day broadcast. Confirm the desired event rollover and watch-page behavior in the current Live Control Room before designing a long-running schedule.
This guide describes an operational setup, not a tested deployment. Choose the server size and encoder configuration for your specific input, resolution, frame rate, and codec, then test them before relying on the stream.
Check YouTube Live eligibility and create the event
- Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm live streaming is enabled. The channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Set the event’s intended privacy and schedule, if applicable. Decide whether you need a single watch page, planned event rollovers, or separate scheduled events; that choice affects how you operate a 24/7 feed.
- Copy the ingest details. Get the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS endpoint if your encoder build supports it. YouTube’s stream settings provide the URL and key; the lock icon in those settings identifies the secure ingest option.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, article, shared script, or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
Create and secure a Droplet in Bangalore
- Select the region. When creating a DigitalOcean Droplet, choose BLR1, DigitalOcean’s Bangalore region.
- Choose a CPU plan based on the workload. A loop of already encoded media and live software encoding have different CPU requirements. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and any transformations also matter. The available information does not establish a particular Droplet size as sufficient; benchmark the actual workload rather than assuming a plan will handle it.
- Use SSH-key authentication. Add an SSH public key during setup. After provisioning, create a non-root account with sudo access and disable root password login in line with DigitalOcean’s baseline security guidance.
- Restrict inbound access. Use a cloud firewall that allows only the inbound ports needed for administration—normally SSH—and any other service you deliberately operate. Do not open ports simply because an encoder is sending an outbound stream to YouTube.
- Enable visibility and recovery measures. Configure monitoring and alerts if you need ongoing visibility, and backups if they fit your recovery requirements. DigitalOcean’s monitoring agent needs outbound access on ports 80 and 443 to report metrics.
Install and configure the encoder
FFmpeg is one possible software encoder for a VPS. The exact installation command and options depend on the Droplet’s operating system and the FFmpeg build available there; verify the current package instructions and command syntax for that environment rather than copying an unverified recipe. Configure the encoder with the Live Control Room URL and key, and keep credentials out of public files and logs.

Choose settings for the source and available capacity
- Codec, resolution, and frame rate: Match the output to the source and the quality you need. Higher resolution or frame rate generally calls for more encoding capacity and network bandwidth.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for encoder streaming.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Illustrative H.264 bitrates: YouTube’s recommended values include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are examples for those specific output settings, not universal values for every codec or stream.
- Network margin: YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Keep the total stream bitrate below the available upload capacity; network interruptions can disrupt the feed.
Send a test before announcing the stream
Start with an unlisted or private test, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, and use representative movement and audio. Check playback from another device and network. A preview that appears locally is not enough: confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects
Do not launch a long-running encoder as a foreground process in an interactive SSH session. If the session ends, the process may end with it. Run the encoder under a service supervisor such as systemd, configured to start at boot, restart after an unexpected failure, and send output to logs. The exact unit file depends on the operating system, media path, encoder command, and credential-handling approach, so validate it on the selected Droplet rather than relying on an untested generic unit.

- Check that the service starts successfully and that its logs show the expected input and connection to YouTube.
- Configure restart behavior, then deliberately test recovery after stopping the process.
- Reboot the Droplet during a planned test and verify that the service starts again and YouTube receives the feed.
- If media is stored on the Droplet, monitor disk space and confirm the file remains available to the service account.
- Set up alerts for service failure or loss of expected monitoring data, and periodically inspect YouTube’s preview or watch page.
A service supervisor can restart a failed encoder, but it cannot by itself guarantee that YouTube’s event remains available, that the network is stable, or that a viewer-facing page has rolled over as intended.
Estimate bandwidth and DigitalOcean transfer costs
The Droplet’s outbound stream to YouTube counts as egress. For a steady bitrate of B Mbps, a 30-day estimate is approximately B × 0.0108 decimal TB, or B × 10.8 decimal GB, before audio and transport overhead or reconnects. This is a calculation from bitrate and time, not a published YouTube allowance. For example, 10 Mbps is about 108 GB over 30 days before those additions.

DigitalOcean’s Droplet outbound transfer allowance is pooled at team level; additional outbound transfer is listed at $0.01/GiB. Check the current billing page for the actual team allowance and billed GiB before committing, because region, plan, and account details can affect the amount available. Budget for the stream’s sustained egress, not just the size of the media file on disk.
Test the full operating cycle
- Run a private or unlisted test and confirm the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Check audio, motion, and playback from a separate device and network.
- Test the encoder service’s restart behavior and verify that its logs make failures diagnosable.
- Reboot the server during a planned test and confirm service startup and YouTube ingest afterward.
- Check the planned event lifecycle in the current Live Control Room, especially rollover and archive expectations for broadcasts approaching or exceeding 12 hours.
- Review Droplet egress, monitoring, and available disk space after the test.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming cannot be enabled or the event will not start | Channel eligibility is incomplete, a restriction applies, or first-time enablement is still processing. | Check verification and live-streaming status in YouTube Studio. First enablement can take up to 24 hours; the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect ingest URL or key, a rotated key, or an unsupported endpoint configuration. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the encoder’s RTMPS support if using RTMPS, and keep the key private. Reset an exposed key and update the encoder. |
| Stream health fluctuates or the feed drops | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, or bitrate settings that exceed the connection’s reliable capacity. | Keep total bitrate below available upload capacity, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect the encoder and stream-health indicators. |
| Stream stops when SSH disconnects | The encoder was started in the interactive shell rather than under a supervisor. | Run it through a service supervisor, inspect service status and logs, and test restart behavior. |
| Encoder does not return after a server reboot | The service is not enabled at boot, its command or media path is invalid, or credentials are unavailable to its service account. | Check the service’s boot configuration, logs, file permissions, and credential setup; verify with a planned reboot. |
| Droplet transfer usage rises faster than expected | A continuous bitrate accumulates data around the clock, with further usage from overhead and reconnects. | Recalculate using actual bitrate and run time, then compare billed GiB with the team’s pooled allowance in DigitalOcean billing. |
| The encoder remains active but the event or archive is not what you expected | Encoder uptime does not determine YouTube event rollover or archive behavior. | Check current Live Control Room behavior and plan scheduled or rolled events and watch pages accordingly; YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. |
