Use a system-level systemd service to run your encoder in the foreground, then configure a cautious restart policy so it can recover from process failures and start again after a server reboot. That supervises the encoder; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. You still need a reliable source, enough outbound bandwidth, protected stream credentials, and checks of both systemd and YouTube’s stream health.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd can supervise an encoder process independently of your SSH session. With a suitable service enabled for boot, it can also start that process after a server reboot. A restart policy can relaunch the encoder when it fails under the policy’s conditions.
That is process recovery, not end-to-end stream availability. systemd cannot restore a missing video source, fix inadequate CPU or outbound bandwidth, repair DNS or firewall problems, guarantee YouTube ingest availability, or confirm that viewers are receiving healthy video. Those require separate checks and remedies.
Prepare the encoder, source, and server
Choose an encoder that can run without an interactive session
Install an encoder suited to your source, such as FFmpeg or OBS in a suitable headless workflow. Confirm that it can generate or read a continuous input and run without an interactive terminal. The exact encoder command and reconnect behavior depend on the encoder and its configuration; check that encoder’s documentation rather than assuming systemd will handle YouTube reconnection.

Check server capacity and upload bandwidth
Measure the actual outbound path from the remote server. YouTube recommends keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom; upload capacity can be lower than download capacity. Allow additional capacity for other server traffic or a backup encoder. A service restart cannot compensate for a persistently saturated or unreliable network.
Choose YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Bitrate depends on resolution, codec, and frame rate, so use the current [YouTube bitrate and resolution guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) for your chosen combination rather than applying one value to every stream. For reference, YouTube’s table recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/30 fps, with 5 Mbps as the minimum; this is only an example for that combination.

Create a system-level service
Run the encoder directly in the foreground
Create a system-level .service unit in the system unit directory used by your distribution. Run the encoder directly in the foreground so systemd tracks the process it needs to supervise. Use a dedicated, unprivileged service account and grant it only the file and network access it needs. A user-level service tied to an interactive login is not the right default for a server workload that must not depend on that login.
The exact unit syntax, paths, account, credential method, and hardening directives vary by distribution and installed systemd version. Treat this as a configuration pattern, not a tested, copy-paste unit: check the service manual and credential features available on the target host before deploying it.

Set a deliberate restart policy
For recovery from unexpected failures, a policy such as Restart=on-failure with a considered RestartSec= delay is a sensible starting point. Choose the delay with the failure mode in mind; restarting immediately and repeatedly can obscure a persistent configuration error or run into systemd start limits.
Do not use Restart=always automatically. A normal exit may mean the stream ended intentionally, and restarting in that case may not be what you want. Confirm how the selected policy treats the encoder’s exit conditions and how the installed systemd version applies start limits. Restart-policy behavior and available directives are version-sensitive; verify them on your server.

Protect the YouTube stream key
YouTube says stream keys are like your stream’s password and address. Put the stream URL and key in the encoder configuration, but keep the key out of public files, shell history, and logs. Do not put secrets in a world-readable unit file. Use restrictive file permissions or a credential mechanism supported by the systemd version installed on the host. If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
Load, enable, and start the service
- Save the unit and configuration. Confirm that the service account can read the required input and configuration, and that the stream key is not exposed through file permissions or logging.
- Reload systemd’s configuration. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing a system unit. - Enable it at boot if required. Run
sudo systemctl enable <unit>, replacing<unit>with the service name. This arranges for the service to start during boot; it does not start it immediately. - Start the service. Run
sudo systemctl start <unit>. - Check the process and its logs. Inspect
sudo systemctl status <unit>andsudo journalctl -u <unit>. Look for encoder errors, failed input, permission problems, or connection failures rather than treating an active unit as proof that the broadcast is healthy. - Verify the YouTube feed. Check the stream preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room, then confirm that audio, video, and viewer playback are working.
The commands above are typical for systemd-based Linux hosts; check the unit name and command availability on your distribution.

Test recovery and monitor the broadcast
Prove that restart behavior works
Before relying on the service, deliberately test a controlled encoder failure. Confirm that systemd starts the process again after the failure, then check whether the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives a healthy feed. A service shown as active only confirms the state systemd sees; it does not prove that the source, ingest connection, or viewer playback is sound.
Watch both systemd and YouTube
- Systemd: Check the unit state and journal for exits, repeated restarts, and the underlying error.
- YouTube: Check the preview, stream-health messages, audio/video quality, and viewer playback. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health during it.
- Server and network: Investigate source availability, CPU capacity, DNS, firewall rules, and actual outbound bandwidth if the encoder or feed fails. Repeated restarts will not fix a persistent underlying fault.
Account for YouTube’s archive boundary
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that statement as evidence that one YouTube session can run indefinitely. If your plan depends on a longer continuous broadcast, account for the session boundary and verify the current YouTube guidance for your stream.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The service does not start after reboot | Boot enablement, unit configuration, or startup dependencies | Check systemctl is-enabled <unit>, systemctl status <unit>, and the journal. Confirm the unit was reloaded after edits and that the service is a system-level unit enabled for boot. |
| The service repeatedly restarts | Encoder exit, bad configuration, missing input, or overly aggressive restart behavior | Read the journal for the original failure. Check paths, permissions, input availability, and restart delay/start limits. Do not assume another restart corrected the cause. |
| systemd reports active, but YouTube has no healthy feed | Encoder-to-YouTube connection or stream configuration | Check the encoder output, stream URL and key, YouTube preview, and stream-health messages. Confirm the encoder’s reconnect behavior in its own documentation. |
| The connection drops or video quality degrades | Outbound network capacity, route, DNS, or firewall | Test the server’s actual upload path and compare total stream bitrate with available capacity, preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check DNS and firewall access to the configured ingest endpoint. |
| systemd reaches a start limit | Repeated failure or a restart loop | Fix the underlying error first, then follow the installed systemd version’s documented procedure for resetting the failed state and starting the service again. Avoid simply removing limits or shortening the delay. |
| The YouTube key may have leaked | Credential exposure | Reset the stream key in Live Control Room, update the encoder’s protected configuration, and check that the replacement is not exposed in files, shell history, or logs. |
