To keep a church worship sequence in order on a continuous YouTube stream, arrange the files in the encoder that sends the broadcast, turn shuffle off, and enable looping if the sequence should repeat. In OBS, use a VLC Video source for several files or a Media Source for one prepared file. Reordering a YouTube playlist changes YouTube playback; it does not reorder the encoder’s outgoing live feed.
First, identify which playlist you need to control
There are two different things people may mean by a “YouTube playlist”:
- A playlist viewers play on YouTube: Open the playlist and drag videos into the desired order. YouTube also documents temporary reordering from the playlist panel on a watch page. Those controls affect playback of that YouTube playlist, not an encoder’s live output. YouTube’s playlist instructions describe the available controls.
- A sequence being broadcast live by an encoder: Arrange the media files in the encoder’s source or playlist. The encoder sends the resulting feed to YouTube Live, so changing a separate YouTube playlist will not alter the broadcast sequence.
For a continuous live worship stream, the second case is usually the relevant one. Set the order in OBS or whichever encoder is producing the stream, then check the actual output before sharing the live link.
Choose the OBS source that matches your program
One prepared worship file
If the entire program is already assembled as a single file, add an OBS Media Source and use its loop control if that file should restart after it finishes. This is the simpler source model when you do not need OBS to advance through separate song or video files.

Several separate files
For a sequence of individual files, add a VLC Video source and put the files in the intended order in its properties. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. The source has separate Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist settings; leave shuffle off to preserve your sequence, and turn loop on if it should start again after the last file. See the OBS Media Sources documentation. Labels can vary by OBS version, so check the properties in the version installed on your production computer.
Set up an ordered, repeating sequence in OBS
- Prepare the media. Confirm the files are the right versions and that their audio and visuals are ready for the intended stream. Decide whether the program is one finished file or several files whose order you may need to revise.
- Add the right source. In OBS, add a Media Source for one file. For several files, add a VLC Video source; install VLC if that source is unavailable.
- Arrange the files. In the VLC Video source properties, place the files in the exact running order. Check the start and end of the sequence so the transition from the final item back to the first is acceptable if you plan to loop it.
- Set playback behavior. Keep Shuffle Playlist off. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the full multi-file sequence. For a single Media Source, use its loop control if the one file should repeat.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use the stream URL and stream key provided in YouTube’s live-stream settings to connect the encoder. A stream key is a credential for sending the feed: keep it private and do not show it in a public scene, recording, or screenshot. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Check the program in preview. Confirm the intended source is active, the first item is correct, audio is present, and the files advance in the expected order. If you can, observe the final item and the restart before publishing or sharing the stream.
What viewers can and cannot change
A viewer’s YouTube playlist controls are separate from the media list feeding a live encoder. YouTube’s documented drag-and-drop and temporary reorder controls can change the order in which playlist videos are played, but they do not change the order of files in OBS. Likewise, DVR is a viewer playback feature, not a control for the broadcast playlist. YouTube notes that rewind limits apply to very long live streams; DVR does not rearrange songs or files.

Check music and video rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube also says that a rights owner may need to add a channel to a Content ID allowlist even when the streamer has licensed the content. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Do not assume that a general church performance license automatically covers every use in a continuous YouTube stream. Check the permissions for the specific composition, arrangement or translation, recording, visuals, destination, territory, archive, and term with the rights holder or licensing provider. The relevant license terms determine what is covered; YouTube’s copyright guidance explains detection and allowlisting, not the scope of a particular church’s license.

When to use each ordering method

Troubleshooting order and playback
The live stream order does not match the YouTube playlist
Check the encoder’s media source, not the playlist page. Reorder the files in the VLC Video source or change the contents of the single file used by the Media Source.
The songs play in a different order each time
Open the VLC Video source properties and turn Shuffle Playlist off. Check the configured file order as well.

The sequence stops after the last file
For multiple files, enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source. For one file, enable the Media Source loop control. Confirm the setting in the OBS version you are using.
The VLC Video source is missing
OBS documents that VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Install VLC, then reopen or recheck the source options in OBS.

YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast
A third-party-content match may cause a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Check the content and the permissions for the specific material; where the rights owner requires it, ask them to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license by itself does not establish that the channel has been allowlisted.
