If OBS crashes, it stops sending the church’s audio and video to YouTube. Viewers may lose the live picture or sound, and YouTube may report a stream-health problem. Restarting OBS may restore a feed, but YouTube does not guarantee that it will resume the same broadcast. Check the Live Control Room before telling viewers the stream is back.
What viewers may see when OBS crashes
OBS is the encoder: it takes the church’s audio and video and sends that feed to YouTube using the configured stream details. If the application crashes, it can no longer produce or send the feed. The result for viewers depends on the broadcast’s state and settings; they may see the picture or sound stop, or encounter a live-stream interruption.
YouTube’s official guidance describes stream-health errors and encoder troubleshooting, but does not specify a universal reconnect grace period or promise that restarting OBS will continue the same broadcast. YouTube’s stream key is the encoder’s “password and address”: YouTube Help’s stream settings.
What to do after OBS stops
- Check Live Control Room. Look at stream health and the timestamps on any errors. This helps establish whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed and when problems began. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guide.
- Confirm OBS is running and sending. Check for encoder errors and CPU load. If you recorded locally, inspect the archive to see whether audio and video were captured there.
- Check the outbound internet connection. If OBS appears to be working but YouTube is not receiving a healthy feed, test the connection from the streaming location.
- Verify the incoming preview and audio. Confirm the Live Control Room shows usable video and sound before announcing that the stream is restored. A returning feed does not guarantee that the original broadcast has resumed.
- Keep viewers informed if recovery is delayed. Say that the stream is interrupted and point viewers to the church’s chosen update channel. Do not promise a return time you cannot verify.
Will restarting OBS bring back the same broadcast?
It may re-establish a feed, but the available YouTube guidance does not guarantee that the same broadcast will continue after an OBS crash. The event’s state and settings matter. In particular, YouTube documents Auto-start and Auto-stop controls, but the documentation does not establish one end-of-event timeout for every setup. Check the actual event in Live Control Room rather than assuming a restart will preserve it. See YouTube’s live control room settings.

What a backup server URL does—and does not do
YouTube documents a backup server URL for HLS ingestion, and lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. The backup URL is an alternate destination for a feed; it does not restart OBS or create a second active encoder. If the OBS process has crashed, it cannot send to either the primary or backup destination until an encoder is working. A redundant setup therefore requires an independently functioning source and a tested procedure. YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions do not promise automatic failover from a crashed OBS instance.
Plan for continuity before the next service
For a service where interruptions matter, plan how an independent backup encoder would take over and test the handoff before relying on it. A camera or capture card provides input but does not replace a crashed encoder application; a UPS addresses power loss, not necessarily a software crash. Neither one alone guarantees stream continuity.

Before each service, confirm the encoder and stream configuration, check that the operator can access the Live Control Room, and decide where viewers will find updates if the live feed is interrupted. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, its errors and CPU load, any local archive, and the outbound connection when troubleshooting.
