For several visual clips, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. A local OBS setup requires the computer and internet connection to remain available; for a cloud-run option, see StreamNeo.
Plan the animated background
First decide whether the stream needs one continuous visual or a playlist of different clips. A single clip is simpler to set up; a playlist adds visual variation but has more elements to check. Choose an aspect ratio, style, and level of movement that suit the music and remain comfortable to watch over time.
Make the loop seamless
For a single repeating clip, design its ending to transition naturally into its opening. Alternatively, use restrained movement so the repeat is less noticeable. Preview the transition before streaming; an abrupt cut or flash can become distracting when repeated.
Use properly licensed visuals
Create the animation yourself or use visual assets whose license permits use in a continuous public live stream. Check the license for the specific use you intend, not just whether the asset is available to download. You need appropriate rights to both the visual and the music.

Add and loop the video in OBS
- Create or open a scene. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the stream, or create a new one.
- Add the clip. In the Sources area, choose +, select Media Source, and create a new source. Select the local video file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Enable repetition. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. The option is off by default. Preview the scene and check that the video repeats as intended.
- Fit the visual to the canvas. If the clip does not fill the scene, adjust its size and position in the preview. Check for unintended borders, cropping, or stretching before going live.
- Add the music source. Arrange and test the audio in OBS so that it plays alongside the visual. Confirm the audio is audible in the stream preview, not only through your local monitoring.
Use a playlist for multiple visual clips
If you want the background to change among several clips, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding one repeating Media Source for each clip. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS. Add the video files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Preview the transitions and check that every file plays as expected. OBS Media Sources documentation
| Setup | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source with Loop | One visual clip repeated continuously | Loop is enabled and the final-to-first transition is acceptable. |
| VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Several clips played in sequence | VLC is installed, the playlist contains the intended files, and Loop Playlist is enabled. |
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Enter the details in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or shared configuration files. YouTube explains the encoder connection in its live-stream encoder guide.
- Choose a suitable output configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For H.264, its current encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. It recommends CBR, a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four), AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that your equipment or connection can sustain the settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Test before scheduling a long run. Test with audio and moving visuals similar to the actual broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and adjust resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen output. Run an upload speed test, but rely on an actual encoder test as well.
- Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Follow the Live Control Room status and confirm the stream is receiving a stable signal before leaving it unattended.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its guidance says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance

Run OBS on your own computer
OBS is a straightforward way to combine the animation, music, and YouTube encoder output. The trade-off is that the computer, OBS, and internet connection need to remain available for the stream to continue. Plan for local interruptions and check the stream rather than assuming a long-running setup will stay online without attention.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The background stops instead of repeating: Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a multi-clip VLC Video source, check Loop Playlist.
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check again. OBS requires VLC for this source.
- The video plays but the music does not reach YouTube: Check the audio source and OBS audio meters, then verify the audio in YouTube’s stream preview. Local monitoring alone does not confirm that the encoder is sending it.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the connection drops: Test the actual stream, inspect upload stability, and reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a sustainable configuration. YouTube’s listed bitrates are recommendations rather than a connection guarantee.
- The stream is interrupted over copyrighted material: Confirm that the channel has the required rights and, for licensed third-party content, ask the rights holder to add it to the Content ID allowlist.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS broadcast depends on the computer and connection staying available. Consider whether a cloud workflow better fits your unattended run, and verify any provider’s current capabilities and terms.
