Recovery depends on three links working in order: the computer must power itself on when electricity returns, the operating system must launch OBS, and OBS must start streaming. You can configure the first two on your machine and use OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter for the third—but test the entire chain, including what your streaming platform does after a disconnect.
What must happen for automatic recovery
A power loss stops the stream because the computer and network equipment lose power. OBS cannot respond until the computer boots and OBS launches. Even after OBS starts streaming, the streaming platform may end the previous live session or require a new event; that behavior depends on the service and its settings and should not be assumed.
- Power returns: the computer’s firmware is configured to boot after AC power is restored.
- OBS launches: the operating system starts OBS without requiring someone to open it manually.
- Streaming starts: OBS launches with
--startstreamingand has the correct profile, scene, sources, and stream configuration available. - The platform accepts the reconnect: confirm in the platform’s live dashboard whether the stream resumes the intended event or needs a new one.
Each link can fail independently. Configuring OBS alone does not make the computer boot after an outage or ensure that the operating system passes a sign-in screen.
Set the computer to power on when electricity returns
Find the firmware power-loss setting
Restart the computer and enter its BIOS or UEFI setup. Look for an option describing what to do after AC power loss, power failure, or power restoration. Choose the setting that powers the computer on when electricity returns, then save the change.

For example, ASUS documents this path on the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO: Advanced → APM Configuration → Restore AC Power Loss. Its options include Power On, which boots when power returns; Power Off, which leaves the system off; and Last State, which restores the prior power state. Other manufacturers and models use different names and menus, so use the manual for your specific computer or motherboard. ASUS also notes that the behavior depends on the AC power state and may not trigger if power is restored immediately after the loss. ASUS firmware guidance
After changing the setting, save it and perform a controlled test when it is safe to do so. Do not rely on an assumed menu path or treat a test on one device as proof for another.
Make the operating system launch OBS
Windows 10 and 11: startup apps
Windows startup apps run when a user signs in. To add OBS, use either of these paths:
- Settings: Start → Settings → Apps → Startup. Turn on OBS if it appears in the list.
- Task Manager: open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and enable OBS.
These settings do not prove that the PC will pass a sign-in screen unattended. If the machine displays a password prompt, recovery screen, confirmation dialog, or other interruption after reboot, OBS may not launch until someone responds. Test the actual computer’s behavior. Microsoft’s guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11: Configure startup applications in Windows.
Windows: launch OBS with parameters
OBS’s Windows launch guide describes adding parameters to a shortcut’s target. Find the OBS shortcut, open Properties, and append the desired parameters after the executable path in Target. For a scheduled or otherwise automated launch, set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. The install location can differ, so use the path on your computer rather than copying the example blindly. OBS launch parameters

macOS and Linux
OBS documents launching with parameters on macOS through an Automator application or Terminal. The documented form is open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. This launches OBS with the parameter, but the cited OBS page does not provide a complete current macOS login-item setup; configure and test how OBS starts at login on your version of macOS.
Linux desktop auto-launch steps are not established here. Use the launch-parameter guidance for the OBS argument, then follow the instructions for your distribution and desktop environment to start the application automatically. Verify that the process runs in the right user session and can access the media and audio sources.
Tell OBS to start streaming on launch
Append --startstreaming to the OBS launch command or shortcut target. OBS describes this flag as automatically starting streaming when OBS launches. A Windows target can take this form:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming
Your OBS executable may be in a different folder. If you use a specific profile, scene collection, or scene, OBS also documents --profile "name", --collection "name", and --scene "name". Use the exact names configured in OBS and test that the intended setup loads before trusting an unattended restart. The --startrecording parameter starts recording, not streaming.

Keep your stream key private. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or log. Configure account or stream information in OBS and avoid exposing credentials while setting up automated launch.
Check the stream settings and test the full recovery chain
Confirm OBS is ready to stream
OBS recommends checking output settings and running a test for a few minutes. Its auto-configuration wizard considers hardware and network conditions, but compatible system requirements do not guarantee that a particular computer can stream reliably. The CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS Quick Start Guide · OBS system requirements
Before an outage test, verify that the intended profile, scene collection, and scene load; the ambient video and audio sources are available after reboot; and the network reconnects. Make sure the output reaches a live state rather than merely confirming that OBS opened.
Test under controlled conditions
- Run OBS normally and confirm the correct scene, media, audio, and stream configuration.
- Confirm that the firmware power-restoration setting and OS launch method are configured.
- When safe, simulate the relevant recovery path in a controlled test. Observe whether the computer boots, whether OBS launches, and whether OBS starts streaming without input.
- Check the streaming service’s live dashboard. Verify whether it resumes the expected event, waits for a reconnect, or requires a new event.
A successful manual launch proves only that OBS can run in that situation. It does not prove the firmware, sign-in path, network, sources, or platform session will recover after an outage. Do not promise uninterrupted video or the same live URL until you have verified the behavior on your own setup.

A UPS can keep a streaming computer and network equipment powered through a brief interruption. It is an optional way to bridge short outages, not a substitute for configuring the computer to power on after a longer loss or for making OBS relaunch. Runtime depends on the connected load and the UPS; calculate those requirements rather than assuming a particular number of minutes. CISA guidance on UPS use

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
- The computer stays off when power returns: check the firmware’s AC power-loss setting and confirm the selected option is the one that boots the system. Consult the device manual; labels vary.
- The computer boots, but OBS does not open: check that OBS is enabled in Windows Startup apps or that your automated launch is configured. Determine whether a sign-in, recovery, or confirmation screen is blocking startup.
- OBS opens but does not start streaming: confirm
--startstreamingis appended to the actual launch target or command, and confirm OBS loaded the intended profile and stream configuration. - OBS starts but the video or sound is missing: check that the media and audio sources are available after reboot and that the intended scene loads. Confirm network connectivity has returned.
- OBS appears live, but viewers cannot see the intended event: inspect the streaming service’s live dashboard. Platform-specific behavior after a full disconnect was not established here; the service may treat it as a new session or require another event.
- The stream stops under load: review the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity against the computer’s capabilities. OBS cautions that meeting compatible system requirements alone does not guarantee streaming capability.
Recording locally during a stream
If OBS is also recording, an unfinalized MP4 or MOV recording may be unrecoverable after a power loss. OBS’s current English localization file warns about this risk and suggests MKV when recording multiple audio tracks, followed by remuxing afterward. Because that localization file is on a mutable development branch, check the current OBS interface and guidance before relying on version-specific steps. OBS English localization file
