There is no single fix for YouTube’s “encoder settings are incompatible” warning: the right change depends on the full error message, your stream protocol, and the settings your encoder is sending. Read the warning in Live Control Room first, then check the protocol, formats, bitrate, keyframes, and any HLS or HDR requirements below. YouTube’s general encoder guidance is for RTMP/RTMPS; do not assume it applies unchanged to HLS.
1. Read the full warning and identify the protocol
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s status or stream-health messages and read the complete warning. Note any named problem—such as an incorrect stream format or bitrate—and whether the stream is using RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. The title’s wording does not identify one universal cause, so treat the message as a diagnostic clue rather than a one-click fix. YouTube’s live streaming error messages page describes specific errors and remedies.
For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS streaming, compare your encoder with YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. If you selected HLS, use the separate HLS requirements instead. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its general encoder guidance.
2. Check the video and audio formats
If the message identifies an “Incorrect stream format,” YouTube’s specific remedy is to use H.264 video and AAC audio. Its error guidance also identifies an unsupported container, audio codec, video codec, or video codec profile as possible format problems. Check the actual output profile and container in your encoder, not just the source file’s properties.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That specific error instruction is distinct from YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance, which lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. General support for a codec does not mean it is the right answer to every format warning; use the exact error and protocol to choose the correction.
3. Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
For RTMP/RTMPS, bitrate recommendations vary with the video codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. The following examples are YouTube’s recommended bitrates, not mandatory targets or guarantees that a particular connection can sustain them:

| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommendation | H.264 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s live table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected; it also covers other formats, including 4K and lower resolutions. Do not extrapolate from these examples. If the encoder sends a bitrate above what your available upload bandwidth can sustain, lower the resolution or otherwise reduce the stream’s bandwidth demand. YouTube’s error guidance also notes that when you are not using a variable-resolution entrypoint, the bitrate must match the exact rate selected on Live Control Room’s Ingestion Settings page.
4. Verify keyframes and encoding mode
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS recommendations call for constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Check the encoder’s output settings rather than relying on a preset name, since presets may expose these controls differently.

The same guidance lists these advanced settings: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, 8-bit SDR, and 10-bit HDR. These are recommendations for the relevant workflow, not a reason to change unrelated settings before identifying the error.
5. Treat HLS and HDR as separate workflows
If the stream uses HLS
HLS requires an HLS-selected stream key and the HTTPS ingestion URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube specifies MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Byte-range delivery and encryption other than HTTPS are not supported. Ultra-low latency is off for HLS, which has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Confirm the encoder’s HLS settings against YouTube’s HLS setup instructions rather than applying RTMP settings blindly.

If the stream uses HDR
HDR has additional requirements, including HEVC and 10-bit video with compatible color characteristics. YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance gives workflow-specific setup instructions. Its OBS instructions specify OBS version 30.1 or later; for the HDR/HLS workflow, YouTube says to select HLS and leave manual resolution off. Check the instructions for your encoder and protocol instead of assuming ordinary SDR settings are sufficient.

- Apply only the changes supported by the warning and the guidance for your protocol.
- Run a preflight stream using representative audio and movement, not a static screen or silent clip alone.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the encoder is sending data.
- If the incompatibility warning remains, compare the outgoing encoder settings with the stream’s selected ingestion settings again, including codec/profile, audio format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it. A clean local preview does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a compatible stream.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect stream format” or a format-related message | Container, video codec and profile, and audio codec. | For the specific incorrect-format error, use H.264 video and AAC audio as YouTube directs; confirm the stream protocol and encoder output format. |
| Bitrate warning or unstable stream health | Codec, ingestion resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and available upload bandwidth. | Use the recommendation for the exact video mode, match the Ingestion Settings rate when required, or lower resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected mode. |
| Warning after changing a keyframe or rate-control preset | Keyframe interval and whether the encoder is using CBR. | Set a two-second keyframe interval, do not exceed four seconds, and use CBR for the general RTMP/RTMPS workflow. |
| HLS stream rejected despite apparently valid video settings | HLS stream key and HTTPS URL, segment duration, playlist behavior, and HTTPS request method. | Check each HLS-specific requirement; RTMP settings alone do not diagnose HLS delivery. |
| HDR stream rejected or not handled as expected | Protocol, HEVC, 10-bit video, compatible color characteristics, and encoder-specific HDR setup. | Follow YouTube’s HDR instructions for the encoder and protocol in use. |
