Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 has no confirmed public release date as of October 2026. It screened at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, but its planned August 2024 U.S. theatrical release was postponed. The latest reported status says the remaining chapters’ timing is uncertain—not that the saga has been definitively canceled.
What is Horizon: An American Saga?
Horizon is a planned four-film Western saga about the Civil War years and the settlement and expansion of the American West. Warner Bros. describes its historical span as 1861–1865. The official Venice Biennale program frames the story around a New Mexico Territory river settlement and perspectives including settlers, soldiers, rail magnates, cattle traders, Indigenous Americans and Chinese migrant workers.
Kevin Costner directs, co-wrote the films with Jon Baird, produces through Territory Pictures and appears in the cast. New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures are presenters, with Warner Bros. Pictures as distributor. The four-film scope describes the creative plan, not a confirmed schedule or guarantee that every chapter will reach theaters.
When did Chapter 1 come out?
Chapter 1 screened at the Festival de Cannes on May 19, 2024, before opening in U.S. theaters on June 28, 2024. The Italian Warner Bros. page lists a July 4, 2024 release for that territory; that date is not the U.S. opening date.

What happened to Chapter 2’s release?
New Line Cinema said in July 2024 that Chapter 2 would not open on its planned August 16 U.S. date. The studio’s stated reason was to give audiences more time to discover Chapter 1, including through premium video-on-demand and Max. That explanation described the 2024 scheduling change; it did not announce a replacement date.
Chapter 2 was included in the 2024 Venice Film Festival’s official out-of-competition program. The Biennale listed its runtime as 190 minutes and credited Costner as director, with Jon Baird and Costner as screenwriters. A festival screening is not the same as a general theatrical or home-video release.

Is Chapter 2 canceled, and what about Chapters 3 and 4?
No definitive cancellation has been reported in the latest status account available here. A Tribune News Service Q&A published by the Daily Herald on July 16, 2026, said Chapter 2 had not been released beyond film festivals. It also reported that Chapter 3 was partly completed, Chapter 4 had not been made at that time, and future financing and timing were uncertain. Those are reported conditions as of that article’s publication, not a confirmed current production update.
The project’s ambition goes back decades. In a Cannes announcement, Costner said the story began 35 years earlier. His director’s statement in the Venice program said he and Jon Baird had developed it into a four-film saga over two decades.
