Hanks’s memoir, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road, looks back on a childhood she describes as marked by both love and fear. In interviews about the book, Hanks recalls care alongside emotional and physical abuse or neglect, and retraces a journey she took with her mother in 1996 to make sense of family memories and papers. These are Hanks’s recollections and interpretations, not independent findings about her mother.
What E.A. Hanks says about her childhood
Hanks describes her mother, Susan Dillingham, as a complicated presence in her life: someone she loved and remembers as capable of care, but also someone whose behavior left her feeling unsafe. Speaking to CBS News, Hanks said, “The truth is, my mother had good days and bad days.” She has also described emotional and physical abuse or neglect. Her account holds both realities together rather than depicting her mother only as a villain or only as a loving parent.
In an interview with The Guardian, Hanks compared the uncertainty of home to “a lifetime spent on very thin ice,” where each step could affect whether a day remained good or turned bad. In Vanity Fair, she explained why a one-sided portrait would be misleading: “I can be angry for the child I was, and I often am, but a portrayal of my mother that only shows the bad days would be as dishonest as one that only shows the good.”
What The 10 is about
The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road connects Hanks’s family history to two journeys along Interstate 10. The Washington Post identifies it as a memoir by E.A. Hanks; CBS News describes the later trip at its center as a six-month drive. The road gives Hanks a way to revisit the past, consider what she remembers, and investigate the history behind her family’s story.

Hanks also includes her mother’s poetry. She told CBS News, “I think including her poetry in the book is a way of treating her seriously as an artist and getting back into conversation with her.” The book’s attention to those writings is part of its effort to regard Dillingham as a person with her own creative life, not only through the painful experiences her daughter recalls.
How the two Interstate 10 trips differ
| Journey | When and with whom | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| California to Florida | In 1996, when Hanks was 14, she traveled with her mother in a Winnebago, according to The Guardian. | A trip they took together, later remembered as part of their shared history. |
| Return along Interstate 10 | In 2019, Hanks retraced the route alone in a Ford Transit; Vanity Fair describes the journey as lasting six months. | A retrospective inquiry connected to family papers Hanks had kept and her effort to understand her mother’s past. |
The first trip is part of Hanks’s childhood memory; the later one is an adult’s attempt to examine that memory alongside documentary traces. The Guardian and Vanity Fair report these journeys as part of the memoir’s frame.

Family background and Hanks’s account of leaving home
The Washington Post reports that Hanks was born in Los Angeles in 1982, that her parents divorced when she was five, and that she and her older brother, Colin, lived with their mother in Sacramento while their father, Tom Hanks, lived in Los Angeles. In interviews with CBS News and Vanity Fair, Hanks said her father and brother were among the first people to read the memoir. She recalled her father telling her: “This is an accurate portrayal of what it was to love and fear this woman.”
Hanks has also described her father as aware of the situation at home. The Guardian and Access Hollywood report her account that she moved to Los Angeles after an assault and an extended legal effort. This is her recollection of events and proceedings in California in the late 1980s; it should not be read as a general explanation of custody law or as an independently adjudicated account.

What the memoir does—and does not—claim about her mother
Hanks’s account is an effort to understand her mother and her own experience, not a definitive clinical diagnosis. The Guardian reports that Dillingham was not diagnosed. Hanks discusses behavior she perceived and the difficulty of finding language for addiction and mental health, while acknowledging uncertainty. As she told CBS News, “A lot of the book is me trying to create that language and share it.”
That distinction matters: a memoir can document what its author remembers, felt, and came to believe without establishing a medical explanation for another person’s behavior. Hanks’s emphasis on both good and bad days is central to the way she approaches that uncertainty.
