Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Make a sleep sounds stream recover by adding retries at the point that failed: keep the source encoder running and reconnect it to the streaming server, switch to a local backup audio source if the primary fails, and make the listener’s player reload after a stalled or failed media request. If the listener’s internet connection is completely down, live audio cannot reach them; only already-buffered audio or a local copy can keep playing.
First identify which connection failed
A typical internet-radio setup has three links: the source generator sends audio to a streaming server, the server delivers it to listeners, and each listener’s device connects to the internet. A retry on one link cannot repair a failure on another.
- Source to server: The encoder or audio process cannot reach the server, or the server closes its connection. Configure the source client to reconnect and make sure its process stays running.
- Server to listener: The server or delivery path is unavailable. Source-side retries may not help; check server health and delivery logs.
- Listener to network: The listener loses connectivity. The server cannot deliver fresh audio to that device until the connection returns.
Test each link separately. Record what the source logs, whether the server mount remains available, what the player reports, and whether sound resumes.
Configure the source to reconnect and keep audio available
Liquidsoap sending to Icecast
Liquidsoap’s development documentation for version 2.5.x says that when an Icecast connection fails or is closed, Liquidsoap logs the error and tries to reconnect after three seconds. It continues retrying while the script is running. That is documented behavior for this version, not a guarantee for every Liquidsoap release or client. Check the documentation for the version you deploy: Liquidsoap: Streaming to Icecast and Shoutcast.

The same documentation gives development-version defaults of five seconds for connection_timeout, which controls waiting for a connection to be established, and 30 seconds for timeout, which controls read/write waiting. These are different from the retry interval. Liquidsoap also provides connect, disconnect, and error callbacks for logging or changing retry behavior. An error callback can delay retries or stop them, so avoid stopping retries if unattended recovery is required.
Confirm the option names and defaults against your installed version before changing a production configuration. There is no universally established retry delay that suits every host or network.

Keep a local fallback source ready
A reconnect only restores the source-to-server link; it does not ensure that usable audio is available during a source failure. Liquidsoap’s quickstart describes mksafe, which can turn an unavailable source into silence, and fallback, which can switch to an always-available backup source. For a sleep sounds stream, use a locally accessible ambient loop or backup playlist if silence is undesirable. This protects against the primary audio source failing while the generator can still reach the server; it cannot make the server reachable to an offline listener. See the Liquidsoap Quickstart.
If you use Ices 2 instead
Ices 2 has its own reconnect settings: reconnectdelay, reconnectattempts, and retry-initial. They are specific to Ices 2, not Liquidsoap. Its documented attempt limit can stop an instance after the configured retries, so choose the limit deliberately if you need unattended recovery. The Ices 2.0.3 configuration reference is at Icecast: IceS v2.0 Documentation—Configuration.

Make a browser player retry after a failure
A browser media element exposes events that can help a custom player detect trouble. The stalled event means fetching has stopped, waiting means playback is waiting for data, and error signals a media resource or fetch error. Use these events to show a clear status and start a controlled recovery attempt rather than leaving the player apparently active but silent. See Apple Developer Documentation: HTMLMediaElement and MDN: HTMLMediaElement error event.
- Listen for stalled, waiting, and error states, and show the listener that reconnection is in progress.
- After connectivity appears to return, call
HTMLMediaElement.load()to reset the media element and start source selection and loading again. - Wait for the media to become ready, then request playback. Handle a rejected playback request and offer a play button if the browser requires a user gesture.
load() aborts ongoing operations and restarts source selection; it does not promise that playback will resume audibly in every browser. MDN documents its behavior at MDN: HTMLMediaElement load() method. If your player uses Media Source Extensions, your application also owns segment fetching and buffering, so it must handle failed chunk requests and re-establish its media pipeline. A particular library or implementation cannot be recommended without knowing your setup.

Know what can happen during a listener outage
When the listener has no internet connection, the live stream cannot deliver new audio. A player buffer can bridge only the amount of audio already buffered; once it runs out, playback stops. For playback through a longer outage, provide a local audio file or offline playlist on the listener’s device. A server-side fallback or source encoder retry cannot substitute for that local copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When segmented delivery may help
Liquidsoap can produce HLS files for a web server. HLS and DASH use rolling playlists of short segments, and adaptive variants can switch to a lower bitrate as bandwidth degrades. That may help when a listener’s connection is weak but still working; it cannot deliver fresh audio over a completely absent connection. The Liquidsoap book gives an illustrative example of a playlist containing the last minute split into two-second segments. Those figures are an example, not a universal setting or guarantee. See The Liquidsoap book: HLS and adaptive streaming.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely failure area | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Source logs a connection error and the server mount disappears | Source-to-server connection | Keep the encoder process running, check its reconnect behavior and logs, and verify that the server accepts the connection again. |
| Source is connected, but the primary audio source has stopped | Audio source availability | Configure a local backup loop or playlist with a fallback mechanism; otherwise the output may become silence or stop, depending on the setup. |
| Server is available, but the browser reports stalled, waiting, or error | Server delivery or listener connection | Check the listener’s connectivity and server delivery path. When connectivity returns, reload the media source and handle readiness and playback errors. |
| Playback resumes briefly, then stops during a long outage | Listener is offline and buffer has run out | Use a local audio copy for continued offline playback; no live delivery method can supply new audio without a connection. |
| Retries stop after several attempts | Retry policy is capped or callback stops retrying | Inspect the client’s attempt limit and error callback. For Ices 2, review reconnectattempts; for Liquidsoap, check configured callbacks and the deployed version’s behavior. |
| Browser reloads the media but remains silent | Media is not ready or playback needs user interaction | Wait for readiness, surface errors, and provide a user-initiated play control when autoplay restrictions apply. |
Validate the recovery before relying on it
- Disconnect the source from the streaming server and confirm the source process stays running and retries. Check whether a fallback audio source takes over.
- Restore the source connection and verify that the server mount and audio return.
- Test the listener path separately by disconnecting the listener device from the network. Observe the player’s events and whether it recovers after reconnecting.
- Leave the listener offline longer than the player’s existing buffer. Confirm that the expected behavior is to stop, or test that a local copy continues playing.
