You can run an ambient YouTube stream from a Mac mini by sending an OBS scene to YouTube Live—but “24/7” is an operating plan, not an uptime setting. Enable YouTube live streaming, connect OBS with a stream key, choose conservative encoder settings, test the complete broadcast, and prepare for outages. If you need a YouTube archive, account for YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Before you start: check the Mac mini and the stream plan
OBS lists macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU as baseline requirements. That compatibility does not guarantee that a particular Mac mini can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Start with the actual machine and a simple scene, then test under representative conditions. See the OBS system requirements.
Prepare the ambient visual and audio you have permission to use. Decide whether the scene is a still image, an animation, or a looping video, and check that its loop behaves as intended in OBS. This setup guide does not establish the rights status of any particular asset: make sure you have the necessary rights for both the live broadcast and any archive.
- Install a current OBS Studio release compatible with the Mac’s installed macOS.
- Use a simple scene first; add sources and effects only after confirming the basic stream is stable.
- Plan storage for a local recording if you want an independent archive.
- Run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than setting OBS to the connection’s theoretical maximum.
Enable YouTube Live and create an encoder stream
Enable live streaming on the channel ahead of the planned start. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this step until broadcast day. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create an encoder stream or select the appropriate existing stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key if you are not using OBS’s direct YouTube integration.
- In OBS, connect the YouTube account or enter the server URL and stream key in its streaming configuration.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a credential, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
You can use a reusable custom stream key for repeated setups. YouTube also provides auto-start and auto-stop controls; choose them based on what should happen when OBS starts or stops sending, then test that workflow. A reusable key or automatic start setting does not keep a scheduled watch page, event, or stream active forever—verify the current Live Control Room setup for each production workflow. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Set OBS encoding for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the output you intend to send. Its general recommendations include RTMP or encrypted RTMPS ingestion, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Consult the YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table before settling on output settings.

Choose a conservative resolution and bitrate
For a reference point, YouTube lists 4 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. That is a platform recommendation for that output, not a guarantee that every Mac mini, network, or scene will work well at that rate. Select the matching YouTube recommendation for your target resolution and frame rate, and ensure the connection can sustain it with margin. YouTube recommends running a speed test and testing before going live.
Keep the scene and audio within the machine’s capacity
Encoder load depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity. If OBS struggles, simplify animated layers, filters, or other sources, or reduce output demands before the public stream. Test the actual audio level and picture movement you plan to broadcast; a static test screen alone will not reveal every issue with the finished scene.

Test the broadcast before making it public
- Start a private or otherwise controlled test through the intended YouTube workflow.
- Check the preview in the Live Control Room, and verify that the watch page works on the channel and on a mobile device.
- Use representative sound and visual movement, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Enable local recording if you need a backup archive, and confirm that the recording file is growing and has enough available storage.
- Review the stream after a sustained test rather than treating the initial connection as proof of long-term reliability.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance and live streaming tips. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide discusses dropped frames when the encoder connection is impaired and identifies security software as one possible source of interference.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.

| Operating pattern | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| One continuous session longer than 12 hours | YouTube may not capture the archive, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Use this pattern only if the YouTube archive is not essential or you have another recording plan. |
| Planned sessions shorter than 12 hours | This aligns with YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition, but requires more restart and watch-page management. Keep a local recording as backup and test the handoff between sessions. |
Neither session pattern guarantees an archive: configure and check local recording if preserving the full program matters.

YouTube and OBS provide setup, monitoring, and reusable configuration options, but those do not establish that a Mac mini and OBS will recover from every crash, power failure, internet outage, credential problem, or platform interruption. Treat continuity as an operational responsibility: monitor the stream and have a tested restart and recovery procedure.

- A UPS can provide short-term power during an interruption; size it for your equipment load and required runtime.
- Wired Ethernet can avoid dependence on Wi-Fi coverage, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage.
- A backup internet path addresses a different risk from a UPS.
- Local recording can preserve a copy when YouTube’s archive is unavailable, provided the Mac and storage remain operational.
These are practical options for distinct failure modes, not a certified configuration or guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Channel live-stream eligibility or activation | Enable live streaming in advance. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours, then verify the Live Control Room setup. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | Server URL, key, or connection | Confirm the stream URL and key match the intended YouTube stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or OBS drops frames | Upload connection, bitrate, or possible software interference | Run an upload speed test, lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and check OBS’s connection troubleshooting advice, including security software interference. |
| Encoding is unstable or the Mac mini struggles | Encoder load, output demands, or scene complexity | Simplify the scene and retest. Reduce resolution or frame rate as needed, then choose the bitrate recommended for the new output. |
| The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete | Session exceeded 12 hours or local recording was not verified | Do not assume YouTube will capture a session longer than 12 hours. For future streams, use shorter planned sessions if appropriate and verify a local recording is being written. |
| The stream stops after a power or network interruption | Local equipment or connection failure | Use the recovery procedure you tested; consider a UPS or a backup internet path if it addresses the specific failure. Auto-start and a reusable key do not guarantee recovery. |
