FFmpeg can loop a prepared windstorm video and publish it to YouTube Live, but the loop is only one part of a 24/7 stream. You also need an always-on computer, stable upload bandwidth, a protected YouTube stream key, process monitoring and a plan for failures. The setup below uses H.264 video, AAC audio and YouTube’s RTMPS ingest; confirm current platform settings and your installed FFmpeg build before going live.
What a 24/7 FFmpeg stream needs
FFmpeg reads media inputs, can filter or transcode them, and sends the resulting output to a destination. It does not keep a computer awake, restore a failed network connection, supervise itself after a crash or guarantee that YouTube will keep a session running. A media loop repeats content; a resilient continuous service also needs an always-on host and operational monitoring.
- A compatible source: a prepared video file, plus an audio track if the visual is silent. A windstorm ambience stream commonly needs suitable sound as well as imagery.
- A supported output: select codecs and settings supported by both the FFmpeg build installed on your machine and YouTube’s current ingest guidance.
- An ingest destination and key: obtain the RTMPS URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
- Continuous operation: keep the host awake and the network connected, supervise the FFmpeg process, inspect logs and stream health, and prepare a restart or alert process.
FFmpeg’s command reference describes the tool’s input, filtering, encoding and output model: FFmpeg documentation. Its RTMP protocol documentation covers the protocol options relevant to publishing: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Prepare the windstorm video and audio
Check the source before encoding
Confirm the file plays from beginning to end, has the intended duration and contains the right video and audio streams. Decide whether the picture should be scaled or otherwise filtered, and whether the source audio should be used, replaced or omitted. For a still-image visual or a file without sound, add an appropriate ambience track deliberately rather than assuming audio will appear automatically.

Check that you have the right to use every visual and audio element. YouTube’s policies and copyright rules apply to live broadcasts too; looping a file does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Also consider whether the stream adds enough original value for your channel’s broader monetization and reused-content obligations. Review YouTube’s current rules before launch rather than relying on the fact that a video is ambient or pre-recorded.
Choose whether to repeat one file or make a playlist
A one-file loop is simplest when the same recording should repeat. A playlist can vary the ambience and reduce the sense of an obvious reset, but requires its own ordering, duration and transition checks. Confirm how your chosen loop method handles end-of-file timestamps and audio; looping that introduces a gap or timestamp discontinuity can create an audible break or a stalled output.
Configure YouTube Live before starting FFmpeg
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Copy the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the key private. Do not paste a real key into a public command example, source repository, screenshot or support post. Store it in a restricted configuration file, environment variable or other private secret storage; limit file permissions on a shared host.
- Set the stream visibility and details as needed, then use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators to test the feed before making it public.
- Check current encoder requirements. YouTube’s recommendations can change. Its current encoder settings guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These figures are YouTube recommendations checked 2026-10-03; consult the live page for other codecs, frame rates and current values: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Use encrypted ingest. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and Manage live stream settings.
For a static or slow-moving storm scene, 60 fps may not be necessary; select a resolution and frame rate that suit the material and your upload capacity. Do not assume that low motion makes YouTube’s bitrate guidance irrelevant: test the actual picture and connection at the settings you plan to use.

How do I stream a video 24/7? Build and validate the FFmpeg command
There is no safe universal command to copy unchanged: input paths, looping syntax, stream mapping, timestamps, shell escaping, FFmpeg build features and YouTube endpoint details vary. Use a template only after checking your own installation with ffmpeg -version and its local help. Replace every placeholder, including the ingest URL and key, with values from your environment; do not publish a command containing a real key.
ffmpeg [input and loop options for your source]
[optional video filters, such as scaling]
[output muxer and RTMPS options]
"[YouTube RTMPS ingest URL]/[private stream key]"
This is a command structure, not a tested, drop-in invocation. Confirm that the options you choose exist in your installed build and that the destination accepts the resulting codecs, container and transport. FFmpeg documents its options at FFmpeg Documentation.
Looping and output settings that matter
- Input and loop handling: configure repeat behavior for your particular source and FFmpeg version. Check local help for the relevant input or filter options; do not assume a loop flag behaves identically across files and builds.
- Stream mapping: explicitly select the intended video and audio streams when the file contains multiple tracks or when audio comes from a separate source. If there is no audio input, decide whether to add one or send video only, subject to the destination’s current requirements.
- Video encoding: for a straightforward YouTube baseline, use H.264 with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Set bitrate, resolution and frame rate for the source and connection; the cited YouTube recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30.
- Audio encoding: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Confirm the selected audio stream is present and audible, with an appropriate level and no unwanted clipping or silence.
- Output destination: publish to the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube, using the current stream key. YouTube’s transport guidance is at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation also describes an experimental HTTP listening mode. That is not the normal way to publish to YouTube, nor a ready-made public multi-viewer server: the documentation cautions that HTTP output listening requires special care, and a multi-client server mode is not implemented as a command-line option. Use the platform ingest workflow here; operating your own media server or CDN is a separate infrastructure project. See FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Set enough upload bandwidth and test the real stream
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% extra room. This is YouTube’s current guidance checked 2026-10-03. For example, a 5 Mbps video stream needs more than 5 Mbps of stable upload capacity because the connection needs headroom for the stream and network variation; audio and other traffic also consume capacity. Guidance: YouTube Streaming tips.
- Run FFmpeg at the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate over the same host and network you plan to use for the continuous stream.
- Test with both moving picture and representative audio. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast; see encoder settings guidance.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, local FFmpeg logs and the process status. Listen for gaps or level problems and watch for dropped frames, connection errors or a repeated opening frame.
- Make a small change at a time if there is a problem: lower resolution or bitrate, confirm the key and endpoint, then test again. Do not launch publicly until the output remains stable through a representative loop boundary.
Keep FFmpeg running continuously
Keep the host and network available
A local FFmpeg stream requires a machine that stays powered and awake, along with a dependable internet connection. Disable sleep for the operating system and prevent routine updates or scheduled shutdowns from interrupting the process where your system allows it. Consider power and cooling needs for a computer that runs continuously.

Run FFmpeg under a service manager or watchdog appropriate to your operating system, configured to restart it after an unexpected exit. Keep logs and check both process status and YouTube stream health. A restart policy can recover from some encoder failures, but it cannot repair a broken upload connection, an expired or incorrect stream key, an unavailable input file, or a platform-side interruption. Arrange alerts or periodic checks if unattended operation matters.

YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream; neither a loop nor FFmpeg guarantees uninterrupted uptime. The practical goal is to detect problems quickly and recover where possible, not to assume that a 24/7 command will run forever without oversight.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited encoder guidance does not establish automatic archiving for one continuous 24-hour broadcast, so do not promise that the entire day-long stream will appear as a single replay. If replay access matters, investigate shorter scheduled sessions or a separate local recording workflow, and verify current platform behavior before relying on either. Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Wrong ingest URL or key; unsupported output; connection or RTMPS issue | Copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, verify key privacy and output settings, then review FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health. |
| Stream starts but repeatedly drops | Insufficient or unstable upload bandwidth, host sleep, process crash or network interruption | Check available upload headroom against the total bitrate, keep the host awake, inspect logs and process status, and use a service manager or watchdog for process restart. |
| Video or audio is missing | Incorrect stream mapping, absent source track, unsupported encoder option or unintended output settings | Inspect the input’s streams, explicitly map the intended tracks, confirm the installed FFmpeg build and test in the Live Control Room preview. |
| A pause, jump or repeated first frame occurs at the loop point | Loop handling or timestamps do not suit the source; input duration or audio boundaries may differ | Test multiple complete cycles, validate timestamps and loop behavior for the particular file and build, and adjust the input or filter workflow. |
| Picture looks poor or the connection struggles | Bitrate, resolution or frame rate is too demanding for the source or upload connection | Choose a lower output setting, retain the recommended keyframe interval and CBR behavior, and retest at the real intended conditions. |
| The broadcast is live but no full 24-hour replay appears | A single stream exceeded the duration covered by YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance | Do not assume a 24-hour session will be archived as one replay; plan shorter sessions or a separate recording workflow if replay is essential. |
When dedicated hardware or hosted compute makes sense
FFmpeg is software, so standalone encoder hardware is optional. Dedicated hardware may suit a production that needs a separate appliance, but an ambience stream does not inherently require buying one. YouTube describes encoders as software applications or standalone hardware and recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production-value events; it does not establish that a particular model is necessary here. Hosted compute is another possible way to avoid keeping a home computer on, but it brings its own setup, bandwidth, storage and ongoing-cost questions.
