You can loop a rain video in OBS and send it to YouTube Live, but one OBS session or one YouTube event should not be treated as a dependable, endless broadcast. First confirm your channel is eligible and your rain footage and audio are cleared for live use. Then test the loop, encoder connection, and upload stability; if preserving a replay matters, plan shorter sessions because YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.

Before you start: eligibility, media, and rights

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming help also says streamers must be at least 16. Check your current status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before building a schedule, since eligibility and platform rules can change. YouTube live-streaming tips · Get started with live streaming

Use footage and sound you are allowed to stream

Use rain footage and audio you recorded yourself, properly licensed, or otherwise have documented rights to use for the intended live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content worldwide and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. Attribution by itself does not grant permission. The cited materials do not establish India-specific licensing requirements for this particular use, so check the terms that apply to your material and circumstances. YouTube livestream terms

Prepare a local file

Save the rain video as a local file that OBS can read. If you have a sequence of clips, you can instead use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Keep a separate copy of your original media; OBS looping does not create a replay backup.

How to loop a rain video in OBS

  1. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts for streaming. The wizard’s result is a starting point, not proof that your computer and connection can sustain the chosen settings. OBS recommends testing with your actual setup. OBS Quick Start
  2. Create a scene. In the Scenes panel, select +, name the scene (for example, “Monsoon Rain”), and confirm.
  3. Add the video. In Sources, select + > Media Source, name it, and choose your local file. Enable Loop in the source properties. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so do not assume it is already active. Select OK. OBS Media Sources
  4. Fit the image to your canvas. Right-click the source in the preview and use Transform > Fit to Screen. If you want to crop rather than stretch a differently shaped video, adjust the source deliberately and check the edges in the preview.
  5. Check the audio path. Play the source and watch the OBS audio mixer for activity. Listen through headphones or speakers for abrupt cuts, silence, clipping, or unwanted sound. A video can appear to loop while its audio is missing or routed incorrectly.
  6. Verify the loop at the end of the file. Let the media reach its end and confirm the picture restarts and the rain sound continues as intended. For a playlist, confirm the last item rolls back to the first. Test before going public; the documented loop control is not a substitute for checking the actual transition.

OBS’s Media Source supports common local video and audio formats. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; the files and playlist must remain accessible to OBS. OBS Media Sources

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the connection. Follow the current prompts shown for your channel. YouTube encoder setup
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service or the custom-server option indicated by YouTube’s current instructions, then enter the supplied server/stream URL and stream key. Labels can vary with the selected service and OBS version; use the matching fields shown by the current interface.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Do not publish it, show it in a screenshot, or include it in a public recording. If it is exposed, reset or rotate it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Choose YouTube stream settings intentionally. In the Live Control Room, review privacy, latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop controls. For non-interactive rain ambience, lower latency is usually not essential and can increase buffering; prioritize stable playback unless you have a specific reason to reduce delay. YouTube live settings
  5. Start a test and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check that the Live Control Room receives video and audio before making the event public. Confirm the right scene, image framing, sound level, and stream status. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time and checking the preview. YouTube live-streaming tips

Choose settings your computer and connection can sustain

There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every PC, encoder, rain file, and upload connection. OBS advises using its Auto-Configuration Wizard and testing: resolution and frame rate affect output and system load, and 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. Start with a conservative configuration that runs steadily, then assess the preview and OBS statistics before increasing quality. OBS overview

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Upload bitrate: OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific maximum. Use stable upload capacity rather than a best-case speed-test result, and lower the video bitrate if OBS reports dropped frames. OBS connection troubleshooting
  • Resolution and frame rate: Pick a setting your system can encode continuously. For a mostly still ambience scene, a higher frame rate may add little perceptible value while increasing the work required; test the result instead of assuming the source’s frame rate must be the stream’s frame rate.
  • Keyframes and other encoder fields: Use the values presented in YouTube’s current encoder instructions and the corresponding OBS output settings. The referenced guidance does not establish one universal set of numerical encoder values for every setup, so do not copy an arbitrary preset without checking it against the current YouTube and OBS controls.
  • Latency: Standard or otherwise less aggressive latency settings favor a more forgiving viewing experience for a non-interactive stream. Lower latency can increase buffering and is not needed merely to make rain play continuously.

Plan for 24/7 operation and YouTube replays

A 24-hour event is not a reliable archive strategy

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour live event therefore is not a dependable way to preserve a complete replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If a replay matters, schedule shorter sessions and record locally, checking that the recording file is growing while the broadcast runs. YouTube archive guidance

Consider the DVR trade-off

YouTube DVR can let viewers pause and rewind a live stream, but DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous ambience event may be convenient for viewers arriving at any time; shorter events can make replay and rewind expectations easier to manage. Choose based on whether uninterrupted availability or a more usable archive matters more to your audience. YouTube DVR guidance

Record locally if you need an independent copy

Enable OBS recording and select a destination with adequate free space before going live. Start a short recording test, play it back, and verify both video and audio. During a longer broadcast, check that the file continues to grow and that the destination drive is not filling up. A local recording protects against a missing YouTube archive only if it is actually being written and remains accessible.

Troubleshoot common stream failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Dropped frames or unstable stream indicator Upload connection instability or bitrate beyond sustained capacity Use Ethernet where practical, lower OBS’s video bitrate, and observe whether dropped frames stop. OBS recommends wired networking; it also suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a guarantee.
OBS connects, but YouTube preview is blank or wrong Wrong scene/source, media not loaded, or stream URL/key mismatch Check the active scene and source visibility, confirm the media file still exists, and compare OBS’s stream settings with the current values in YouTube Studio. Reset an exposed key.
Video plays but rain audio is silent Media audio is not reaching the mixer or has an incorrect level/routing Watch the mixer while the source plays, check mute and volume, and make a short local recording to verify the actual output.
Rain stops at the end of the clip Loop is off, or the playlist loop is not enabled Open Media Source properties and enable Loop, or enable Loop Playlist for VLC Video. Test through a complete cycle.
Connection remains unstable after lowering bitrate Wi-Fi, VPN or security software, network-optimization software, router/modem, cable or network-card problems, or ISP congestion Test on a wired connection, check relevant software and network hardware, restart or inspect the router/modem, and contact your ISP if the connection remains unreliable. OBS notes that many connection problems are outside its control.
Replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind as expected The event exceeded 12 hours or DVR is limited for a long stream Use shorter sessions when replay or DVR access matters, and keep a verified local recording rather than relying on one all-day event.

A wired connection can reduce one source of local network instability, but it does not prevent ISP congestion, power loss, or every other failure. No single home device or OBS setting guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 availability. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance discusses network and software checks in more detail. OBS connection troubleshooting

No. Test the actual end-to-start transition with your chosen file or playlist; loop playback can still reveal a visible or audible break in the source material.
