How to Run FFmpeg on a Windows PC as a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Streamer

A practical guide to configuring YouTube Live and testing the separate pieces required to keep an FFmpeg playlist streaming from a Windows PC.

FFmpeg can send video to YouTube Live from a Windows PC, but keeping a playlist on air around the clock takes more than an encoder command: playback must loop, the process must stay running, the computer must remain awake, and the publishing session must recover after failures. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room; this guide explains the setup and the checks to make before relying on it.

No verified, version-specific Windows command for cycling a multi-file playlist is established here. Rather than present an untested command as a dependable 24/7 recipe, this guide shows how to configure YouTube, choose and validate a playlist method for your FFmpeg build, and test each failure point independently.

What must work for a 24/7 stream

A continuous broadcast depends on several separate parts. A looping playlist does not automatically reconnect a dropped YouTube session, and a reconnecting network protocol does not make FFmpeg restart a playlist or relaunch after a process crash.

  • Playback: the playlist reaches its end and starts again, with the transitions and audio/video behavior you expect.
  • Media access: every source file remains readable and uses streams the chosen FFmpeg build can handle.
  • Publishing: FFmpeg sends the output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint using the correct stream key.
  • Recovery: the process or publishing session can be restarted after a failure; this requires separate validation.
  • Host availability: the Windows PC stays awake, powered, and connected to the network.

FFmpeg documents its command-line tools, protocols, encoders, filters, and demuxers, but the documentation cited here does not establish a complete, version-specific Windows recipe for repeatedly cycling a multi-file playlist. Check the behavior against the exact FFmpeg build and playlist method you intend to use. FFmpeg documentation

Get the YouTube Live ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you will use.
  2. Copy the stream URL. In FFmpeg’s output configuration, this is the server or ingest destination.
  3. Copy the stream key. Supply it in the encoder’s key field or as required by your selected FFmpeg output method. Follow the current YouTube and FFmpeg instructions for how the URL and key are combined or entered.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as being like a stream’s password and address. If someone obtains it, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Use YouTube’s current ingest guidance rather than copying settings from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guide lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Choose and validate the FFmpeg playlist method

Check the exact build before writing a command

First identify the FFmpeg build and version installed on the PC, then consult the documentation for that build and confirm that the playlist method you select works on Windows. The title does not establish a Windows version, media format, playlist type, or whether the stream is audio-only or audio-video, so a single command cannot safely be assumed to fit every setup.

Test Windows file paths, quoting, and option placement with the real files. Confirm that each item plays in order, the playlist reaches its end and repeats, and the output remains compatible across files. A method that works for one file does not by itself prove that a multi-file playlist cycles; neither does successful playback prove that transitions are gapless.

Test likely playlist failure cases

  • Temporarily test with a missing or unreadable file and note whether playback stops, skips it, or reports an error.
  • Check files with different codecs, stream layouts, resolutions, frame rates, or audio formats. Do not assume FFmpeg will produce the intended continuous output across mismatched sources without testing.
  • Listen and watch at file boundaries to check for silence, abrupt cuts, or gaps. Gapless playback is not established by the available documentation and must be verified for the selected method and media.
  • Run the playlist long enough to observe at least one complete cycle. A short test that never reaches the end cannot verify looping.

Keep a known-good copy of your playlist and media paths. A change to a file location or filename can break an otherwise working playlist.

Set bitrate and video quality for the connection

Choose a configuration supported by the source files, FFmpeg build, and available upload connection, then test it in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate examples are 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection can sustain the stream. The guide gives ranges by resolution and frame rate; use its current table for your target format rather than treating the examples as universal values. YouTube encoder settings

  • Use CBR as recommended by YouTube.
  • Set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds where supported; do not exceed YouTube’s recommended maximum of 4 seconds.
  • Use an audio format YouTube lists, such as AAC or MP3.
  • Test movement and audio representative of the actual playlist. Monitor stream health while the test is running.

YouTube’s guidance is not a substitute for checking the actual output and network. If stream health degrades, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again before relying on the setup.

Keep Windows and FFmpeg running

A 24/7 setup needs host-level operations as well as media settings. Prevent the PC from sleeping, ensure its power and network connection remain available, and decide how FFmpeg will be monitored and relaunched after interruption. The specific Windows power and Task Scheduler steps are not established by the sources cited here, so confirm the correct settings for your Windows edition rather than relying on a generic click path.

Do not treat FFmpeg protocol reconnection options as a complete recovery plan. FFmpeg documents HTTP input options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and retry-delay limits. Those describe protocol behavior; they do not guarantee that a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output session will recover, make a playlist loop, or relaunch a crashed process. Confirm option support and behavior in your build, and test output-session recovery separately. FFmpeg protocol documentation

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Run a representative test broadcast. Include the kinds of video movement and audio present in the real playlist.
  2. Check YouTube stream health. Watch Live Control Room while FFmpeg is publishing and resolve any warnings before extending the run.
  3. Observe a full playlist cycle. Confirm that playback restarts as intended and check the transition at the loop point.
  4. Test source-file problems. Check behavior with a missing file and with any media format variations in the playlist.
  5. Test interruptions deliberately. Separately verify what happens when FFmpeg stops, the network drops, and the computer restarts. Confirm whether the process, playlist, and YouTube publishing session each recover as intended.
  6. Monitor a longer run. Check logs or the running process and revisit stream health; a successful short test does not prove unattended 24/7 operation.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube encoder guidance

Copyright, reused content, and stream archives

Use media you have the right to stream

Only include footage, music, and other material you are permitted to broadcast. A file playing successfully in FFmpeg does not establish that you have the rights to use it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running stream.

Do not assume a complete 24-hour archive

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee a complete single archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If archived segments matter, check YouTube’s current live archive guidance and plan whether the broadcast should end and restart in segments; the best restart schedule for a 24/7 channel is not established here. Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
YouTube does not receive the stream Ingest URL, stream key, output configuration, or connection Re-copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, check that the key is current, and inspect FFmpeg output for connection errors.
Playlist stops at the end Looping method or playlist behavior Verify the selected method against the installed FFmpeg build and run a test through the end of the playlist.
Playback stops on one item Missing, unreadable, or incompatible source file Check the path and permissions, test the file independently, and validate the playlist’s behavior when a file cannot be read.
Stream drops after a network interruption Publishing-session recovery Test whether the output session reconnects in your setup; do not infer YouTube output recovery from HTTP input reconnection options.
Stream stops after FFmpeg exits Process monitoring and relaunch Arrange and test a process restart strategy appropriate to your Windows setup, then verify that the new process can publish with the current key.
PC stops streaming while unattended Sleep, power, or network availability Review Windows power settings and the physical power and network setup; confirm the PC remains awake during a long test.
Video or audio quality degrades Output settings or upload capacity Check YouTube stream health and the encoder settings; test a lower bitrate or output demand that the connection can sustain.
