Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy is a 2024 Netflix documentary about how brands encourage people to keep consuming and what that consumption can mean for people and the planet. It presents its case through insiders and whistleblowers; its specific company and waste-related claims should be understood as claims made in the film or by its interviewees, not as independently verified findings.
What is Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy about?
Netflix describes the film as an examination of “the tricks brands use to keep their customers consuming — and the real impact they have on our lives and the world.” Netflix Media Center says it draws on insiders and whistleblowers describing tactics intended to keep consumers buying. The documentary’s central question is how marketing and product strategies can shape buying habits, and what follows when those habits produce more goods and waste.
That is the film’s stated premise, not a guarantee that every allegation it presents has been independently established. When the film discusses a particular company, product, or impact, treat the point as the documentary’s argument or attribute it to the named person speaking.
When was it released, and how long is it?
Netflix Media Center lists the release as November 20, 2024, at 8:00 AM GMT. Netflix Tudum lists a runtime of 1 hour 25 minutes and a TV-14 rating. Availability and catalog details can vary by region and change, so check the official Netflix title page for local viewing information.

What does the documentary say about the scale of production and waste?
A November 2024 TIME interview with director Nic Stacey and producer Flora Bagenal reports figures used in the film. These are attributed estimates, not figures independently verified by that interview; keep the source and attribution attached when citing them.
- Shoes: TIME reports that director Nic Stacey cited 2.5 million shoes produced every hour in a sequence in the film.
- Clothing sent to Ghana: TIME associates the figure of more than 15 million unwanted clothes sent there each week with The Or Foundation.
- Discarded phones: TIME reports former Apple employee Nirav Patel’s estimate of approximately 13 million phones discarded daily.
The figures illustrate the scale the filmmakers want viewers to consider, but the interview does not provide the underlying methods needed to independently check each estimate. Stacey also told TIME that the film was pitched for people who may not have thought about consumerism’s environmental consequences before, with the aim of helping viewers see ways to regain agency.

Is the film a comprehensive account of waste impacts?
No. In the TIME interview, the filmmakers discuss using advertising’s visual language to make a difficult subject accessible, and Stacey points to policy change and longer product lifespans as part of the response. Those are the filmmakers’ perspectives. The interview also notes that the documentary does not cover every dimension of waste-related harm, including exposure affecting people who live near dump sites. View it as an argument and a starting point for considering consumption, rather than a complete survey of every consequence or possible solution.
What can viewers do about overconsumption?
A useful response is to pause before replacing or buying something and consider the item’s real condition, likely use, and next destination. The right choice depends on the particular item; buying something new to address a concern about consumption may simply add another purchase.

Keep using or repair it
If an item still works safely and meets your needs, continuing to use it avoids an unnecessary replacement. For a damaged product, weigh its condition, safety, repairability, parts availability, cost, and how much useful life a repair is likely to add. iFixit’s documentary page says, “Repair is better than recycling,” and encourages buying products designed with repair in mind. That is iFixit’s position, not a universal life-cycle assessment: a repair may not be safe, feasible, or worthwhile in every case.
If you have a specific electronics repair in mind, an electronics repair toolkit may be relevant only if it is compatible with the device and appropriate to your ability and the task. The film does not endorse a particular toolkit; do not buy tools without first identifying the repair and checking safety requirements.

Pass it on or resell it
Consider whether another person can realistically use the item. Describe its condition honestly, and choose a recipient or resale route that can handle it. Passing something on is not automatically a useful outcome if the item is broken, unwanted, or unsuitable for the next person.
Recycle or dispose of it responsibly
Check local official guidance for the exact item or material and confirm that a local program accepts and can process it. A recycling symbol alone does not establish that a particular item is recyclable in your area.
