The image will appear when the preceding videos finish, then the stream will end when the fallback file ends. A still image input does not make a finite playlist continue forever.
Choose the right ending for your stream
There are two practical ways to show an image after the final clip:

For most finite playlists, the prepared fallback file is simpler. If the image must stay on screen indefinitely, use a supervised transition or another explicitly continuing source; a finite file cannot guarantee an infinite tail.
Prepare compatible playlist files
Check the stream layout before making the fallback
The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads files sequentially as though their packets had been muxed together. For reliable concatenation, files need matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Check the clips for differences in video dimensions, frame rate, codec, audio presence, and audio codec. If their layouts do not match, normalize or re-encode the clips and fallback to a common format first. See the FFmpeg formats documentation for concat-demuxer behavior and requirements.

Decide whether the fallback needs audio
If the playlist output keeps an audio stream present, give the fallback a compatible audio stream too. For a silent ending, that can be a silent audio track. If the playlist has no audio stream, match that layout instead. The important point is that the fallback must not unexpectedly change the streams being concatenated.
Render the still image as a fallback video
The following is an adaptable example, not a command tested against your media. It creates a one-hour, 1920Ă—1080, 30 fps H.264 video with silent AAC audio from ending.jpg. Change the duration, dimensions, frame rate, codecs, and audio layout to match your playlist and intended tail.

-shortest fallback.mp4-loop 1repeats the image as the input while FFmpeg renders the output; it does not make the final concat playlist infinite.-t 3600sets the example output duration to 3,600 seconds. Choose a duration long enough for the session you intend to cover.- The scale-and-pad filter fits the image inside the chosen frame without stretching it, then fills any unused area. Adjust the target dimensions to match the playlist.
- The example includes stereo silence because the intended output layout includes audio. If your clips use a different audio layout or codec, make the fallback compatible rather than copying these settings blindly.
Local FFmpeg builds can differ in version and compiled components, and the documentation changes over time. Check the options available in the installed build and test the resulting file before relying on it.
Append the fallback to the concat list
Create a text file such as playlist.txt in the format shown below. Put the fallback last. File paths with special characters or quotes may need appropriate escaping; keep the list syntax valid for your paths.

file 'fallback.mp4'The concat demuxer can also use a duration directive to override a file’s stored duration, but that does not turn a finite image into an unlimited tail. Refer to the FFmpeg formats documentation for the format and timestamp behavior.
Send the playlist to YouTube Live
- Configure the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Check the encoder settings. YouTube’s published live encoder settings list RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR encoding. The guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the page again before going live because platform recommendations can change.
- Start FFmpeg at real-time speed. For compatible files, a basic pattern is:

-f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the example destination with the ingest URL and key supplied for your YouTube broadcast. Avoid sharing the complete command if it contains the key, because it may be saved in shell history or visible in process listings. Protect the key and use a safer secret-handling method appropriate to your operating system and deployment.

This stream-copy form is suitable only when the concatenated files already have compatible streams and meet the ingest requirements. If you had to normalize or re-encode the clips, or if they do not meet YouTube’s guidance, configure encoding accordingly rather than assuming -c copy will fix them. FFmpeg option details and exact commands depend on your files and local build; the YouTube encoder page is the source for its current delivery guidance.
- Test the transition. Run a short private or unlisted broadcast using representative audio and motion. Watch YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the final clip transitions to the image, the image lasts as intended, and the stream ends—or continues—according to your plan.
Keep the stream running beyond a finite fallback
A prepared fallback is finite by design. If you need an indefinite still-image tail, supervise the playlist and start or switch to a continuing image source when it finishes. That adds orchestration: the process must detect completion, preserve or re-establish a compatible output, and keep the YouTube connection healthy. A restart or source transition can interrupt the viewer’s stream, so verify the exact behavior in the deployment environment rather than assuming it will be seamless.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The concat input reports mismatched streams or fails at a clip boundary: Compare codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and audio streams across all files. Normalize or re-encode the playlist and fallback to a common layout.
- The image never appears: Check that the fallback file is named correctly in the list, is placed after the final clip, and is playable. Confirm the preceding clip finishes normally and inspect FFmpeg’s output for errors.
- The image appears, then the stream ends too soon: The fallback duration is the limit. Render a longer file or implement a supervised continuing source transition.
- The image is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by unexpected bars: Adjust the scale-and-pad filter and target dimensions. Preserve the image’s aspect ratio unless cropping is intentional.
- YouTube reports stream health or ingest problems: Check the encoder guidance, verify the broadcast’s ingest URL and stream key, and test with similar audio and motion. Check that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
- Audio disappears or the transition fails: Check whether the preceding files carry audio and whether the fallback has a compatible audio stream. Add silence only if that matches the intended output layout.
