To stream a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live, put compatible files in an FFmpeg concat list, encode the combined input as H.264 video and AAC audio, and send it to YouTube using the ingest URL and stream key shown in your live setup. This guide assumes “playlist” means files stored on your computer or server—not a YouTube watch-page playlist URL. The example below is an illustrative RTMP starting point, not a tested command or universal YouTube preset.
What this workflow does—and what it does not do
FFmpeg reads media inputs you provide with -i. For local files, its concat methods can join a sequence and feed it to a live output. A YouTube playlist page is a different kind of input; this workflow does not make FFmpeg directly play a watch-page playlist. See the FFmpeg FAQ and FFmpeg command-line documentation.
The concat demuxer joins compatible file streams without first re-encoding them. Since this example explicitly encodes video and audio, it can also serve as a starting pattern when compatible inputs need a common output format, but it does not automatically correct every mismatch in the input files. If their streams or timing differ, inspect and normalize them or use the concat filter with re-encoding.
Prepare the files and check compatibility
- Install FFmpeg with the encoders you intend to use. Check that your build includes
libx264and the native AAC encoder. Encoder availability can vary by build. Useffmpeg -encodersto inspect the installed build. - Inspect each clip. Run
ffprobeon every file and note its video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, and stream count. For example:ffprobe -hide_banner -i /media/clip-01.mp4. - Compare stream layouts and timing. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams and time bases. Clips with different layouts, codecs, or timing may not join cleanly; normalize them first or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes. FFmpeg describes the filter approach in its concat FAQ.
- Check audio availability. The example maps the first video stream and an optional first audio stream. If some playlist items have no audio, inconsistent stream layouts can still cause problems with file-level concatenation. Test the full sequence before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Create a concat list
Make a plain-text file named playlist.txt and list one local file per line:

file '/media/clip-01.mp4'
file '/media/clip-02.mp4'
file '/media/clip-03.mp4'
Use paths and quoting appropriate to your operating system. Keep the list limited to files you control and have permission to broadcast. The concat demuxer treats these as media files; it does not fetch a YouTube playlist page or repair incompatible streams.
Send an H.264/AAC stream over RTMP
For compatible local files, this is a representative command pattern:

Replace the example destination with the ingest URL and stream key supplied for your YouTube live setup.
The FFmpeg command structure and encoder behavior are documented in the FFmpeg manual and codec documentation. Confirm that your installed build supports the selected encoders and options. This pattern is not a verified, all-purpose YouTube preset: the available guidance here does not establish current general RTMP bitrate, resolution, or keyframe recommendations. Consult YouTube’s current general encoder settings before choosing those values; do not infer them from the HLS audio guidance below.
Keep RTMP and HLS requirements separate
RTMP and HLS are different ingest workflows. The command above uses RTMP with an FLV output. HLS requires segmenting and uploading a rolling stream; changing the RTMP URL alone does not turn this command into an HLS output.

| Consideration | RTMP pattern shown here | YouTube HLS requirements in the cited guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging | FLV output for RTMP | MPEG-TS segments plus a rolling playlist |
| Delivery mechanics | One RTMP output destination | HTTPS POST or PUT uploads, with no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist |
| Segment duration | Not applicable to this command pattern | One to four seconds |
| Documented video/audio formats | H.264 and AAC are selected in the example; confirm current YouTube RTMP settings separately | YouTube’s HLS guidance supports H.264 and AAC and also lists HEVC and additional audio codecs |
| Audio guidance | The command requests 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps AAC as an example, not as verified current RTMP guidance | YouTube’s HLS page recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo audio |
See YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol documentation and HLS encoder guidance for the segment and audio details. Do not carry HLS-specific packaging or settings over to RTMP without checking the applicable RTMP guidance.
Get the YouTube ingest details and test privately
- Open YouTube’s live setup and obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the broadcast. Exact Studio labels and account eligibility can change, so follow the current YouTube interface and help pages rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Replace the example destination in the command with the supplied ingest URL and key in the format required for that destination.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, logs, or shared repositories. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live setup.
- Start the FFmpeg process and check YouTube’s preview or stream health before making the broadcast public. Resolve ingest or media warnings before treating the output as ready.
- Run a short private test with the full playlist, including its transition from the final item back to the first. Watch for timestamp errors, missing audio, freezes, and unintended gaps.
The cited YouTube protocol documentation explains ingest mechanics, but does not settle current eligibility rules or every Studio interface step. Check YouTube’s current help information for your account and setup.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Concat errors or broken transitions: the files may have incompatible stream layouts, codecs, or time bases. Compare their
ffprobeoutput; normalize them to a consistent format or use the concat filter with re-encoding. - No audio in the output: check whether the input files actually contain audio and whether the first audio stream is the intended one. The optional mapping prevents a missing audio stream from failing that mapping, but it does not create audio or make inconsistent file layouts compatible.
- FFmpeg cannot find
libx264or AAC: the installed build may not include that encoder. Inspectffmpeg -encodersand install a suitable build before starting the broadcast. - The output runs too fast or falls behind: confirm
-reis applied to the file input and check whether the encoder can sustain real-time processing. Reduce processing demand or normalize media if the machine cannot keep up. - YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the ingest destination and stream key, the output protocol/container pairing, network access, and YouTube’s preview or health status. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- The stream works but does not meet expected quality: the command is only a starting pattern. Check YouTube’s current general RTMP encoder guidance and select output resolution, bitrate, and keyframe behavior accordingly; the HLS-specific numbers are not a substitute.
- A copyright or policy claim affects the broadcast: use only content you own or are authorized to stream, including music, footage, and other embedded material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. This FFmpeg workflow does not grant rights or determine whether a channel qualifies for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
